Hubig's has many flavors. They had been a New Orleans favorite for almost 100 years. Almost 10 years ago, their factory burned to the ground. They were seemingly lost forever, until two years ago. They were finally able to get into a new factory and start making their famous pies again. Returning with 2 flavors (apple and lemon) they've been adding flavors as they re-master their recipes. Currently they have apple, lemon, peach, pineapple, coconut, and chocolate. Still to come... banana, cherry, blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and my favorite sweet potato.

Emmy, You mentioned the cereal straws tasting like soap. This is a common problem at Dollar General/Dollar Tree for me. My theory is that some food products are either boxed or stored in or near laundry/cleaning products and the fragrance molecules they use leach onto some of the food. I'm so happy whenever I see Zapps chips anywhere. They're the best, and have been the best since long before big companies like Lays were making kettle chips. Interestingly, I can often find them in Dollar Trees out of state! I live in Oregon now and all the Dollar Trees here have a couple of flavors. Voodoo flavor, Creole Sweet Onion, Gator Tator and Cinnamon Sweet Potato are some of my favorites, but just the original flavor is excellent. It's just a dang good chip with a lot of potato flavor. Golden Flake used to sell their potato chips in big metal tins. We had stacks and stacks of them. Oh man the little packs of Camelia beans - my mom's pantry is always full of them.

I too am glad you visited - and loved - Louisiana! We have the best food, even if I do say so myself! It is a great place with warm, beautiful people, delicious food, and beautiful country. As a lover of hot sauces, I am glad you did a little bit of a taste comparison. Of those two, the Louisiana Hot Sauce brand is a favorite of mine - and get this: they are now making a Garlic flavored one and it is my new must have. Love Crystal too and use it frequently. Also, as you mentioned, Tabasco is our native, has several flavors available, and is the world's leading hot sauce. I am not a huge Praline fan, but you got a good mix of them; and yes, they are generally very sweet. We really love our Zapp's chips too! But Red Beans & Rice; it is a staple of ours. It is the only beans & rice combo that I eat, but I just love them. And yes, we have to have the sausage in there or it is not complete! Camellia's is our brand and it is the one served in most homes and eateries. Fund Fact: Red Beans & Rice are generally sold on Mondays in New Orleans (but other days too) as it stem from hundreds of years back when people would do their washing on Mondays and they could have the beans cooking on the stove while they were busy. Come back to LA anytime and visit others areas while here. All the best~

Even people who took French can’t pronounce most of the names in Louisiana. The pronunciation of the city where Crystal is made is “met uh ree”. We have Chee Wees made in New Orleans which are like the Cheetos and they have several different flavors like sour cream and onion. I have never seen anyone microwave a Hubig’s pie and those premade pralines are nothing compared to homemade. You should have picked up some Tony Chacherie’s (pronounced sash uh rees). It is amazing on most things. And typically anything from Zataran’s is pretty good. The food in New Orleans is good but to taste the true Cajun food you need to go further south towards Houma because there is a distinction between Cajun and Creole food. I would suggest October 18-20 to attend the Rougarou Fest. And while festival food is good here getting invited to someone’s house is the best way to experience the food and we have no problem inviting people to eat with us. Sorry, this got away from me.
@jessguscott47749 ай бұрын
The praline you bought fascinated me, as praline here in the UK and Europe tends to be very crunchy. As far as i know it is a simple sugar caramel (water and sugar) cooked until light to medium dark and poured over nuts, typically hazelnuts, almonds or peanuts. The texture of yours reminded me of Scottish tablet made as a child.

Oh Emmy, ex Marylander here when you talked about Old Bay seasoning you said it was to flavor your crab boil any Marylander hearing you probably had their brain scream Noooo you need to steam your crabs not ruin them by boiling then. In Maryland we put the liquid for steaming (often contains beer and or vinegar) below the crabs which are elevated in the pot and added in layers with liberal amounts of salt and Old Bay or their favorite proprietary seasoning blends from places that steam crabs. If you've never had steamed crabs I highly suggest that you do because steamed crabs, and shrimp, are highly superior in flavor and texture to boiled. Marylanders forgive Emmy for talking about boiling crabs with Old Bay, I have.❤
