As a Canadian it really bums me out that Devy isn’t a household name everywhere. The man has like 30 studio albums and has done everything from blues and country to singing for Steve Vai to Strapping Young Lad which is some of the most extreme shit you’ll ever hear.

I'm glad you've really opened up to this kind of stuff! I'm 28, and as a kid I had the elitist mentality where I thought I had the authority to say what metal can and can't be, and as I've gotten older I realized I was just ruining music for myself. Music should never be in stranglehold to be what the public wants it to be. Music should just be music, and Devin really embodies that. He's such a beautiful example of what music can really be.

Devin Townsend started his career at the age of his early twenties, when he was asked to do lead vocals on Steve Vai's album "Sex & Religion". After that, He founded Strapping Young Lad and was its primary songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist from 1994 to 2007. He has also had an extensive solo career and has released a total of 28 albums across all of his projects as of 2022. Devin is a hyper active, but so so nice dude. An entertainer, musician, composer, producer.... And his material vary from the aggression of Strapping..... to almost like "world music" of Casualties Of Cool project. And all of this by him is yet another rabbit hole

Devin is an artist that is totally worth doing a deep dive on. Partly because a lot of his albums are stylistically very different from each other. I highly recommend Deadhead live at Royal Albert Hall, Bastard live at Royal Albert Hall, Failure live at Plovdiv, and Stormbending. He actually has done two songs with Floor Jansen as well- Pandemic off of his album Deconstruction and Neurasthenia which was done by Floor's old band ReVamp. Side note: I saw Devin in concert a couple of weeks ago and seeing him live was an absolute joy.

So awesome your patreon hinted you towards Devy, my first concert after the lockdowns. I was quite uncomfortable during the three pre-bands and had to go outside a few times. Once Devy went on stage, my anxiousness was forgotten. Maybe because of his kitchen concerts during lockdown, maybe because he is so open about his mental health and does a lot for the community, or because he seems to be such an authentic dude. The Video to SPIRITS WILL COLLIDE and reading the comments to it usually lets me tear up in an uplifting way. Cheers from Germany 🤘

DEVIN IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWMAN IN METAL. Animated, funny, charismatic, theatrical.... you name it. He has an album called Ziltoid The Omniscient, about an alien from the planet Ziltoidia-9 in the 4th Dimension who comes to Earth in search of our universe's greatest cup of coffee. However, he is appalled by the taste of the particular coffee he is served, declaring it "fetid", and summons the Ziltoidian warlords to attack Earth, facing the full might of Earth's army. Declaring war on us because he was served shitty coffee.... IT'S SUCH A DEVY IDEA.

I saw him many times live and he never, ever disappoints. He is all over the place with his music, from very ethereal to very hard and raw. He did an amazing album with Anneke van Giersbergen called Addicted. I highly recommend. He calls her the Metal Tinkerbell and I'm sure you'll agree. Btw.. did you know that Devy and Floor collab on an album of his? Very heavy. I think its called "Deconstruction", and.. It's wild that the original version of this song was written by Devy not long after the release of the Strapping Young Lad album, City. His musical expression has always been wild, even if his non-SYL works were missed by a lot of people. You probably want to hear him live with an orchestra. One of his more recent tracks, Higher, was performed with a live orchestra in Plovdiv some years ago. It's on KZbin. The album the song is from has a lot of this sound, except even more rich. Maybe not his best work, but some cool arrangement worth checking out.

I love Devin Townsend's wall of sound and the fact that he's a goofball. Fun fact: The female voice you hear in the background is the same singer that was on the Amorphis song Amongst Stars, Anneke van Giersbergen. She also has done a ton of work with Ayreon, so you'll probably be hearing her again!

Anneke's best work by far was as the lead vocalist of The Gathering. 6 awesome albums, atmospheric doom metal (early) - trip-rock (later). Her solo stuff and her prog metal project VUUR (obviously inspired by Devin Townsend) are not quite at the same level. Devin was featured as a guest vocalist on a ReVamp song called "The Anatomy of a Nervous Breakdown: Neurasthenia".

Time to check out Dir En Grey. Probably the song "Vinushka" to start with. Their singer's vocal range actually tops Patton and Devin.

This might be my favorite reaction to this and I've seen a hundred at least. Subbed. I saw him with Vai for the sex and religion tour in St Louis. He had just turned 20. For my 50th birthday my wife got a cameo from Devin. Devin Townsend sang happy birthday to me. Best Gift Ever You really should check out Sex And Religion He puts on a vocal clinic. The entire album is a masterpiece. Ocean Machine Addicted Empath It's all so good. Greatest musician on earth. Edit: His live podcast shows during the lock downs are all also masterpieces.

What stands out to me about his vocals is the control he has over his placement and distortion.
