That noise on startup is pretty normal. It seems to be from the compressor working harder at the beginning to pressurize the line set.

I had this exact same problem with a Trane 5 ton (it used a Copeland compressor). The compressor failed 6 months after the warranty ended. The installer came back and gave me a slight discount on a new compressor and filter dryer, (he insisted on installing another Copeland scroll compressor). I had the exact same startup noise only worse and the lights in my house dimmed every time the unit started. Installing a hard start kit did not help. I knew there had to be a solution and I found it. It's called the Micro-Air Easy Start. Google Micro-Air and try one, its amazing and very easy to install. Now I can even run my air conditioner on my home generator!

This has to be something with Copeland. I have 2 new Goodman systems with the same issue and another contractor I know is having a similar issue with Carrier brands. My supplier said there’s an additive for the system and if that doesn’t work we will need to replace the compressor. I’ve heard from several others that changing the compressor remedied the problem

Is this why the installers don't want to tell you this when they sell you a brand new unit? I spent thousands of dollars last month on a Lennox unit replacing my 20 Y/O YORK unit just to invite in 3 problems. Mind you the installer says it's normal on all three and didn't do anything and says I will have to pay another $50 just for him to tell me that. 1) Loud AC startup exactly like yours but runs ok afterwards. Felt like a bomb went off outside my bedroom. My old AC unit has a compressor sleeve on it supposedly to help with the noise. Is that true? 2) Indoor air handler blower noise during startup and when unit turns off. Sounded like the blower is brushing up against its outer wall, very pronounced especially on the last 2 revolutions. Big problem as the air handler sits just outside my master bedroom door. The tech says it's due to variable speed motor and I know my unit isn't one cause it's set speed. Why does it matter if the motor is variable speed? When power is turned on/off, blower fan will still turn the same speed in its first few revolutions on starting and stopping. 3)Constant whizzing sound when the air is blowing. I cannot tell what it is and where it's coming from! Yet again he says that's normal. Very frustrating. I did not spent $$$$ to put up with this scam.

It for sure sounds like issues that could be resolved. If he is unwilling to solve the problems then you do have recourse. I have people call me up regularly with horror stories and I’m more than willing to help the homeowner make it right. I usually check the system out and give a detailed report of what needs to be addressed. There will probably be more issues too. Then you can go back to the company to get it resolved. If the refuse then you can either go to the manufacturer or your local contractors board with a complaint. I hope this helps. Good luck.

@@WhopperJr - Lennox rep and the installer came out to add two 90 degree elbows on the compressor suction line (the smaller line) and added a time delay of some sort for startup. The final piping looks weird but it seems to help a little as I haven't been startled by it anymore but its still there when you listen for it. Either that or I'm just used to it. Apparently this method is also illustrated in the installation piping schematic manual which came with the outdoor unit! The manual was found inside the protective metal cover of the outdoor unit so you can check the paperwork yourself. I might try out the compressor sound blanket in the future but who knows if that really works to reduce noise. Good luck.

64 isn't too cold to be running an a/c. I keep mine on automatic, if it gets above 75 indoors the a/c comes on, if it gets below 70 the heat comes on. If you're cooking or have a lot of people inside you may need it to run even cooler outside. Here in Houston it may be 64 outside, but if the humidity is high you still need the a/c to dehumidify. Never understood why people wait till it gets 80 or even warmer in their house before they turn their a/c on or 65 or cooler to turn their heat on, I just keep it on automatic and have my work schedule programmed in the thermostat. I do have it to where the compressor won't run if it is below 40 outside.

@AbilityJohn
@AbilityJohn 8 жыл бұрын
It isn't normal in this case. Scroll compressors do start harder than reciprocating compressors. How long is the line set and what diameter is the big copper line (the auction line) on your system?

They shouldn't sound like that. It's straining to get going. Hard start capacitors will extend the life of it to give it more amps to get going, but eventually it will fail. Could be one year Could be 10 years! Check your disconnect for proper voltage and check compressor Amp draw and resistance.

My unit is a 3 1/2 ton Goodman looks exactly like yours and it makes it extremely loud banging sound when it starts up for like a second. The noise is extremely loud and seems like the type of noise that is causing damage to the unit when it starts up. Once it gets running it runs really smoothly quietly and perfectly after that. What solution did you ultimately go with. Did you ever get your problem fixed. Because I feel there is something that I need to do to prevent the loud banging sound on start up. Thank you very much!

Try the eliminating the contactor as part of your noise problem. Just pull the disconnect, check with a meter and bridge L1 to T1 and L2 to T2. Reinstall disconnect and see if that helps. If it does put a sure switch on it. If nit try a crank case heater.

How did you diagnose the "faulty compressor"? I've had a loud startup since brand new and had the regional techs and reps out and they ok'd the unit. Said it was running perfect. Even if it wasn't, I'd be responsible for labor which absurdly runs hundreds of dollars on the brand new unit that I just had installed. So, you appear to know your stuff also, if you're looking at all the numbers and it appears to be running fine, how do you diagnose it as bad? Furthermore, everyone affiliated with Rheem wants to say "oh that's just normal for scroll compressors" but they don't have to be embarrassed to have somebody stay in the guest room that's unsleepable. How do you convince Rheem that there is a problem?

@AbilityJohn
@AbilityJohn 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but I would need more data. I’ve seen people over size a system because it’s the smallest they could get. When you say “bonus room” I think 200-300 ft2. The smallest central AC would be 1.5 ton= 750 ft2 (Depending on where you are) This would cause compressor slugging or liquid to the compressor, making it loud. Also wouldn’t remove humidity and shortened run times. I’ve seen this situation in where a 4 ton unit couldn’t cool a single wide mobile home properly. There was no choice but to replace the whole unit downsizing to a 3 ton. Over sized units cause bug problems, lots of noise, break downs, higher power bills and ineffective cooling.
@jaysarchive7325

I live in Florida. I size my customers units 500-600 ft2 per ton for optimum humidity removal. 2 ton = 1000 - 1200 ft2 Your neighbor should have a mini split instead. Very quiet! Less power! Better humidity control.
