Lou Costabile “I had” was the key words. I got married, started a family and began a career in law enforcement. In 1975 I needed to go to college so I sold her to a sailor going to San Diego. My brother and I also had an early '68 AMX, Tahiti turquois with charcoal int. 390-Auto. We bought it used in about 1985 in NH. The first 50 cars were reserved by AMC for celebrities and give away promotions. By the vin, our car was #51, so the first car for the general public, in theory at least. "The AMX # tag on the dash" meant nothing in reality and the first 100 badges were set aside for the give aways and not all of them were used. The vin # was a better indicator of a car's actual number. Wonder where that car is today?

Owner stated his 1971 AMX was all original but it had a 1972 ashtray and cigarette lighter. 1971 had a larger flip door that had both the ash tray and cigarette lighter deeply recessed within. AMC changed the design in ‘72 to have the lighter exposed as depicted in this video. I know because I own a 1971 AMX now and had a 1971 SST in HS and College. Probably replaced it because it cracked or some other reason. Regardless, it’s an absolutely stunning car with all the best options; 401/4speed but even more amazing that it’s a true one.owner with 25k miles! AMX RULES!

At AMC regional shows down South...(VERY humid)...we'd get a few AMC cars in a row that had the "Desert Use Only" setting....in early AM, and start them together and see who's car would blow SNOW out of the vents, when A/C chilled. "Desert Use" was in arid areas, with very low humidity. My 1971 Matador 2 door hardtop was ordered in Florida, and had it.

71 is my favourite year of the 2nd Gen AMX... the clean rear taillight bar is just brilliant! Lou this could possibly be your AMC Holy Grail. This is a mid-late year '71 as Indicated by the "handle bar" hood T-stripe. Early model T-stripes actually folded down over the fender instead of curling back up the top of the fender as on this model. As I understand it was modified as the factory had issues lining up the stripe between the hood and fender in its original form. Additionally I briefly saw this gentleman's printed engine specs on an easel which claimed 330 hp. and 430 lb torque. Again my understanding is that motor was an earlier version of the 401 with a higher compression ratio about 10.5:1. I believe these high # motors did not make it into many of these beauties. Again my understanding that mid-year or so the ratiings changed to net at 225 hp with a drop in compression to 9:5 and slightly dwindled torque #'s I am a bit fuzzy on the details though I don't think I am to far off... perhaps someone can either correct me or corroborate my facts?... Nonetheless these cars were light - under 3500 lbs and very fast. Excellent top-end. With taller gearing 2.87/3.15's they could reach and exceed 140 mph and get there VERY quickly. Not to mention the success of this model as a Penske-Donahue Trans-Am champion!! Thank you Lou - just a spectacular example of one of my all-time favorite American cars.

Hi Audie Conrad, High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
@rondyechannel13995 жыл бұрын
Audie, AMC's better head flow and other efficiencies kept the engine power the same. The Dog Leg head out flowed the earlier square exhaust port even if it had slightly less compression. The 1972 401 was rated net and produced more power than the 455 Pontiac and the Corvette according to Wikipedia. When Portland, Oregon opened their new 'Fremont' I-5 freeway bridge over the Willamette River, a green and white AMX with a 401 went over it, exceeding 100 MPH, about 30 minutes after the opening ceremony! Guess how I know?

@@rondyechannel1399 - by the time I got to buying my first ride it was 1976. A factory ordered Hornet X hatchback with a 304. With a 2 bbl and 3:15's handling pkg. automatic. Although it would keep up with most of the crap coming out of Detroit at the time (at least for its segment) it wasn't going to keep with your bad-boy. The two-seat AMX was discontinued after 1970 and the AMX became a "package" offered on the Javelin. This is a somewhat unique car as it was the first Javelin that ran the then new 401, but the last Javelin than ran the 401 in the high compression format and required premium gas. Sort of the high point for the Javelin.

@@loucostabile Hello, Lou. My first new car was a sundance orange '72 Ventura II, 307 3-speed, which I loved. But the shop I worked for also did bank rep's, the majority of those were hot entry-level cars bought by guys who bought them, then got sent to 'Nam, and just let them go back to the bank. Nova SS 's, Mustangs, etc. Do you know how easy it is to hot-wire a '68 Charger 383? I got to drive em all. Sometimes they lost the keys.

Javelin's were such good looking cars. And the 390/401 was no joke. Very underrated. The Javelin's were great in Trans Am racing. Love AMC muscle cars...especially the Javelin Trans Am cars. They were beating Boss 302 Mustangs/Cougars, Z28 Camaro's, and AAR Cuda's/Dodge Challenger T/A's on a regular basis. Awesome cars👍👍

Its reminding me of the Aus '72 - 73 Ford Falcon XB/XA kind of. Or vice versa. It would be interesting to mod one to Black on Black Pursuit Special (MAd Max) design.. I know 'tis a sin, but I cant help mentioning it; havent seen other comments saying this. Of course, no blower, the one the film (1979) was cosmetic. Great car, and of a dying breed of real American design and ingenuity.

Yea I saw that too, It also had some other weird stuff on there that seemed out of place as well like a break in the middle of the paragraph. I did notice that he ordered it from the Wappenger Falls AMC dealership, which was just around the corner from where I grew up. I used to raid their junk yard they had directly behind it for years.
