Lou, sitting at my Study desk in Hertfordshire UK, I have learnt so many things from your 308 story. If you can't fix it, you make it. You're a really talented engineer. Humorous, entertaining and knowledgeable, we are following your story, not the car so fix it anyway you feel you must. Keep them coming, have missed them, they are obviously bringing pleasure to a lot of people.

Lou mate ignore the trolls and haters, they have nothing better to do than wind good people like yourself up! Besides, you have fellow 308 owners coming to you now to fix their problems and that speaks for itself! Keep on plugging away when you get any spare time, which it sounds like you don’t have much. Put a wrench in Terry’s hand and ask him if he’ll come out of retirement for a week or two. You know he wants to get his hands dirty!

Hey Lou, I'm lucky I stumbled onto your channel. You are a character ( in a good way) straight from central casting...You're quick witted and likeable. You're also a talented mechanic and can improvise to achieve a successful result. Your 308 isn't going to Pebble Beach but in everyday-world it'll be a stunner! The nay sayers are jealous...plain and simple. You've got your own shop and your 308 build is a dream project...people are jealous. Fuck em... While it really does help to "know the car".. what is way more important is general expertise, and an aptitude. Your years of experience would let you tackle the problems on any classic car, and Ferrari is no different. Modern cars and some computerized systems being the exception which sometimes do require the specific tools & training...

An excellent video showing your knowledgeable and thorough approach to solving the numerous issues on a customer's 308. It's very sad to see a Ferrari 308 that has been afflicted by 'maintenance induced failures' courtesy of incompetant mechanics - and/or 'work done on the cheap'. Look forward to future videos of your Ferrari - when you can aford the time - as I understand competent mechanics are becoming a rare species in developed countries - including Australia.

Thanks, this was great -- I have to do the shift shaft seals on my 328. I have read up and looked at lots of pictures, but this is the first video I have seen and it's super helpful. I have been told (by a Ferrari expert...) that it can be done without removing the engine oil pan, which also avoids having to fuss with the dipstick tube. Apparently it's possible to stuff the new rear seal in through the transmission side, using the shift shaft (poking in from the front) to act like an extra finger to help settle the seal into place and block it from falling through into the engine oil pan. Will give it a go but am prepared to remove the oil pan if needed. I plan to use Ferrari seals, which did OK on my 328 for the first ~30 years. There are aftermarket seals with more advanced design, but I have heard mixed opinions on them, especially about how they affect shifter feel. By the way, it's my non-expert opinion that it's normal for these engines to leak oil. Ferrari has some gasket and seal designs that range from iffy to hopeless. I mean, what nutjob engineer thought it made sense to run the shift shaft through the engine oil pan on the way to transmission?? There are stories about brand new 308/328 cars leaking back in the day, and I have heard about newly replaced gaskets and seals leaking soon after the job was done. On top of that, the aluminum used for the castings is porous, so it will sweat some amount of oil anyhow.

While I’m sure it can be done taking the Oil pan down is not that big of a deal.

After everything that you have figured out how to do with your car, you are much more of practical Ferrari mechanic than many of the techs working at the dealerships. There are very few people that I would consider Ferrari "experts." None of them are cheap, very few are what one would call "friendly," and all of them are so booked solid, a new customer's car would be outlawed by the eco-nazi governments before it would get worked on. You can bill this owner for a diagnosis charge, which you filmed all the way through, all of your work is documented, and the car is far better off than when it was pushed into the garage. I guaranty you, this guy will be back to have you keep his 308 roadworthy for as long as gasoline is available. Let the P.I.T.A.'s take their pot shots. If I had a 308, and lived in Canada, I would trust you with my car, too.

When I was fixing my 308 there was no on-line anything so only I knew if I screwed something up. But as 308 technology was equivalent to at most a pair of Morris Minors things weren't too hard to diagnose. Most electrical gremlins were due to rubbish Ferrari wiring and rusty earths. 4:15 boom goes the dynamite. I had that happen to me as a young gaffer....car died, oh you need a starter, oh you need this, oh you blew the solenoid.....no, turns out I just needed a wrench lol Learned to check that the first thing from now on. My 2004 F150 no crank no start. FIRST thing, open the hood wiggle the battery cables. 2nd thing, check the fuse box. Still nothing, and that was when my neighbour's mech son pulled up, runs a jumper to the starter "dead starter" so you ran a jumper to the + on the starter to see if it would spin by passing all the electronics? yup. "adds that to my check list next time". You the man lou!! How embarrassing tho for the owner "you mean all I had to do was check the battery cables"? (hangs head in shame lol)

I'm just a "home mechanic", but I've been at it for 30 years or so. The number of times I've taken a car to a professional and gotten massively subpar work in return is... well, most times I've taken a car to a professional. And I try to find good, quality shops and am willing to pay for it. Dunno. I do feel sorry for you trying to find a good senior tech.

If a car won't start I was always taught that the first thing to check was the battery condition and terminal connections, ( and then make sure there is fuel in the tank and don't always believe the gauge! 😜) such a simple and easy fix , I mean you got to it right away and got the car started, a silly little problem easily solved, I just wonder why the owner of the car didn't take a spanner and just make sure the connections were good, at least he could have driven the car to the shop instead of having it towed! I mean I'd be embarrassed if I was the owner of that car!!

I was Embarrassed because, I did check the battery connections. I just didn't have tools with me, so did the best by hand. Turns out I Hand tightened the nuts, but didn't have the strength to crimp clamps tight enough by hand./ When Lou told me what it was, I told him I was Embarrassed! So there I confess.😓

15:49 I can't help but think "whose bright idea was it to run the shifter cable THROUGH the crankcase"? lol. I wonder, is the engine oil the same as the trans? That seal between the two would be prone to leak as well and have fluid transfer.

@@LouTrottier I figured as much. The seal between the two is highly critical then. I'm kind of surprised they didn't put one on each side, the trans and the crankcase.

Are the naysayers saying you’re not doing it authentically in the sense of being historically accurate compared to how it left the factory? Or they’re literally saying the work itself is low quality. I hope the former. As a lifetime car enthusiast and shade tree mechanic who also worked on super high end bicycles in bike shops for years, which are loaded with very delicate and very expensive components made of all kinds of exotic materials, your work seems pretty darned conscientious to me. I hope the experts are just saying that like any car, there are tricks and little details that you pick up on after you do enough of them.

When I bought my Mondial 3.2 (same drivetrain), it had just had the shift seals replaced by a Ferrari shop. One issue I had was that sometimes you'd put the gear lever in reverse but the car was still in neutral. Had to remove the sump plate and all those detent springs and balls and readjust the pinch bolt on the shifter fork like Lou did. So that shop hadn't bothered to check the adjustment before putting it back together. That would have been the time to do it right.

That car has K jetronic injection. One thing that I noticed that no one does, (maybe it is done on that car) is to replace the fuel filter in the input of the fuel main distributor. It is a very small filter, that looks like a screw. That has made an enormous difference when I changed mine because the car still had the original. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWHZmXyjh8lgrJY&pp=ygUpdGhlIGFsd2F5cyBmb3Jnb3R0ZW4gZmlsdGVyIGluIGsgamV0cm9uaWM%3D
