Just to add my thoughts & that you have a better Louis Johnson sound than I've bothered to search for & I'm going to swap my set of flatwoods I've had sitting around for the last couple of years... It sure as hell sounds like flatwounds or has the bass cover been put through some Laptop or Pc Program of sounds that can help reproduce a particular & specific sound!.. All The Best .....

It sounds like your playing with flatwounds , as I personally always thought that Louis sound wasn't as bright & punchy on other MusicMan Stingray Bass Guitar but I could be wrong... A Compression Pedal is good for pulling back on those very bright sounds the Stingray is known for but I can't remember IF he definitely only played on Stingrays , as it could've been an MusicMan Sabre Bass Guitar but without going over it all too much I think Louis used something to get his own sound & just cutting back on the treble wouldn't give the more bass sound the late great Louis Johnson could get & boy he sure as hell knocked the living sh*t out of his bass guitars... But now I think about it maybe Louis did what James Jamerson did when he bought , I think the only new strings he bought once , & played those flatwounds until they were as dead sounding as the master James Jamerson got on his Fender Precision Bass Guitar... Any suggestions anyone?! As I could type in flatwound with treble off & other various ways of playing his Stingray but that'd soon get old so a heads up on what this also genuine master of his bass guitar Louis Johnson got on his bass guitar would be appreciated , as already I'm thinking flatwounds/about 2 on Treble & a Compression Pedal used to dial in a sound he was looking fir or was it something a lot more simpler!.. You All Have A Great Weekend Where Ever You May Be In This World & that you continue to stay safe & healthy as we all try to deal with this coronavirus on a daily basis... .....

@@griffintaylorr You know what! Your absolutely correct & though not an excuse but a fact , i only have the small rectangular box that enables me to type in response to comments or post my own but after about 4 paragraphs on here & typing in my ongoing comment , i cant see when my auto correct is playing up & since ive always searched out any information on a Jazz Bass Guitar my phones keyboard OS automatically picks Jazz , as that was the popular bass guitar to me & Yes i know the Precision had & still has a place with regards to , even , playing today but my go to bass guitar at first was always the Fender Jazz Bass Guitar... But as the decades went by it would've been foolish of me to keep sticking with 1 bass guitar , as i had such an amazing choice of New Brands of Independent & Mass Produced Bass Guitars that emerged , almost akin to a perfect storm , for the new up & coming bassists who wanted a lot more than what the Fender Precision or Jazz Bass Guitars were churning out & not that msny American built bass guitars were still as popular as they used to be & , again , not my words but thr words of so many bass players who , respectively , had tired of the P&J basic sounds & literally demanded more from those who were willing to add all sorts of innovations & in built pre-amps , basically what was still technically still usable as an instrument with the Fender Precision & the Fender Jazz Bass Guitars had all but had their day by the end of the 70s Though they could still deliver on the sounf front , it was that very front that saw these new youngs want something else & as much as they grew up listening to bass lines on the Fender P&J , well simply put " That wasnt good enough anymore. " The start of the 80s , IF i havent already stated it , was a Perfect Storm as far as to being a bass player & hence why over those 10 years we were constantly given bass guitars that could create all various sounds... Not only that but so many of these New Brand Bass Guitars went on to have their very own distinctive sound that once you heard the sound from certain bass players in bands , you automatically knew what Band & who the bass player was... I didnt pick up a bass guitar until 1995 , as i have into a friend who constantly bugged me about swapping to bass guitar & lets face it i was no Ginger Baker/Tony Thompson or any of the greatest drummers but then again i was happy just to play the drums for fun because for many once they got a Record Company to sign them up to a contract , it didnt take that long to see that what was played for fun soon became a job & that puts off a lot of musicians who want to sign on the dotted line but they didnt relish the fact that a Record Company & Manager(s) were now going to tell such solo acts & bands what they should do & at times it yielded quite a lot of revenue coming in for the the Record Company & the Manager was all thry were interested in... To give you a brief example would be IF you knew of the band " Wet Wet Wet " & after years of trying to get signed they finally got their deal but they had to take out the soul sound that was within their music & even their Debut Album " Popped In , Souled Out " was their open & pissed off play on words & that to get a chance at any success they had to basically sell themselves out & every solo act & band only makes money over a 3 yesr period as over that time they have to have at least tried to pay back the money the Record Companies put out up front to pay for Studio & Recording of Albums & this 3 year period is very similar to new or independent store owners , as it take about that amount of years to finally see that they are turning a profit & not just that but Their Profit & the Music Industry is or was the same but if coures there were Managers , who unbeknownst to the Record Company eere ripping off so many solo acts & bands... Hence why many bands now tried to sing the way they wanted to sound like how they truly wanted to sound like , but the fans wouldnt allow this & this meant hanging in there makung hit after hit album until they could self fund the Studio & Recording Time within said Studio in the hope that what they originally wanted to sound & write songs in the way they wanted to from the beginning but that album " Popped In , Souled Out " was a great play on words but by the time they could their lead singer had a severe drug habit that needed paying on a regular basis & other members in the band just lost out in how they had set out to sound like... Enough of that & I'll mend my error with regards to a Jazz to a Precious Bass Guitar but if i only fix 1 thats my fault as im about to fall asleep & i can checked it properly when not ready to nod off... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

They sound like roundwound strings to me. Either they're older strings that lost their "snap", or he's got the tone or treble control on the bass backed off.

Didn't really matter... it's not about the isolated track, which wasn't meant to be heard. It's about how it sat in the mix. Period. Leland Sklar made a great point about this. While many strive for a clean, pretty sound this cuts through in the mix better. Live and recorded. One of the funniest comments ever was on an isolated Chris Squire track. The listener clearly didn't get it. He wondered if Chris could play more cleanly.
@RJRKM

@@Brad5161 it wasn’t a criticism, but merely an observation. Yes it’s true, they are not supposed to be heard isolated. Yes I’ve heard McCartney, Chris Squire, Chuck Rainy, basslines isolated. And while they’re wonderful to hear and learn from, you have to cut them a bit of slack. I just hope they don’t start isolating. Some of the bass lines that I recorded in the 70s. It might be a little embarrassing

@@RJRKM The great session bassist Marcus Miller once said during one of his clinics that if people could hear a lot of the bass guitar lines from their favorite records isolated, they would hear all kinds of anomalies: Timing discrepancies, instrument hum/buzz, fret noise, intonation issues, etc. To @Brad5161's point, Marcus said that it ultimately came down to how the producers wanted the bass guitar to sound in the mix. TBH I'm surprised at how gritty Louis' tone is on this track. Sounds like he might've been running his bass through one of those Ampeg B15's, a common studio workhorse.
