Louis Removes Nestling from Nest, June 23, 2017

I am actually glad to see this. It closes the dramatic ending to the 2017 nesting season and opens up a brand new chapter for Iris and Louis. A heart-breaking, but necessary move.

So interesting how he first picks the chick up in his beak, drops it and then finally grips it in his talons. Such an honor to witness these beautiful birds in action. Also, heartbreakingly sad the chicks perished, I can only hope that nature wins out in the future. This live cam has been my favorite of all time.

What touched me was his gentleness and concern for his chick. He skirted around it so very carefully and gingerly. Even when he did latch onto it, it wasn't a death grip - it was a gentle lifting. I bet this will keep some of the intruders at bay - they have been known to eat chicks from what I've read. Sad for the family that had so much going for it this year. At least the pair seems to still be bonded, so this is a Good Thing. Get back to full strength for their winter journeys and come back fresh for next season. The weather has been so wacky all over the place.

This is really traumatic to watch ... Both Iris and Louis took some time off away from the nest ... happy to see them bond again ... I hope next year will be a good one

It is so heartbreaking. I can see his sorrow...:( I was so thrilled His hesitated and shook his head so many times before lifting his baby. It looks like trying to hide his sorrow. Although it is definitely not precise to interpret animals' behavior through human's perspective and emotion, I did see the humanity on Louis.

Could see how difficult this was for Louis but seemed necessary to get Iris back on the nest. Did he remove the other chick that was in the left side of the nest also?

I wonder where he took the nestling? Where do O's and other birds take their deceased chicks? I know some just make it part of the nest structure and others just drop it over the side.

Tough to watch, it's almost as if Louis gives us a chance to say 'goodbye' to the baby. At 2:47 to 3:04 he looks right at the camera before taking flight.....

The river where Louis fished was in flood, the water was muddy and he couldn't catch enough fish for the nestlings. They died of starvation.
