If you actually listen to the show you would know that he says that his grandma was rich but she treated his mom like shit and was extremely emotionally abusive/manipulative. So they hardly ever went to see his grandma, and his grandma never helped them financially with anything. His dad worked hard but his mom couldn't work because she was a crazy person. So basically they lived on a single income with quite a few kids. Opie lies about some shit, but this isn't one of the things.
