The first person to fly the English Channel in an aeroplane was a Frenchman called Louis Blériot. The flight took place on 25 July 1909 and won Blériot a prize of £1,000 from the Daily Mail. An earlier attempt five days earlier, by Englishman Herbert Latham, had ended when he had ditched in the sea.Blériot, a motorcar headlamp manufacturer, had injured his foot and walked to his plane with the aid of crutches.
He took off at 4.37am and, guided by smoke from a French destroyer, he spotted St Margaret’s Bay. Turning towards Dover he was caught by the wind and made a crash landing in Northfall Meadow, behind the Castle, breaking the undercarriage and propeller. The whole journey had taken 20 minutes.
I visited the memorial which is in the form of a stone silhouette of Blériot’s plane and is set into the ground at the place where he landed.

Very interesting video! Like many my age (retired) we learnt of Blériot’s achievement through comic strips as a young lad. (Victor?) Thanks for sharing a historical experience! 60 years later from those flimsy machines man walked on the moon - incredible!

Yeah those ground breaking pioneers certainly paved the way - especially with their bravery. Victor! I remember that. I also remember such things as Brooke Bond Tea cards and albums which I’m sure Blériot would have been included in that!

On doing some checking l actually thought Bleri'ot did have some competion, i may be wrong. Maybe you can enlighten me.

Well I mention a few in the video. I know that one ofthe competitors was schedule to attempt the flight on the very same day Bleriot did it, but Bleriot woke up early and got the flight in even before his competitors had time to have breakfast!

I wanted to recapture a bit more clearly your talk on Louis Bleriot and his counterparts Hubert Latham, Charles Delambert and Arthur Seymour so that I now have a better understanding as who you are talking about. French not bad incidentally. However a nice talk Tudor.
