I used to take voice classes from a classically trained teacher. Once, I sheepishly mentioned to her how much I loved Lou Reed's singing, thinking she'd roll her eyes at my praise of the master of monotone. She actually agreed, adding that although no one would ever consider him technically gifted, he WAS a master at communication. Which was the whole point of it in her opinion.
