I remember this song playing after I broke up with a guy I was nearly engaged to. He "disappeared" on the day we were to look at engagement rings. He was later located and decided to just up and go to Florida. The weird thing is that it was not I pushing for this marriage; it was he. Couldn't understand any of it. Broke up with him and good thing I did. But I remember just putting this album on in my car and this was playing. Serendipity! I was blind up until that point....but no more!

When I listen to JWs version it seems that the emotions are just more desperate the pain too much to contain so he screams it out... not so much anger as frustration and desperation - In my humble opinion :)

Jack applied his trademark blues-inspired rawness to this song and made it a painful outburst of emotion. The original sounds more like the tale of someone who has accepted his faith. There really isn't a right or wrong version of it, just different interpretations :-)

I really like Jack White, but his version has nothing on the original U2 version. Taken in isolation, White's version is still brilliant - it's a wonderfully crafted song, it's almost impossible to screw up. But his bluesy take on it is done in a style that is rather over-done in the music industry. U2's take on it is unique, which maybe makes it harder for folk to accept. But delving into it, it's far more dark and therefore more interesting than White's version. Everyone knows what a great singer Bono is, but here he is wonderfully restrained, singing in a resigned but sinister tone - almost a sigh. Along with The Edge's eerie guitar, it gives a subtlety to the song which makes the tune incredibly haunting, indicating an underlying menace. White's version completely unyields this in his version, offering a brilliant alternative, but while being outright aggressive, it loses the subtlety and disturbance of this one which lingers in the memory long after hearing it.

This one is really good, but I do like Jack White's cover better. This one seems more mourning than anger whereas White's is the complete opposite. Both are very emotional and haunting. It actually is scary listening to this song, because of all the emotion these two artists put in and know about love. Wow.

RynoScott, to answer your question about how a person can like Jack White's cover of this better than the original -- For one thing, it depends on how big of a U2 fan you are. I, for one, love U2's older stuff, but pretty much after Rattle and Hum, I lost interest in them. They started to sound the same in all their songs, and Bono's sound didn't carry over well from the 80s to the 90s. That is just my personal taste and my personal opinion. And frankly, I love Jack White's style. That man always makes a song his own, and he makes the song "haunting" in his own way. And, lastly, according to reports, Bono's initial plan was to send this song to Nina Simone to do, but in the end, the band decided to keep it for their themselves. The reason it was not included on Rattle and Hum...the band did not believe it was "U2 enough". So there you go...
