So while it started out that way, it didn't end that way. Obviously it's a Rom-Com, so all the conflict was fixed quite easily and quickly, but still.

Liked the movie and also thought the altered lyrics were clever - and a good option for those who read something never intended in the original lyrics. As another poster mentioned the original lyrics were based on the societal expectations back then that the girl should not spend the night with a guy she liked but wasn't married to. She wants to stay and he does too and the song is about them coming up with reasons for her to stay a while longer. It's that simple. It had nothing do with consent, harassment or potential rape. Frankly, the woman was acting more liberated than most women of that era by even considering defying the current societal norms. Sad that some people today find issues that aren't even there.

If you have ever been a people pleaser and had someone not accept your no…. Or even spike your drink, you’d get it. The original chorus has her saying her mom will worry, her ear will worry, she’s concerned about neighbor’s opinions and she was given a drink with implied alcohol or who knows what else in it. The whole time, the man doesn’t accept or acknowledge any of her very good reasons. Could you imagine someone saying their mom would worry and you completely ignoring that or acting like it’s no big delay. Respect and consent is not having to say no indirectly over and over and over again. I truly think if someone doesn’t have a problem with the lyrics, they should carefully consider it.

Partners need to hear them and take them seriously, as they learn this skill. And if your reasons are valid to you, that’s enough. It's just a change in lyrics on his part from the song baby it's cold outside, where instead the guy is actually trying to make her stay, which is why she said it's sexual harrass-y. Listen when Dean Martin and Martina McBride sing it, or Sammy Davis, and you can get a better feel for the lyrics as written by Loesser.
