Deadhead is in my top 5 favorite songs. I have NEVER heard somebody combine that level of harsh vocals with melody, much less with the ridiculous amount of range he has. There's a fan recording of another show where you can just see the emotional exhaustion come over him when he goes back into the cleans in the last verse. That could obviously be me just reading into it, but I don't know how he can perform this every night without bringing a therapist with him. lol The only other song that gives me a similar vibe is Digital Bath by the Deftones., but I'm probably alone on that front.

I absolutely love the intensity of this performance. Glad you got to it! No need to apologize for the tangents! One of the joys of watching reaction videos is that we get to hear what our favorite music brings out of people. Everyone gleans something unique from their lives, and sharing in those things is a blessing. If we don't like it, we can always skip ahead. And I can relate on the hermit front. The world is going through a lot of rapid change right now, and I think people are more stressed than they sometimes realize. I've found some solace in garden design as well. Though I only have an apartment balcony to work with at the moment, I've been studying up on ecological gardening. Permaculture and the like. To anyone considering it, let this be a gentle nudge to give plants a shot. Helping some little plant friends to sprout can bring more love into a numb heart than you may expect. Just be forgiving with yourself. Mistakes will happen. This is a great community. Keep preaching the love, Cosmic. We appreciate you.

6.66k subscribers ? Just for a moment, and then it's gone. Like noticing your odometer is giving you the bat's hello ( 01134 ). oh well yeah, Devin... damn, what a mind. He is an absolute genius with reverb and repeats; the poetry of what is said and what is left between the lines. And his tuning (open C) makes for some sonic layering that is hard to do with a more 'normal' tuning. But that is just a technical tidbit, a trinket, a petty observation on my part. I love that you used the word 'atmosphere'. The man knows how to let the music breathe, which is often slow and languorous. For me, it allows my pedestrian brain the time to absorb his lyrics during the song... you don't have to reflect on a Devin Townsend song. He gives the listener enough time and space to experience it fully as it's being played. ... I think that's a thing. Maybe not? ... could be wrong, often am, often am.

Im so glad to see someone finding Dev for pretty much the first time. If you're going into the Devin rabbit hole, I would suggest the Ocean Machine album livestream he did a couple years ago. He did livestreams during the pandemic. The Ocean Machine stream is probably my fave. Bring up the lyrics to Funeral before you do this. So you'll understand what happens. He wrote it about one of his friend's brother who passed away. He has lots of heavy stuff but he's mellowed out a lot. Devin is one on his own.. Off the back of his own solo efforts he originally found his feet on the main stage with Steve Vai back in 1993, fronting the band for Vai's album "Sex & Religion" ("Deep Down Into the Pain" can be found out there.. the first song promotion from the album), follow up to the acclaimed "Passion & Warfare". Post Vai he emerged with what I'd define as some form of dark industrial metal with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, an outfit I strongly recommend - you might begin with material from the first two albums "Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing" and "City" ("Detox" from the latter album is I feel a particular cult classic of this period). STRAPPING comprised himself, guitarist Jed Simon, bassist Byron Stroud and "atomic clock" drummer Gene Hoglan. They continued for another twelve years or so with some overlap to Devin's solo work, which would initially feature the members of STRAPPING before he broadened to bring new musicians into the fold. From there a couple of incarnations have appeared working his material forwards.. This band here is one of the longer lasting incarnations to date, but he's moved on since that. He's something of a chameleon in his creative moods and you get broad strokes with his brush from the most delicate to the most vicious, but has a very definite and undeniable style. Nice guy.

Thank you so much for these reactions! Can't wait to listen to more Devin with you here. As others have said, there's little that Devin Townsend HASN'T done over the years. He's incredibly versatile, yet everything he creates shares his beautiful, powerful, and very personal sound. I found this live performance of Deadhead on KZbin a few years ago and it led me to jump down the rabbithole and become a huge fan of his. I truly feel like I listen to music differently since discovering him. There's just something about what he does musically that tickles my brain in just the right way - like it's exactly what I need to hear. There are so many of his live videos to be found here, but if you want to check out another one from this same concert, you gotta hear Bastard Live at Royal Albert Hall. It's another droney, somber, powerful one that blows me away every single time. Thanks again and I'll see you back here! :)
