Hard to overcome moisture in a set. I thought I was the only one that would give something 10 or more tries. The last time I wore myself out trying for an ember was when I had a house dried poplar set that I easily made 3 embers from...Left it on my covered porch just overnight and the next morning, I wore myself out trying to get it to produce another ember. It would not... I didn't know about thick pine bark being good for a bearing block. Thanks!

I am new to bushcraft and I fell upon your channel around March 2020..I became an instant subscriber..One important thing (that I quickly noticed) was you must hone your skills with practice, practice, practice, and practice some more..Then, you must continue to utilize your developed skills just to maintain them..I respect your characteristics to the fullest..Thanks for ALL your content and I have obtained quality knowledge from you in just a few weeks..I appreciate you!!

Which was the problem, the spindal, or the fire board? I see it had punk but not staying together. I live in Lousiana and always have trouble with friction fire till i saw you use a peice of palm tree, and williow in one of your videos. So i cant wait to give that a go. Thanks in advance!

That's a sweet little area you found, nice that it had some trails. Ugh...i so need to get out there, soon my friend ! Tip for the bowdrill. First off, a Nobel effort indeed. Second, try saving the burnt dust that didnt turn in to coal. Save it and make a mound of it right in front of your notch as if it accumulated there by its self. The dust will have a much lower combustion rate at this point and usually turns to coal pretty fast.

I have don that in the past, Where I am from it doesn't matter, I will try it here. usually I dump it in the tinder bundle. I just wanted an ember not a fire.

Welcome to the great state of La. I'm from B.R. And it's always very humid, middle of the summer is brutal you just pour sweat because the air is filled with humidity and doesn't dry your sweat off your skin , so you don't cool off your body just pours more sweat to try to cool itself, watched a lot off fire making videos of the bow and drill method where they are up north and out west and they make it look easy getting a coal quickly but around here in south Louisiana it's a tad bit more challenging, let's not talk about the insects and them no good son of a b***hing mosquitoes

That looks like the same pine we had in South Georgia. It wasn’t you I think, it was the wood. At least if it’s the kind of pine I’m thinking about. To sappy. Makes good fat lighter though if you can find a dead root. I have to say I never thought about using the bark as a bearing block. I always used a hunk of fat lighter.

Kind of hate to admit I'm the 850th like 6 years later...lol. Back when this was a new video I probably would have passed up after watching, and after following you more recently for the past year or so (2019/20) I just kind of giggle at how bad this video is currently...lol. Glad you got your YT and video game up. Not sure why YT is sending me into the way back machine on some of the folks I subscribe to, but it's a fun journey.

Beaver chewed stumps now give me the shivers. A local trapper was killed by a beaver a couple years ago. I was checking his trapline and started hauling on the chain on a triggered set. Beaver was still alive and got him in the femoral with those teeth. Bled out right there on the spot....
