WOW! Thank you SO much for showing this in its original airing when DBZ was first on Cartoon Network/Toonami. Many people don't remember this, as they were more accustomed to watching Dragonball Z Kai. This was one of the most heartfelt scenes. The pause, the background music, that whole "Daddy!" moment: I just smile and tear up a bit everytime. Love this scene myself, as well as many other great moments from the original Dragonball Z airing. Thanks again. 😊

Goku didn’t become bad until Super. Aside from bein’ on Yardrat for a year & choosin’ to stay dead for 7 years, Goku’s absences were really due to circumstances he couldn’t control (such as bein’ dead, havin’ to get to Namek after healin’, his extracurricular heart attack, etc.). The only BAD thing Goku did in regards to his children, was give Gohan a “fair fight” against Cell. People could argue leavin’ his kids on Earth when Buu destroyed it in favor of Dende & Hercule, but it ultimately worked out fine seein’ as you NEED Dende for the Dragon Balls to work & Hercule came in clutch for once

This is one moment, he does care about his family but being an actual father he wasn't very good, he mostly cared about them training & getting stronger. Plus her always left for days, weeks, months & even years on end leaving chi chi all alone & piccolo was the one who basically raised Gohan when goku was gone dead AND alive...he wasn't a dead beat but...could've done way better, shit vageta did better then him...

@NinJaFREAK17 You already know people gettin' ready to SWARM after that Vegeta comparison, sayin' he's worse & so on, but we can't just look at the parenting style of the 2 with regular human standards. These are 2 Saiyans, 1 who lost their instincts at the age of 3, & the other who has carried the typical Saiyan mentality in every aspect for his entire life, but whereas Goku is more loving, he's pretty much just a nicer version of canon Bardock when he really should be BETTER than that. Meanwhile Vegeta has flipped the idea of the average Saiyan father on its head, he's basically the Cliff Huxtable of Saiyan fathers. It seems like he doesn't even mind if Bra wants to be a fighter or not. Ultimately, Vegeta actually DEVELOPED as a dad, Goku however......has pretty much just stayed in 1 place.

I think the anime ruined this moment. In the manga, Goten did not run to hug his dad. Instead, he didn't know what to think of him and remained standoffish towards him. Neither he or Trunks understood what was so special about Goku as neither if them got to know him beforehand. When Gohan was presumed dead and Vegeta sacrificed himself in a failed attempt to kill Majin Boo, both Goten and Trunks had less reason to respect Goku as he was unconscious while all of this was going on. It wasn't until Goku began to teach them the Fusion Dance as well as go SSJ3 to hold off Majin Boo that the 2 finally understood why Goku was so revered. Then, their time with him was cut short as Goku had to return to the afterlife, then for Goten, the reality that he'd never get to see his father again hit him like a ton of bricks, so he started crying and ran to finally hug his father before parting ways. In the manga, Toriyama took his time building up to it and Goku earned that hug from his son he never met before. The anime goes for the cheap, sentimental, "hit you in the feels" moment where he hugs his dad almost immediately after meeting him for the first time, so the hug he gives his father before parting ways has less impact because we've seen them hug already. There was a method to Toriyama's madness of which the anime completely missed the point.
