A note! I know there are books and comics set in this world, but I specifically wanted to highlight books outside of ATLA :)

Elliot will definitely read the comics after she's finished with the show ;)

I highly recommend "Frieren: beyond journey's end'. It follows an elf girl with a long lifespan after her party defeats the dark lord. The absolutely best anime of the year and one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

I love how many times you bring up FFX. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

Sword of Kaigen is one that I've been thinking I might check out. I know very little about it, but I've heard it recommended a bunch. You had me at waterbender

Percy Jackson is also a solid recommendation for water bender lovers specifically 😅

Great list, and love the Appa shirt! Our stories are pretty similar when it comes to Avatar. I didn't watch it as a kid either (on purpose because I was worried I'd get picked on about it at school, since I already was picked on for liking other nerdy/geeky things). When I first sat down at watched the series from start to finish, I was 20 (roughly 11 years ago) and didn't know any spoilers going in either. I ended up being blown away by the show and became a full-fledged fan. I also read Mistborn Era 1 last year, and Allomancy definitely reminds me of metalbending (and I see Vin as something of a combination of a few of the younger characters in that show lol).

What about Children of Blood and Bone?! Zuko and Inan’s characters, journeying with siblings, the hero’s/heroine’s journeys, so many similarities. I actually watched ATLA as an adult (loved it!) after my friend and I read the book a few years ago because my friends suggested it to me, saying how it was so similar to children of blood and bones story.

You should check out the show Owl House. It’s quite different from ATLA in a lot of ways but it is similar in that it’s also a kids show that tackles some pretty heavy themes. And it has amazing characters with really good development.

Shadow of the fox trilogy is pretty similar in terms of the character dynamics...that found family element.

This was such a good list of recs! Definitely going to pick up Vagabonds here soon. High key agree with the Scar/Zuko comparison. It's so interesting to think about how different they're situations are but how well those particular themes are explored through both of them.

Thanks for the great video - and for the recent Witch Hat Atelier recommendation (not really like ATLA but I think fans of one would like the other) - I'm already up to Volume 6 and I'm loving it so far!

If you love ATLA, I recommend The Warriors of Bhrea. Book 5 (and the final book) comes out in September. It's in another world, different people control different elements, the MC has rare magic, and the mentor in book 1 gives me serious Toph vibes.

I feel like I could argue that Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner (second book in the Godkiller trilogy) can be recommended to Avatar the Last Airbender fans. I won't spoil it since you've mentioned in previous videos you haven't read it yet, but just wanted to throw that out there for those who did read it :)

The main difference about Jinx and Azula is that Azula had NOBODY that cared for her, not even her horrible mother would even bat an eyelid if anything happened to her. At least Jinx has Vi :______)

It’s a middle grade series but The Seventh Tower series by Garth Nix always have me avatar vibes. I think the IP is owned by Lucas Books/film ie. Disney so I really hope one day someone decides to do something with. Animated with Avatar as the guide would be so good. I can’t really give any specific ties to Avatar but it released not long before avatar, I had read it multiple times before seeing Avatar and always paired them in my head.

That has turned a bit of a black sheep in the Avatar loving community. It's not as fun and light as the original series, so the tonal change and environment change gave people whiplash.
