Lou, just to clarify things, the W43 was not a 'hemi'. it was a 'pentroof' engine. The W43 was a 4 valve engine, with two intake valves and two exhaust valves per cylinder arraigned in a 'pentroof' layout. A 'hemi' engine as the name implies has a round or 'hemispherical' (ie - 'half a circle') combustion chambers with the intake and exhaust valves facing each other on opposite sides of the combustion chamber and thus a 'hemi' can only ever have two valves per cylinder as the port layout would be impossible to have four valves connecting to their corresponding ports in a circular fashion.
@loucostabile2 ай бұрын
Martmns, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Since the spark plug wire go into the valve covers like a 426 Hemi, I'm going to get a LOT more views if I call it an Olds Hemi.

Hello Lou, James, Lou, you are with one of the most prolific and standard setting gentlemen in the hobby. I am glad you and James have hooked up. Many of the features in the restoration/build you will never see; that is how far this went beyond a normal restoration. As an example, the trim work inside the seats duplicates the factory to perfection; something that will never be seen. Matching the weld discoloration on the driveshaft is another example of the detail. Then there is the W-43 455 Engine. The work and parts fabrication go beyond belief. Pattern makers, molding specialists and machining experts helped James and his crew bring it all together. A true 1,000-point car. I am happy to have participated in a small way by recreating the chambered tailpipe equipped on this outstanding piece of Oldsmobile Engineering History. Thank you both for sharing this presentation.

I do wish Oldsmobile would of put this engine into production. True the insurance industry was coming down hard on the muscle car - performance with upcoming emission standards, but, Oldsmobile could of produced the W 43 for motorhomes, RVs, and even the boating applications. It is said to be 4 valves per cylinder, special reinforced block w/4 bolt mains, special forged cranks and rods to handle 600 to 700 Hp 455 cubic in motor( really 485 here). The one that got away. Thanks for bringing it up here.

I was quite fortunate to be a GMI co-op engineering student in 1970 with Oldsmobile Div as my sponsor. I do remember 2 of the W43 engines setting in cradles at the Building 64 dyno labs. It wasn't long after that that I became involved with both the air bag and catalytic converter programs.

I remember seeing this in a chapter in an old book on engines. The Oldsmobile engineeering department produced both a pushrod and a dohc version of this engine. They were both four valves per cylinder. The pushrod version was interesting and more challenging to build; the rocker arms looked to be over half a foot long to reach over to the exhaust valves. I hope to run across that book again.

James Kryta of Inline Tube has been one of the heavyweights in keeping Oldsmobile history alive. Olds was doing some wild stuff back around '70 and I remember seeing the Olds experimental engines on the cover of Hot Rod back then. What I wouldn't do to see a real magazine road test of this car to see what could have been. Unfortunately, muscle car magazines seem to be going the way of the W43 Olds- extinct. Hi James, Happy to share cars with you. KZbin is interesting, if you "hit" subscribe and the "little bell" you should get my posts. The best way to help is watch the commercials in full, when you skip them, I don't get paid. That helps me keep the Channel going. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou

Stunning car...and that Resto is amazing. A W-43...WTF Just awesome. It's like the RAM AIR Pontiacs...no, not the RAIII, RAIV, or even the "regular" Holy Grail RAV - there were SkunkWorks motors from Pontiac too. RA VI & RAVII motors were modified 428s with single and dual quad carbs, supposedly putting out 630-650hp

Hey Lou! Oh man, big bro. EPIC Olds right here, man. These 442's are handsome cars-elegant and brutal, both (Boy! We miss Oldsmobile🥲). But what a great reminder this is. I have never heard of this W43 engine, man. And James' ingenuity and creativity is amazing to witness! And Lou, on the eve on my 54th birthday (!!! Jeez Louise JV Johnny is getting up there lol 😜) this 442 100% has me struggling to remain conscious, man. YUP-he knocks me right out. You and James both carrying me to a couch on the side?, or is JV Johnny going on a one shoulder ride of his big bro Lou? I am still 100% a lightweight 🤣🤣after all, my balding head bobbing, limp stocking calves and feet swaying.....😵😵🤪Thanks for all these awesome videos, right here before Christmas, too. God bless ya, big bro! JV Johnny ⚾⚾

The main problem when you own a rare car is that you run the risk of an accident, stone chips, ordinary wear, etc., when you drive it. This is why I’ve never worried about having an “all numbers matching” vintage car. I’d rather own an old classic that I can drive!

Doctor Olds was tired of hearing about brother Dodge and their glory, so he was going to turn things up a notch with 2 extra valves per cylinder, special stregthened 4 bolt main block, fixed the oiling issues around the crankcase. It is said this motor could easily achieve 600 hp to 700 hp. I wish they made this motor for motorhomes/RVs, boating applications, something so it could be available. Only 3 were made, 2 got destroyed, this one half taken apart, but this guy put it back together. ( With the help of machinist and performance guys of formerly Oldsmobile.)

W-43 was engineered and developed in 1969-1970 by John Beltz, Loyd Gill, Joe Jones and Frank Ball. Rated at 500 to 550 hp at 6,500 rpm with a single Rochester Quadrajet on a aluminum manifold, the engine was constructed with both cast-iron heads and block and with aluminum-alloy block and heads (75 pounds lighter than conventional 455-cubic-inch production engine). This engine design featured four valves-per-cylinder with narrow angles for super-efficient combustion chamber design, central spark plugs, and could easily be adapted for chain or gear-driven overhead camshafts. The 455-inch-configuration block has 4.625" cylinder centers, 4.125" bore and 4.250" stroke. Making use of 3.00" main bearings and 2.50" rod journals, the engine was fitted with a specialty prepared cast crank fitted with SAE-1140 forged steel rods, forged 10.20:1 pistons and riding on Morraine 400 bearings. The 4 bolt main block boasts two additional 5/8" oil drain holes. Topping off this unique engine is a pair of four valve heads with 1.750" intake valves (SAE-8640 steel) with 22 degree stems and 1.375" exhausts (214-N stainless steel) with 15 degree stems.Special Stellite seats, bronze alloy guides, o ringed plug tubes, and aluminum rocker arms complete the head treatment. More than 2 engines were assembled both cast iron and aluminum. Get your facts straight Lou!

Someone should cast those heads ! They would fit on any Small or Big Block Gen II Oldsmobile V8 and 4 valves per cylinder would take performance to another level . If the Chinese can cast alloy heads for $500 surly someone can cast these and the intake to match ???
