Voting was compulsory in Australia before 1967, at pain of being fined for not voting. The reason that Aborigines were "excluded" from being forced to vote was because of A): the impracticability of forcing Aborigines in remote areas to vote, and B): A general sense that they should not be forced to do so. It had nothing to do with not "recognising" the existence of those people. The lies just go on and on...
@urbnctrl

So you can force them into genocide and near exctinction but not to vote, love the thought process there mate! real class act. This is so divisive. Will turn Australians against other Australians. This voice .... is guaranteed to fail and will tear the Nation apart (including the vast majority of Aborigines who still wont have a voice they agree with)... Assimilation is probably the only way. That goes for all Australian citizens. We should not care if that Citizen has lived here for one year or 1000 years. Treat us all the same, that's fair... no argument. Without denying the past, until the truth is not clouded in misinformation the Australian public will never be comfortable or convinced that 3 percent of the population can dictate how the other 97 percent should live. That's why referendums often fail to get over the line.
@savagegfry

Unless they cheat, this will fail also. This is a very incidious and deceptive way to have a referendum, which ultimately is really about making Australia a minority run, fascist communist, corrupt, republic. It would totally replace our constitution, because every aspect of the constitution could be immediately mandated as illegal, including the right to own property!!! Look to NZ, where all public water infrustructure, paid for by all kiwis is now owned by the Maori tribes!!! Easy fixed. Have a referendum - Only one question - Are you an Australian citizen or an aboriginal? If you answer you are an aboriginal you no longer receive any assistance from any government body in Australia. No assistance in any way, especially financial. I'm certain that all those who answer aboriginal would love to live the way their forebears did, being such proud black people, before the evil white man came and colonised the great land that is now Australia, and took the aboriginals out of the Stone Age. And the aboriginals who were present when the evil white man arrived were not the first peoples. Mungo Man was, and now so many people are trying to change history, saying that aboriginals were here from between 70,000-100,000 years ago.
@dagwould
@dagwould 2 жыл бұрын
Jacobs is having a lend of us....the 'colonisers brought the patriarchy'? Aboriginal tribes were far more patriarchal than anything in the west, ever! Women were treated as chattels, pimped by their 'husbands' as favours to other men, beaten mercilessly for the smallest infractions, murdered for going onto men's sacred land, and both boys and girls mutilated as a rite of puberty! OTOH, the British brought the rule of law, generous gifts of food to starving tribes people, and looked after the mixed blood children where were outcast from tribes. Their laws sought to protect the Aborigines, the King at the time of settlement required that they be treated honourably and trade relations be sought. Aborigines were offered employment and worked as police. Smallpox: the accusation of 'spreading' smallpox is anachronistic at best. Before it became known that germs existed and carried disease, no one had any idea how disease spread; often putting it down to 'bad air'. I understand that smallpox was introduced, inadvertently, by Indonesian fishermen to the north.

How about Black Emu author Bruce Pascoe? Routinely describes himself as a Bunurong, Yuin and Tasmanian Aboriginal man. Born in Victoria and shown to be a charlatan who's roots, genealogical records suggest, all his ancestors came from England, mainly Dudley in the Midlands and a few specifically from Cornwall. No indigenous elders of any tribe accept his claim. All of his ancestry is English.

Isn't it interesting how Government is in effect admitting that the people are not in fact represented by their elected officials. There would be no need for the "voice" if MPs and Senators were the voice. Maybe the more responsible thing for Labour to do would be to reform the ethics of our political process. Let politicians speak for their electorate not the party. By the way, I am Wiradjuri myself. Is the next absurd step to set up a "voice" for each and every other subset of our Australian community? Another thing is that Aboriginal tribes to this day don’t have a lot to do with each other. An elder I know didn’t have any contacts he could give me for the neighbouring tribe. The Voice is guaranteed to be shambolic in presenting a unified voice for Aboriginal people. The MPs and Senators have a more limited area and are perfectly adequate. If there is something to say why aren’t they saying it? The Voice is a Trojan horse and if it gets up, like the Gay marriage vote, it will be taken as a green light for things that were never discussed before hand.

We all migrated from Africa near Olduvai Gorge - though the CCP claim there was another evolutionary efflorescence in northen China. But the 3 or 4 waves of migration to Australia, came from India. Each successive wave pushed earlier arrivals further south, due to warfare. A separate migration/invasion came from Melanesia (PNG today) around the Torres Strait then began moving south. And many still do today!

Why does "dialogue" immediately have to become "talking shit?" Why are we as a species so god-damned afraid of hearing each other's stories? Are we afraid to be accused? Where on the "spectrum" do you have to be to be "correct" enough that your neighbor won't crucify you for being open and honest? Why do we get so entrenched in a single manner of thinking that we are incapable of seeing anything through the lens of another person's eyes?

It doesn't matter where you live , the victimhood points are what they seek, due to the money they are inevitably after. The same noise is here in Canada, and they want people who had nothing to do with the harms they claim to pay for it through feeling guilty somehow. The entire thing reeks of race baiting, and using skin colour to claim something that doesn't really belong to them which is of course the taxes everyone else has to pay. Look, evaluate your position, and regardless of how poorly you've been treated, talk to people of different backgrounds and ask how they have been treated. If they aren't politicians , I'm pretty sure you'll find that the average person has no upper hand regadless of skin colour and other racially driven motives. This is racism, driving a narative based on skin colour. Its a wedge that is being driven by poorly advised individuals. If this continues and people keep seeing value in it, it is unavoidable, eventually racism in its ugliest form will be something that occurs.
