If you're going to drive a Rambler , you're supposed to have a bunch of pens in a pocket protector and have a crew cut...... At least that's what I remember from growing up in the 60's.....oh yeah, I almost forgot the white short sleeve shirt with the skinny black tie. Nice car though.....dig the console and floor shift.

Allot of people forget that 7 years prior AMC / Rambler had the 2nd fastest production automobile Rebel 1957; 2nd only to fuel injected Corvette. & the year prior to this 1964 Ambassador; They were the no.3 automobile producer in the U.S. in 1963. Thanks Lou for bringing this low production AMC / Rambler Ambassador; I always thought the H stood for Hurricane a high performance option model.

That was a great period for AMC. That reverb feature was popular in that era. GM had it also. Gave the radio that echo chamber sound.

It's definitely a survivor! I like this car a lot! The 1964 Rambler Ambassador 990 H is a 2-door hard top in its original coat of black paint, The interior looked a little rough, but it shows that it was a barn find. It has the 327 CI V8 engine with the Flash-o-Matic automatic transmission behind it. Sweet ride Lou!

The 2 door hardtop was also available in the Classic. But only with the 232 Typhoon or a 287. The 232 was introduced in a special run of around 2500 cars in Canary Yellow with a black top. Also available with a Twin Stick overdrive. Last year for the 195 in the Classic. Passed up buying a Typhoon in about 72. One thing about these cars is if they where in a rear end collision the whole back end could get bent down over the ear wheel openings. Happened to my brother. Twice. Once in 63 4 door and a couple of years later in a 64 hardtop.

The Flash-O-Matic had a dual drive selector position. There was an "L" at the bottom, but the "D" quadrant with a "1" below it and a "2" above it. When in the "1" position the automatic shifting would be 1-2-3. When in the "2" position, the automatic shifting would be 2-3. Ford Cruise-O-Matics operated the same way through 1966. I find it funny when people don't understand how their own car works. And, with the Ambassadors, they were always just the same sized bodies as other Ramblers, except the American in 1963.

Even a bit of a '64 Chevelle look to it. AMC had several cars that really look almost like other cars. The '67 Ambassador is almost a twin sister car to a '67 Fairlane, Javelin's and Mustangs are also similar. But who copied who on some of these is questionable as the Marlin was 2 years before the '67 Charger, and the '67 Rebel was a year ahead of the Roadrunner. Interesting cars.

Really like this car. The 64 was a great year for the Ambassador (65 & 66 got upsized, but the vertical headlamp work out just did not work from a styling perspective). There was a clean look about it, and almost racy - especially here with the white letter blackwalls. They were essentially mid-sized for 64 - about 2 inches shorter than a Chevelle, but with much (!) more deluxe appointments. I have laways loved the window crank / door handles - no one else did them this way. That 327 has some poke too, 270 hp - in 64 your Malibu SS topped out with a 283 & 195 hp.

Hola Lou, buenas tardes. Me preocupe. Segui adelante. Gracias Lou.

Trans "Hello Lou, good afternoon. What a nice model you give us today. Here in Argentina, Mr. Henry John Kaiser founded his company IKA. Kaiser Industries Argentina. In it I manufacture several of the models of the Rambler line. I was very young, but I remember the Rambler Ambassador. A 4-door sedan with electric windows and factory air conditioning. You don't know what it was like to travel on the roads. A pleasure on wheels. Wide and fluffy seats. The rear ones have folding arms in the center. The front backrest extended and formed almost a bed with the butt. A cochazo. On a trip I was sitting in the back. He played by going up and down the window glass. Suddenly I stop going up and down. I worry. I thought I had broken it. Later I learned that the driver, in his door, had a key to lock the windows. He had done it to preserve the life of the little engine in the window. 😂😂😂😂. Thank you so much Lou for registering it and sharing it with all of us. Very good job. Keep going. Thank you Lou."

I used to see Ramblers all the time in the 1960's growing up. This was the top of the line for Rambler. I think it went up from 330 440 550 up to 990. My Grandparents had a 66 Rambler station wagon. They kept it for many years and still looked like new.

Hi, Lou! Rambler came up with a great-looking car in the 1963 Classic and Ambassador, and they were named Car of the Year by Motor Trend magazine. The '63s had been styled by Edmund Anderson, who had left AMC in 1961 and gave it a concave front end contour with an electric shaver grille. As you can see, this '64 has a flat front end, styled by Anderson's successor Dick Teague, but notice how Teague left evidence of the concave treatment in the fenders by filling in the space with metal. Notice too how the back panel matches the grille. Two-door hardtops were new to the Ambassador lines in '64, replacing two-door sedans. As for the 990 designation, well, basically in '63 and '64 you had a progressive numbering system across the Rambler line, beginning with the American 220, 330 and 440, moving up to the Classic 550, 660 and 770, and finally the Ambassador 880 ('63 only) and 990, so there you go. In all, I think that in their day the 1963 and 1964 Ambassadors were probably the most ideal way to drive in luxury and comfort yet be sensible at the same time! Chrysler bought out American Motors in 1987, which likely explains why you have AMC vehicles at this Carlisle Chrysler event. Anyway, Lou, I'm very happy to see this car spotlighted on this channel, and many thanks to you and Rob and Connor for taking us along on this fine ride from the pride of Kenosha!

My grandfather's last car was a 1964 Rambler Classic and that horn honk would wake the dead. So thanks for tooting the horn at the end. Loudest horn I ever honked. The two things that didn't last on my grandad's Rambler were the vacuum wipers and the seat upholstery. I think the muffler and exhaust were ceramic coated and lasted almost forever. That "one squirter" was actually a 2-squirter with two jets pumped by a foot pedal vacuum pump.

I had to laugh when he opened the hood and there was the notorious vacuum windshield wiper motor. Within 5-10 years they wore out and if you went to any junkyard and opened the hood of any Rambler the vacuum motor was missing. I learned to drive on my dad’s 1966 Ambassador 990 4 door with the 327 V8 2 barrel. It’s still my most favorite car after 57 years.

One of the interesting things about AMC cars is over the history of there cars the model name became the brand names. The brand was Nash, the model name Rambler. Nash gave was routed the Rambler, two of the models were Ambassador and American. American became the brand, Eagle became the the model. American was dropped as a brand, just to become AMC as the brand and company name. Eagle remained the model. Chrysler boutique AMC and Eagle became the brand with Vision and Talon. This is where it ended as Chrysler had to many brands that the models were all the same car and the public didn't take to the Eagle brand. Really all Chrysler wanted was the Jeep brand anyway, so the rest of AMC was doomed become non existent.

Beautiful Ambassador Lou! Ramblers were really well built. My Grandfather’s last New car was a ‘62 Ambassador 327 4 barrel dual exhaust. The body style is not as attractive as the ‘64 you share in this video. The ‘62 was however a wonderful car.

If you pause at 2:53 inside the trunk on the left side as well as the right you see 4 silver colored almost like large rivets? Curious if anyone knows what they are, I have a 63 Rambler 550 and it has the same things in the trunk, thanks David.

@@loucostabile Thanks for replying. I was poking some fun but really love those lassic Rambers. I wanted a green '67 American back in the late '70s that was for sale by out town mechanic/filling station. 350.00!!! I was 16 and my dad talked me out of it since it was rusted and had a unibody. I wanted tht car so bad. INstead my grandfather decided to give me his '70 Catalina sled since he never used it much at that atime and drove his pickup. It''s a 4 door and I STILL HAVE IT TO THIS DAY! IT's not show stoppers like those that you present. Maybe some day. Love your channel! and all of he wonderful folks you have on.

they made ambassadors in 2 trim levels 880 and 990, and H means hardtop, rambler classics came in 3 trim levels 550, 660 and 770, rambler americans were lower numbers I think like 440 and 330, but I'm not too sure about that
