This is horrific. It makes me reevaluate where I am “spending my money”, because people who consciously choose to play up drama are one thing, but exploiting those suffering from mental health diagnoses (who are known to not have concrete decision making skills) is exploitive and predatory.

I was on a food competition show on Food Network and I will say, a ton of it is where they do things to pull the dramatics out of you so you have a physical and visual reaction to be caught on camera. There were a ton of behind-the-scenes things going on that the audience didn't see and it was there to make the live taping extremely stressful (and I was baking food!!). Not nearly as bad as these love shows, but all reality tv is created to give the audience a performance.

Unfortunately we the viewers have to take some responsibility. We thrive on the drama. This LIB was the most popular and had the most villains. We’re encouraging them to cast more Jackies. I honestly believe production had a hand in encouraging Micah and Irana’s behaviour.

The no water thing is interesting to me, since I thought I saw some of the LIB contestants drinking water in the pods either when they were like working out or just chatting. But that is still crazy they aren't able to eat except on their schedule if they're filming so many hours.

I don't think the ethics are blurry, it's intentionally unethical, the thing is this mimics what professional entertainers experience as well, the entertainment industry will get away with what it can, no matter the venue/mode, that's why youtube/independent creators are so important.

I was on a food competition show back in the day... 😅 My first and probably only foray into the world of "reality TV". The talking heads segments were edited out of sequence and made me look like I didn't know the answer to a question the narrator was asking. Some of the reaction shots are also filmed multiple times, and producers were "guiding" some contestants how to vote. It was a long week, but at least I got some half decent food and some new kitchen utensils out of it. 😬

The wage / stipend commentary: it’s the very same thing for actors on film and tv in general and theatre. It’s why these and other creative industries can be so tough to work/sustain yourself in unless you are wealthy, heavily supported by friends/family financially or a big name: but even those big names at the beginning had to accept poverty wages and/or none for their work. Which is why if you don’t have outside financial patronage that lifts the burden from you to have to work and try and pursue art - it can drive folks to desperation, depression, etc.

Pressuring people (especially some people who clearly have drinking problems) to drink may be legal, but it's awful. These people should be being paid at least minimum wage for 24/7 jobs, and even more-so imo. Personally, I hope to god they figure out how to unionize or legislate. As a viewer I want the drama to be real, not to be because everyone is starving, drunk and exhausted.

I know you said you aren't trying to invalidate people's experiences and that the contracts are usually extensive and outline what participants should expect but these shows still operate unethically (not that you claimed they were ethical). Many have reported having food and water restricted but having plenty of alcohol available. That Nick and (whatever her name is) had to make friends so they could get food is not ok. That the shows exploit people's mental health is not ok. That these abusive practices are standard in the reality tv industry is not ok. Even though producers can't force the contestant to do something or act a certain way, we are neglecting the fact that these people are isolated. They have no phone, no books, no external entertainment, in some instances limited access to sunlight, few places to hide and be alone, etc. The producers are their only connection to the outside world. Worse, the producers are authority figures. Combine those two things, and people's emotional states and you have a recipe for manipulation. When the only feedback participants are getting is from producers, of course, they can easily be pressured and manipulated into doing things they wouldn't have done without these conditions. I am not absolving the participants of personal accountability but Netflix, Love Is Blind and their producers have all of the power in this situation, therefore the responsibility to act ethically rests primarily on their shoulders. I think this reality shows need to have an external ethics team on set the entire time that will evaluate what they are doing and how they are treating the participants. There need to be consequences when these shows step out of line. Reality TV is objectively fine, it's how it's run that is the problem and we shouldn't accept their abusive behavior as standard practice and a consequence of going on reality tv.

@@TheQueenE I completed the video and stated in my initial comment that you did not claim the show was ethical. Is love blind? No, absolutely not. Why go on a show like this to prove what viewers already know? I never thought that the show was anything more than for entertainment purposes. That being said, if the show producers legally complied with all of their contractual obligations, they’re good. If the actors are butt hurt because they they came off in a not so positive light on the show, or feel that they were mistreated, oh well. They got their 15 minutes of fame. Some of the contestants are addicted now. I’m seeing a few failed contestants on other Netflix games shows. Hope none of them are the ones complaining.

i'm not with the whole "the only thing to drink is alcohol so we're being forced" thing. alcohol is literally dehydrating, so if you're thirsty there's no reason to drink it, you're better off just not drinking anything. now, if there's no water or hydrating beverages available, that is unethical in my opinion for production to be doing. but it's not like producers are force-feeding alcohol to cast members. on the perfect match there were 2 contestants who were sober the entire time.

@jules8273 Жыл бұрын
@@kells4315 tbh I do assume that most grown adults are aware of the dehydrating effects of alcohol. it's not just "a me thing". if this isn't something you know about, you DEFINITELY shouldn't be drinking alcohol. but for educational purposes: soda and alcohol aren't even truly comparable in this instance. soda is less hydrating than water because of the caffeine, but it will still hydrate you to a good extent. you'll gain more water than you lose overall. alcohol will dehydrate you to the point where you can actually die because of the lack of electrolytes. alcoholic beverages are unique in this way because you lose water in large amounts. no other type of drink will do this.
