Many many times, we don’t realize the hidden microaggressions from our white partners/boyfriends until after breaking up, but looking back, they were all there. Why are Colleen & Cole, after apologizing, continuing to get berated by their partners? Colleen especially seemed genuinely sorry for hurting Matt. I feel like both Zae & Matt went into this with personal insecurities, and the smallest thing triggered them to respond so harshly. The pool conversation was slightly inappropriate but it could also been seen as a public, honest short hand discussion of flattery. To a secure person, they may even find that compliment of their partner as a reflection of themselves. Zae can’t have her self esteem shattered if she went in with very little to begin with. It also irks me to see her deny anything Cole says, if anything she should believe him, as he seems to be brutally honest in the past.

I totally get that, but I think part of the issues is a lack of adequate apologies. Dr. Honda frequently talks about what a good apology looks like and I don’t think either of them gave a good apology. Neither of them really validated the other persons feelings or worries. Another factor that is similar is when Dr. Honda talks about infidelity. While, yes, what both of them did wasn’t as serious as actually cheating I can image the hurt and distrust their partners feel from it is probably similar. That means it’s going to take lots of time to help rebuild trust (especially because they barely knew each other and had little foundation already). There are going to be times when the hurt gets re-triggered and it’s the responsibility of their partner to not get defensive, but validate and apologize again. Eventually it will get better, but one apology rarely ever “erases” all hurt.

Zanab is clearly very insecure. It's important to realize this dinner party is well after their return to Dallas. So many days and conversations removed from what happened at the pool in Los Angeles. You can tell from the things that Cole says that they have been over the pool thing more than once and he has had to repeatedly reassure her that she is the only one for him. But the first thing Zanab does at this party is seek out Matt to confirm if *Matt* is still angry about the pool conversation, because if he is, it will validate her still being mad. Of course, as the audience, we know that Matt and Zanab are the two most insecure people on the show, him specifically with the way his first marriage ended in cheating and being unceremoniously dumped. Zanab looking to Matt for validation is about the worst possible advice she could get, because he is clearly wrapped up in the same self-sabotaging behavior.

Colleen had fairly mild banter by the pool, while Cole continually brought up to Zay's face that he found Colleen hotter, and that Zanab isn't the "type" of girl he'd normally go for (which one could easily read as racial). This is all your fault. Colleen was freezing up and had no idea what to say to his ridiculously unjustified anger. Upset would have been fine, but what he exhibited was well past that. Matt talking to Zay wasn’t about helping - he’s trying to punish Cole too. He doesn’t like that Cole is better looking, and Zay is so primed to believe the worst about Cole she listens. I think Cole should dump her and Colleen needs to get far away from Matt - he is not suitable in any kind of relationship without serious counseling. Colleen deserves better than ALL of them. I feel so bad for her, she doesn’t deserve any of what Matt has put her thru. Have only seen clips on your show, but that’s definitely the way they all seem. I’m very concerned about Colleen.

I would have been frustrated too and I don't understand why Zanab went to Matt After discussing with Colleen. It felt to me like she was looking for trouble. But Matt told her things that she did not know about so I understand why she went to confront Cole again because Mr brutaly honest failed to disclose the whole conversation and apologized for things she did not know he said. I had a problem with the fact that Cole was so willing to pacify and validate Matt's feelings while acting frustrated with Zanab and reassuring her in an unreassuring way. To me it showed that he could be sensitive while talking like he was with Matt but did not use that quality when he talked to Zanab. However Zanab does not make it easy for him either because she is not listening or believing what he says and is dismissive. So in another word they both are terrible at communicating efficiently to each other.

I dunno. I just think if we are asking men to be accountable for what they do then we should at least be accountable to what we say. If she really loves honesty then she needs to be prepared for honestly that she doesn't like. It shouldn't be Cole's responsibility to get out the code book to interpret what she really means by her words. Say what you mean. If you want someone to make you feel like a "10" then say that, but don't ask and then expect him to come up with the "right'" answer even if it's not the true answer. She wasn't being sarcastic. What she wanted was for him to say "you're a 10 to me" and that's not the man he is...or at least that's not the man he was after meeting her for 1 day. You have to be into each other, so there is a sense of reciprocity. This doesn't mean you're totally oblivious to other people, but there is a limit to this that Cole crossed (by engaging Colleen in the conversation, flirtatiously telling her that he was attracted to her and that he'd gone for her, had they met in real life). Zanab just needs that much self-esteem to be able to say - listen, there's no one else I'm attracted to but you, and I don't feel comfortable being in a relationship where I'm not getting this reciprocated. But as Dr. Honda said, who knows what the contract stipulates. They need at least 10 juicy episodes per season.

I've had partners, friends, coworkers claiming that they were just expressing disagreeing with something I said or did, but actually STATING that I had a malicious intent with something, BECAUSE they felt hurt. That's not how it works though, when you are able to have a proper theory of mind. So when I in response would express that I felt sorry that they were hurt, but that I didn't intend to at all because 'My logic was [...]' or 'I interpreted that as [...]' or 'I didn't have that info so that's why my decision was [...]' it absolutely didn't suffice. They wanted me to admit knowing that I hurt them, and hurting them anyway. Well.... no, of course I did not have the intention of hurting someone. Which a lot of people equal to 'She doesn't care that I'm hurt.' Not true, I do care. But I don't feel that I should admit to having malicious intentions when I didn't. In fact, it is weird even getting on Cole's case for this when 1. Zanab herself didn't go on this show to find a non-white man, and 2. Cole never said he only wants to date white American women. Zanab does not seem to be happy with who she is, and it wouldn't surprise me if Cole only made that direct comment because of Zanab maybe accusing him of certain things.

Thank you DKH and Stacy for putting these up so quickly! I'm itching to hear all the way to the end. Sooo I actually don't totally agree that Zay is being reasonable here. Matt is being a bit of an instigator. I think Cole as Dr. H mentioned is fatigued from talking about this thing over and over again as he says. You see them actually get to a bit of a better place, they've talked about this extensively, he's apologized, he's reassured her, they've moved on. And one conversation with Matt and Zay is right back to that place. So I think Cole is trying to communicate in a frustrated way that he chooses and loves her. Zay is full of insecurities, I don't think there's anything Cole could've said in any way that she would've believed him.
@theveteransergeant2 жыл бұрын
The biggest red flag in this episode is that Zanab goes running straight to Matt to confirm whether or not he was still angry about the pool conversation. It means she's seeking validation for her feelings. She's looking for reasons to remain upset and confirmation for her insecurities. When she confirms Matt was upset, she then attacks Cole again over a conversation that was supposedly resolved, which explains why he is defensive and exasperated. The advice Dr Honda gives to Cole is to do things that he's likely already had to do more than once. 5:08. We watch him ask "Why do you not care?" "There is one girl in this whole thing for me" and "You and I were good." This is Cole saying "Why are we back at this pool conversation again?" Zanab, in return, just interrupts him over and over, trying to refocus the conversation to her original pain, and away from his attempts to rectify and reassure her. Zanab is a classic self-sabotager, and worse, she's gaslighting Cole at this point.

My take: First, this situation is so unique. Usually by this point in a relationship the guy knows who's he's dating and any attempts to call out another woman as hot would be a clear sign of pre-cheating. Or, if this was a first or second date with Zanab and he talked to another woman about how he would date her, blah blah, then it's clear disrespect. Either is a good cause to bounce and I would have. By the time of this party tho, they've talked about it over and over apparently so her bringing it up like it's a totally new situation doesn't help either of them. If it's something she can't get past then she needs to either break it off or find a way to work with him to get past it. But she's not talking TO him, not talking WITH him, she's talking AT him, and he's clearly trying to find a way to reach her. So Cole's not a hero but he's trying and she's not letting him in at all.

This is the scene she said was hidden by the producers to "protect" cole. 2. she is also a crazy b because after all this, she cant even self reflect and admit ONE fault? Instead she is not blaming the guy for causing her ED, accusing the guy of every single ism and phobia she could think of

Zay has some pretty intense insecurities and cognitive distortions but Cole doesn't seem to care and doesnt want to understand, he'd rather call names and label her bipolar

He was definitely way too honest with her in a way that was so disrespectful. BUT the reunion changed how I felt through the WHOLE show. Zanab did Cole so dirty instead of just leaving him. So disrespectful and mean dude.

When Cole said "I am more attracted to you than I am her now", one possible way that Zanab could be thinking is "Oh. So you like her at least a little bit".
@filmgirlLisa Жыл бұрын
Yeah or another way: "Oh. So you're more attracted NOW? Not when you told me you loved me?" Ugh. It's exhausting.

My theory is Zanab has Borderline Personality Disorder, based other trauma history of losing her parents at a young age- it would make sense and I am very sympathetic to her about that. I am also familiar with BPD because my sister has it and I know one thing they do is they will find things that elicit emotion from you and will use it to gain power and control over you and I noticed one thing that Cole gets excited about is the trips she promised in the pods and it makes me wonder if that is Cole's motivation for being with her...? I don't see true love on either side of this connection.

There must be something wrong with me, but when it comes for pronunciation of Colleens name and dr Honda say that Cole is saying ot wrong i just here him repeat it few times exactly the same way! :D where is the difference? Is it really subtle, that its easy to say wrong or Im just special person who is unable to hear it?

So excited and ready for Dr. Honda to *finally* realize Cole's type! and have him completely miss that "Lily" = "Blonde White Women" 🤦♀️

Before all the comment role on he rated Raven a 10. 1) Colorism exists. It's complicated. But while of African American descent Raven has highly westernized features especially pertaining to he body type. 2) He rated her a 10. But he never said he considered her his type or said he would ever date her. 3) Even Nancy described Raven as a "tall skinny blonde" when referencing Bartises type.

I don’t understand why you think Cole is the one constantly bring up Colleen though. It’s been pretty clear to me and many viewers that Zanab is the one who keeps bringing up the things that fuel her insecurities, not him. He keeps saying it the same way when she does, which is not ideal, sure, because they both keep focusing on comparisons. But Zanab is the one who keeps re-opening that wound. ESPECIALLY here. This whole conversation was following up after Zanab and Matt talked, and she went to Cole to talk about how upset she still is about the whold Colleen conversation AGAIN. We even watched Cole call that out, like “we’ve talked extensively about this already, why are we not past this?” Which feels like they’ve talked about it way more than he ever wanted to to begin with. He doesn’t WANT to keep talking about it but she brings it back up and then won’t accept anything he has to say. He keeps saying Not Exactly The Right Thing for her. I don’t think that’s wrong of him but it is a pretty clear indication that he can’t give her what she needs.

I think if this had been their first conversation/fight about this, then I would agree that Cole could end it by saying specific things, but this argument is about 1-2 weeks old. They already fought about it and Cole already tried to reassure Zay a bunch of times. At this point he is just tired of having each sentence he says either picked apart or flipped on its head. She reignited the fight because she found an excuse to pick another fight. She seems to be in a constant state of provocation, and then she pretends to be the mature one. Cole said some things he shouldnt have said, but he at least seemed to own up and deal with that. His attitude seemed to be either move past it or move on, but she just wanted a person to argue with so couldnt move past it or move on.

Ppl use this conversation to say that zanab lied when she said he didn’t apologize until they had diner 3 weeks later or something but like how could he have apologized the night after like he said if she just now found out about what he needed to apologize for? He was apologizing for being an asshole to her all those times he references here not for what he said.

I think Cole has ASD and just doesn't know what the appropriate response is. Which is why I watch Dr Honda, because I don't know either, and I thought what Cole said seemed fine until I heard DrH say he needed to apologize for saying something that seemed out of line at the time. I really need things spelled out for me in my personal life, and not intimated. This situation seems like it would be extremely distressing, and it seems like he held it together fairly well for the setting and the probable level of intoxication for this show.

Cole is making Colleen into his Mini-Me in the same was Bartise did with Raven, by trying to act like her mispronounced name makes her the female version of him.

It's so interesting that Dr. H missed what you do when you have a partner that cannot move on from a disagreement. I'm not sure if it's because he's fully into Zay's POV but I was interested in how to help partners move past an infraction or a misunderstanding and he never touched on that. When I first watched this I thought: this is why you have to be selective about who you let into your mental circle. Matt was being supportive but he revived a conflict that they had tried to move past and she really didn't get any new information that changed anything, so really it was just that it was never truly settled for her. There is really nothing Cole could say or do at this point to appease at this point so I would think she had to make the choice to either work to get past it or leave. And I would think as a therapist the goal would be to help her make that decision because the continual re-litigating something doesn't help either of them move forward.

Dr Honda keeps saying about Cole, "The way he kept bringing it up". This is completely factually false. In the episode where they are in bed having this same discussion, Zanab admits SHE is the one who asked him to rate her, then SHE continued to ask further questions (is there anyone else). In every instance ZANAB is the one who "brings it up". Cole, for his part, does not know when to stop sharing, nor does he have any filter or skillset to soften things. This is NOT to be mistaken with empathy. When he has been called out, in non fights, he has shown a willingness to 1) ask questions, empathize, and an attempt to make adjustments. There is a major distinction between "bringing it up" vs "sharing too much and delivering this info in a manner that accounts for feelings". This distinction is playing out in the fight." Dr Honda repeatedly attributes the initiation of the topic to Cole, while is not the truth. Zanab consistently introduces the topic into discussion. Cole could be better here in this fight scene. Cole should have never had that flirtatious conversation with Colleen. However, You can hear the results of the distinction laid out above. Cole states multiple times in this argument things like "we're right back in Malibu..."you and I have talked about this extensively". Zanab has had instant response to anything Cole states. Here, suddenly she has nothing to say. She doesn't deny it. "Catalog of Pain". There are exactly 2 things she catalogs and brings up (cuties has not happened yet, nor has she ever mentioned a single thing about body shaming). The Two things are: The Pool conversation and The Rating. In both "Catalog of Pain", Zanab is the person to bring the topic into discussion. SHE ADMITS THAT SHE ASKED TO BE RATED. Matt merely gave some detail that Zanab didn't know. She brings it up, again. Now, remember, there seems to be universal agreement that Cole overshares, and should know when to not give out too much information. So it would be hypocritical and inconsistent to admonish him for leaving some details unsaid. It's intriguing that Dr Honda brings up Nick and his exhaustion in dealing with Danielle. Yet is is clear, with Cole's demeanor and reaction, but mostly with his word choices that he is exhausted, yet Dr Honda is reluctant to commit to this connection. And here, it is not Cole merely being defensive, Cole is clearly stating we have had this conversation repeatedly. This is not even about the broader general criticism that Dr Honda speaks of, this is specific the exact topic/event. It is not Cole that is stuck, as he is NOT who initiates the same conversation. Cole could be better in terms of giving an apology. However, IF he has already apologized (I am not sure if one was given and shown, have to go back and see) I can see where somelike like Cole who has no filter and is "brutally honest", would not even think to apologize, again. At the least, it would be more helpful to state he has apologized, and perhaps ask something like "I am trying to be better, for you and us, is there anything Ive done since, or could do better now."

I think he didn't care he would've made a joke out of it, or walked off or not addressed it. I think she wasn't going to let him in. I can't imagine anything he should say that he didn't already say.
