+Allenluvable - A tip, as far as getting them to drink it: Use a plastic syringe, then hold the mouth closed... I've had to do that with a cat who wouldn't swallow a pill (he'd hold it in his mouth for two min and then spit it out when I let go). But if you squirt a little water with a syringe (there's no needle!), they have to swallow. Voila! (That was a tip from a vet btw.) My 2 cents...

A couple of years after Team Coco uploaded this interview on KZbin, our beloved sweet family dog ate rat poison that my parents left out in the basement to treat our rat problem. (We immediately scrapped all of the rat poison in our home afterwards.) Thank GOD that I happened to be in the basement at the same time to see it happen. I remember this interview clearly: Louis CK's emotions and dramatic movements...the audience's laughter kept on ringing in my head, because I knew EVERY minute at that point with our family dog mattered. I immediately googled help and no stores were open that sold "activated charcoal". Finally, with my parents, we forced a bit of hydrogen peroxide down his throat and he quickly threw up the rat poison. Thank God. We enjoyed many years with him afterwards. I think LCK's what you'd call an accidental genius, in that he doesn't think of himself as a genius, and we don't until we start to absorb the depth of his brilliance - and I think you have to have a certain level of intelligence and world view to appreciate his brilliance. "Funny" doesn't really do him justice - he transcends funny. He's got this mind that is truly singular not just in the world of comedy but in understanding ourselves, the people around us, and what it means to live an honest life.

Here's the thing: There's a chemical in chocolate (I forget the name) which is poisonous to dogs, and to cats, and in fact is poisonous to humans, except you'd have to eat an insane amount to get a fatal dose. The amount of this chemical depends a lot on the type of chocolate; since it's usually "cut" with sugar and stuff, it's usually not dangerous. Dark chocolate is worse, but things like baking chocolate or cocoa have a much higher concentration. Since dogs come in all sorts of different sizes, what would be a safe amount for one dog could be fatal to another. It's very hard to tell. And even if you give your dog just a little bit of chocolate, what dog ever settled for a *little bit* of anything, once they got a taste? So even though it would probably be OK if your dog ate some chocolate, it's best not to let them have any at all. Otherwise you run the risk of coming home one day to find Mr. Winkle stiff on the kitchen floor after having broken into the baking chocolate.

Actually, it's not the chocolate that's causing the death of dogs when they eat it. The % of cocoa does not matter. Almost all chocolate that we eat contains Theobromine. Theobromine is what kills the dog - Wikipedia has a great page about it.

I have 4 dogs currently and all of them have in one way or another have gotten their share of chocolate through it being knocked on the floor, guests leaving it out, garbage digging, cat knocking it off the counter. None of my 9 lb to 22 lb dogs have had any terrible side effects other than feeling poopy the next day, low energy, groggy, tired. They probably get a hang over from it. So yes chocolate has some ill effects to dogs, but not in the degree some people think. Milk chocolate is fairly harmless, but dark seems to be the key player in poisoning a dog.

It really depends on the dog. Grapes are supposedly poisonous to dogs either. I always thought that's a hoax, since my dog ate an immense amount of grapes during her life for many years. But supposedly, it's really dangerous. I guess it seems like it's more of an allergy?

Ryowyn Nobody has figured out what the actual chemical is that they can't have, but they can't eat grapes or raisins because it can cause them to have kidney failure. I think they build up in the dog's stomach and they can't digest them, but I don't know if that part is true or not. Also, your dog is not guaranteed to show symptoms after eating grapes or raisins there is only a chance that his/her kidney's will fail. Don't test it out though lol.

Matthew McGivern Thats what I have understood as well. Garlic too I believe. Such odd food items. For me as a person I get migraines from grapes. The nitrates build up and cause a reaction, not always, but very likely. Luckily they are not triggers for death or poisoning like our furry friends.

My dog ate Hydrogen Peroxide so to counterbalance the effect and bring it back to normal I gave it 2 bars of dark chocolate. Strangely enough it died, and I blame Louis CK for spreading misinformation
