Buu didn't want to actually blow up,his self destruction was just a distraction,he disappeared for 1 hour so that goten and trunks could fuse again(fusion has a 1 hour cooldown),he taunted the boys and asked them to turn into gotenks,then he absorbed gotenks cause of his power and piccolo for his wisdom,then he started to clap gohan until goku arrived and tried to save the day.

Frieza himself is fun to watch, but especially back in DBZ he was the most stereotypical in terms of villains. Cell was pure joy to watch.
