Johnny Guitar Watson released an early rap song called "Telephone Bill". On a related note, check out the 1968 song "Here Comes The Judge" by Pigmeat Markham

Jay & Amber, Johnny "Guitar" Watson actually had three music careers...1952, age 17 playing piano with Jazz artists of that time.......then he picked up the guitar and became a very influential guitar/blues artist with a big innovative "echo guitar" instrumental "Space Guitar"............when times start changinging in the 70s, he re-invented himself again by dressing like a Pimp and playing "Funk/R&B" music. He influenced many top artists (Frank Zappa, Sly Stone, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Etta James wanted to be the "female version" of him), and many more....
@1dkappe3 ай бұрын
Johnny took Etta James on tour with him and mentored her on being a touring musicians and also how to sing ballads.

He was a great artist, R.I.P. Jimi Hendrix said that he was an influence on him, he worked with Little Richard and T-Bone Walker too. Tracks by him which I suggest are: "Gangster of Love", "Three Hours Past Midnight", "I Need It", "Those Lonely, Lonely, Nights", "A Real Mother For Ya", "I Wanna Thank You", "Ain't That a Bitch", "Space Guitar", "I Don't Want to Be a Lone Ranger", "I Want to Ta Ta You Baby". There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.

Many a rock artist and legend considered him the greatest living guitarist, especially after B.B. King's death. He reinvented himself and his sound in the 70s and had a great run - A Real Mutha For Ya, Ain't That A Bitch, Gangster of Love. Ta Ta Ya is also my fave.

Johnny Guitar Watson was originally a "conventional" blues artist, before veering toward funk in the 70s. He claimed, as Buddy Guy did also, to have performed a lot of the antics Jimi Hendrix became famous for but before Hendrix.

Johnny Guitar Watson died on stage of a heart attack. Supposedly, his last words were "Ain't That a Bitch." Whether that was his comment on life or he was naming his song by the same name is not known.

One of Zappa's faves. When the Zappa Family Trust requested that Eddie Van Halen induct Frank to the RnRHoF, the HoF said Edward was already inducting someone so they had to pick someone else. They said Johnny Guitar Watson. The Family Trust asserts that they were told by representatives of the HoF 'that 'n-word' isn't inducting Frank'. So they ended up with Lou Reed. Lou and Frank had a notorious dislike for each other. So, it's pretty amazing that the RnRHoF would maneuver Lou into position to induct Frank, and also apparently take racist shots at one of Frank's fave guitarists. Thank you very much for the reaction, not every day you hear this under-rated artist reacted to on KZbin.

Johnny had a career that dates back to the 50's. He was a mentor of Etta James and if you listen Johnny's early music you can hear the influence he had on Etta James. Although Johnny's main instrument was guitar he was a multi-instrumentalist, he was also a damn good pianist.

Johnny Guitar Watson was a multi talented artist. Guitarist, Singer Producer, writer, arranger, and proficient at all instruments. He was relevant and reinvented himself from an R&B Blues artist in the 50s and 60s through being a funk Pioneer in 70 & 80s. Extremely Influential to many artists including another musical giant in Frank Zappa. Here's a few great ones... -Space Guitar (one of the revolutionary guitar songs of the late 50s-early 60s) -Gangster Of Love (the quintessential JGW song...1963 version) -Steppin In -Real Mother For Ya -Ain't That A Bitch -Booty Ooty -Lone Ranger
