My father ordered a 61 Nomad wagon. With the 6 and a powerglide, turquoise 9 pass. I was 15 and was so embarrassed it was the most underpowered car I ever drove. We lived on Montauk and my mom taught school in East Hampton,it had a top end of just over 70 on the straights between the two towns. She hated it,my father who didn't drive it said it was Ok till we went on vacation and he drove it to Gulfport MS. Immediately traded it for a 62 Pontiac Catalina convertible with a 389 tri power.😅

Hi, Lou! Well, you knew I'd come a-callin' for this episode! To clarify, the '61 was the last full-size Nomad, and the top-trim big Chevy wagon officially began wearing the Impala name beginning in 1962. The Nomad name turned up again from 1968 to 1972 on the cheapest Chevelle wagon. BTW, the biggest engine you could get in a full-size '61 Chevy wagon was a 348 V-8, but you could get a 409 in '62. Sure wouldn't mind having one of these myself, although I'd prefer one that was original or stock. Many thanks to you, Hank and Deb for sharing this ride with all the inside and outside horses with us!

I wonder why it would not have six tail lights. Oh wiat, the brochure proved that it came with four! Love these lessons Ilearned today. When I was growing up, a friend's mom had a 1961 Chevy station wagon. Not sure what model she had, but if my memory serves me, it was bare bones, definitely not a Nomad. What a great car this is. One of my friend’s parents drove a ‘61 Nomad back in the sixties, so I can say I have seen such a car, but not since 1970. Anyhoo, Hank did a nice job of upgrading this beauty without spoiling its looks at all. 1961 was an unusual year for the Chevrolet line. That was the year in which there was such a car as the BelAir four-door hardtop, and bubbletop. So I guess it’s fitting this would be the last year for the full-size Nomad. Great video Lou, on a very unusual Nomad, that I'm glad is getting such positive recognition. A LOT of guys here ONLY know the name 'Nomad' in connection with the classic tri-5 years ('55-'57) of the gorgeous 2-door. Those 2-doors were VERY expensive for that time. They were top-of-the-line luxury when most wagon buyers were looking for practicality, which meant the 4-door, before then, then, and ever since. Also the beautiful glass 'greenhouse' of the car made it hot on sunny days. So everything that made it so wonderful, also worked against it in the real world. The '55-'57 was a 'halo' car to attract buyers into Chevy showrooms, where they'd likely buy one of the more ordinary wagons. The 2-door model was an indulgence GM could afford, but pulled the plug when the all-new '58 came out, having the Nomad start pulling its weight in terms of sales. It was (of course) still a top-of-the-line wagon as a 4-door, and (on the '58) even retained the 7 tailgate chrome 'bars' of the previous models. Other than that though, it didn't really look like a 'Nomad' as such anymore. The '59. '60 and '61 (as seen here) did not retain the bars at all.

I am also a Hank. In the early sixties our family acquired a 59 Pontiac Catalina Safari Wagon 4 door. In earlier years Safari Wagons were all 2 doors. We had it until the power glide tranny gave up and Dad did not want to lay out the money to fix it. The motor was a 326 small block. Chevrolet also had a similar stock color like this in the mid fifties for the Bel Aire's. They called it Rio Red. Also in 1968 Chevy briefly resurrected the Nomad name. But was on a 4 door Chevelle wagon. They did not sell well, but a friend of mine who owned his own towing company in New Jersey picked up a used one around 1971.

😊 Hello again, Lou! I just finished viewing the '67 Chrysler ragtop, and I decided to come here and view this nice Chevy wagon from 1961! This is a very nice station wagon, and I don't care if it's been modified! It's even better now than when it was new, especially now that it has a 454 in it. I bet that wagon can really move, and with a four-speed yet! This would surely get the family to their favorite picnic spot in a hurry! The '61 Nomad is comparably trimmed like an Impala. The other full-sized Chevy wagons for '61 were the Brookwood (Biscayne trimmed) and Parkwood (comparable to the Bel Air). From '62 to '68, the big Chevy wagons carried the same names as the other body styles. There was a Chevelle Nomad from '68 to '72, and I'm not sure if anyone knows this, but the name also appeared on full-sized Chevy vans from the late '70s to the early '80s! I wouldn't be surprised if the Nomad name came back. Chevy ought to make a small pickup as a response to Ford's new Maverick pickup, and call it Nomad! How great that would be! Finally, a bit of irony : My middle name is Henry, and my family calls me Hank, which is a nickname for Henry (like Tom for Thomas and Bob for Robert). And that's not all - I have a younger brother whose name is Damon - Nomad spelled backwards! Thanks again, Lou, for another interesting video! I'll be looking out for more, as always!

I am sure to get a lot of hate for this, but right after graduating high school, 50 years ago, I was a thrill seeking 17 year old that drove in my first demolition derby the the county fair. I am not bragging but rather regretting the fact that the car I drove was a rather rusted out 1961 Chevy Nomad wagon. It had a 283 engine and automatic transmission. Cars like that were cheap and plentiful back then. I look back to some of the things that I did when I was younger and wish I had those same cars now. It is amazing how 50 years can change a guy's perspective on things. I am happy to see that there is at least one good specimen surviving out there.

Yeah, the Nomad (4-door) wagon came back on the '68-'72 gen Chevelle, then gone forever starting with the totally different '73-'77 gen.

With Hank only getting 6 miles to a gallon, I suspect he is running a 411 gear ratio. Perfect for towing the yacht to the ocean.

Nice wagon - wiki incorrectly states that the 1961 Nomad was only offered in 9 passenger mode - Mr. M might want to make a correction there

Chevy made the Nomad in '71 and '72 on the Chevelle 4 door base. It was the cheapest model, I think.

6 miles per gallon lol I thought it would be fun in CALIFORNIA 😅 Not when the gas is over 5 dollars a gallon, lol. Nice car love to see the 4 doors. They are different, that's why people look. My 67 Buick is the same way you don't see two tones or 4 doors.

When I was a little kid in the 60s we had a 60 Chevy Impala wagon, I'm not sure what trim level other than Impala. We took it from Jersey to Miami on vacation for years, put the seat down and my sister along with 2 of our friends had enough room to play all the way to Florida and back 🤣 Thanks Lou, you always spark fond memories 💚👍👍😎✌️

Delicious car and vintage. I loathe anytime someone takes a six cylinder car and puts in a non-stock V-8. I had a six cylinder Mustang (1969) and had to sell. Part of my condition of sale was that the car had to remain a 6 cylinder or no sale. I really don't like rare vintage cars being ruined by "upgrades". Thanks for sharing this, Lou, but have no appreciation for destroying originality of a rare car. The only upside of this whoring of the car was that it was not one of the overdone and worthless "LS" swaps which it seems any primate does on cars these days.
