I think perhaps the most haunting thing about Larson’s ‘Louder Than Words’ is that- it just ends. He makes such brilliant commentary on the world, commentary that can apply to practically any period of time, he says what he needs to say, and after a small yet beautiful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ at the end of the song that may or may not have made me shed a tear or two… nothing. A few final notes and it fades to silence. In the film adaptation, there’s this big clash of notes and instruments, leaving a honourable and positive tone on not only the song, but the entire film; here? Nothing. I find that so wonderful. The fact it just ends leaves you wanting more, but everything is already said and done; Larson has said what he wanted to say. The impact that Larson had is immense, and it’s no wonder. I would give anything to tell him that he actually made it. That ‘Rent’ was a success that helped shape modern musicals. It’s beautiful. Truly beautiful.

This is the first time time I hear him sing. I find it interesting that even though Andrew looks a lot like Jonathan in the movie, they didn’t make him sing like him. Jonathan’s singing makes me think of rock singers, rather than theater performers. I can’t explain it well, but the way he shifts the melody and pronounces words… This may not sound as perfect or professional as the movie version, but it has a certain quality and charm to it. Anyway, great song!

This brings back memories of 9/11…. So back around 9/11/01, I had ordered two things from Amazon: the Broadway cast album for “tick, tick…BOOM!” (pre-order) and an organic chemistry textbook that the prof had recommended. I remember how the “tick, tick…BOOM!” CD was late due to 9/11 and the planes getting grounded for a couple of days. When I got it in the mail, I remember being a little scared of it because the words “tick tick BOOM” reminded me of what had just happened in the US. It took me a couple of days to work up the courage to pop that CD into my Discman and listen to it. I guess it depends on what’s happening in the world when the cast album is played. All of it finds some way to be apt and be a commentary or counterpoint to what’s happening around us. It’s a little creepy, maybe, but it’s comforting to know that folks like Jon are on our side and will continue to fight for us, even after they’re gone.

Wow reading that really gave me goosebumps, I wasn’t born when it happened, but from the stories my parents and older sister have told me throughout the years, I can automatically tell that it was one of the most horrific experiences that they have ever had (especially since they were all living in New York at the time). 9/11 had such an impact on so many Americans, I can deeply sense the pain and trauma from everyone I hear who actually experienced it.

Why do we play with fire? Why do we run our finger through the flame? Why do we leave our hand on the stove- Although we know we're in for some pain? Oh, why do we refuse to hang a light When the streets are dangerous? Why does it take an accident Before the truth gets through to us? Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. Michael: Why should we try to be our best When we can just get by and still gain? Why do we nod our heads Michael and Jonathan: Although we know Michael: The boss is wrong as rain? Jonathan: Why should we blaze a trail When the well worn path seems safe and Jonathan and Susan: So inviting? Susan: How-as we travel, can we Susan and Jonathan: See the dismay- And keep from fighting? Jonathan: Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds Michael and Susan: Cages or wings? Ah... All: Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Jonathan Actions speak louder than words Michael and Susan: Louder than, louder than Jonathan: What does it take To wake up a generation? All: How can you make someone Take off and fly? Jonathan If we don't wake up And shake up the nation We'll eat the dust of the world Wondering why Michael and Susan: Why

I don’t care what any of y’all say, you can’t tell me Lin wasn’t the perfect match for this role in Tik Tik boom. Maybe he isn’t the best singer, Jonathan wasn’t a singer either, they are composers and I honestly don’t think anyone could embody that role better than Lin. (This has nothing to do with Andrew Garfield’s performance I loved it but I hate it when people say Lin shouldn’t have played this role)
@haileygocke30742 жыл бұрын
i actually think lin did a wonderful job as director. i don’t know how i would feel about lin playing jon since they’re singing styles are quite different with lin’s just leaning towards rap and hip hop rather than rock (but again that’s my opinion from what i’ve seen). also, i think it was important to have someone who looks like jon and has a little bit more experience acting and not in the broadway sense. again, this is all just my opinion and i really don’t mean to argue or start something.

I think you find if we can rid ourselves of attaching values “good” and “bad” to singing, that there is so much beauty everywhere that we miss otherwise. Jonathan Larson being the prime example of artistic, unique, unconventional rawness that exists in pure passion.
