My parents divorced when I was three and this scene makes me ill for the shit my dad had to endure when I was a little kid. My dad raised 7 of us while my mom "found herself" and he was struggling to keep us fed, clothed, and with health insurance, my mom would swing by and buy us fun stuff here and there and I ( very young kid) would talk about how great mom was when I would get back home to my dad. And you know what, my dad took it, never said a bad word about my mom and acted happy for me and my new toys. My Dad was a stud and I genuinly hurt thinking about what pain he must have went through during that time (and partly because of my words, however unintentional). Thank you for sacraficing so much so my siblings and I could make it through life.

hahaha Alexis, it was a different time I guess....... I'm the youngest so I'm pretty glad he didn't stop at 6!! hahaha. Yes, having 7 kids sure made it difficult financially for us and even though he had a nice job that would nornally afford a nice middle class life for a regular sized family, because he had to pay for child care, alimony, tons of food, tons of insurance, tons of co-pays, tons of braces, tons of sports expenses, etc, you can see where he didn't have enough money to take us to Disneyland or buy us the newest bike or other toys. I used to think he was letting us down a little when I was a kids because I ddn't understand how money works but I did understand that my mom would buy me toys. I still feel guilt for those thougths. And I am in awe at how my dad kept it together and swallowed his pride and never explained WHY mom could afford to buy us shit and he couldn't due to all his cash going to keep us fed, clothed, and healthy.

It drives me crazy when people focus on the wrong details. The tooth brushing was something loosely believable and parental that was a vehicle for the scene to happen. It’s not important whether the kid can brush her own teeth. If you learn how to suspend your disbelief you’ll figure out how to enjoy art and get deep satisfaction from it instead of nitpicking irrelevant details.

When I was very young (about 3 years old?), I've ever told my mother that I didn't love her. I forgot the reason why, but perhaps because she had scolded me for something. And that night she came to me and was crying saying "you say you don't love mummy?". I remember this vividly because it was when I realised I had thoroughly hurt my mother's feelings and that any anger or misunderstanding that occurred was transient in comparison to how much my mum loved me. Perhaps not very related to this video..

I think an honest conversation about feelings and relationships might do wonders in a situation like this. Just explain to the kid why it hurts to hear something like that, and why you should always try to spare a person's feelings if you can. Why and how, you know, teach them important social skills. But also talk about what you want to do to make her feel differently. She likes nicer food? Tell her you're going to take cooking classes and learn how to be a better cook for her. Even if she doesn't appreciate it now, she'll remember it for later. I've seen clips from the show where Louis is having fun cooking dinner for him and the girls, and it makes me wonder if that wasn't heavily influenced by this painful conversation.
