This story becomes much better once you get all the Lovecraft references and how easily they fit into each other, like Mr Freeze in this universe being a reference to Cold Air, a story about a living-dead guy that will die if he is not refrigerated. Or how Ra’s filling the role of the “Mad Arab”, etc.

I’ve always thought this story was kinda cool. I always appreciate Tiffany bringing light to some of the more out there type of stories I’ll also add that if you look into it, Lovecraft was a guy that was afraid of nearly everything. The dude was from Rhode Island but was terrified of the ocean but simultaneously afraid to go far from home (like many Rhode Islanders, speaking as one myself)

I’d say even Lovecraft wasn’t adverse to using gore but it was far more visceral and odd than what modern horror uses. Of course his best tales use a different type of death for characters like what happens to people in the Color out of Space

This story is honestly fine, but as a huge Lovecraft fan, I can’t help but feel like there is just so much more potential for a Batman story with elements of Lovecraftian horrors than something like this that’s only just “fine”. The art is pretty damn great though. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Si Spurrier give it a whirl, his comic adaptations of Lovecrafts work have always been pretty good. Add someone like Mignola or Francavilla on art, and you would have one hell of a book.

I often find this "we are insects to them" explanation of Lovecraftian horror. This is a decent enough take although there are multiple tales in which humans do have some kind of role. Some more tales are core Canon than others but this explanation never quite explains these roles even if it is just the role of dupes. While some it can simply be bypassed by saying there's only so many ways to justify a human narrator or that Lovecraft evolved in his writing. ultimately there is an often overlooked mysterious (and rightly so) link between his horrors and humanity and/or earth which is at least a small part of some of the intrigue.

I'll break the illusion for you. The manner in which Lovecraft describes his horrors is just his racism and overall misanthropic feelings towards other humans. He'd come across a person he despised and would use his gift of fictional writing to dehumanize people.

Definitely @geniejunkie. You often see greed (for example) and other such vices in his work and a lot of the darker depths of human nature. It's funny because sometimes the characters are worse than the horrors they're discovering. Honestly Neonomicon hits on that so well it feels perfectly tailored to be in the Lovecraft universe.

Theres a story love craft wrote about a scientist who lives in an apartment with refrigeration machines. They end up breaking and he decomposes and melts into a pile of gore. I’ve always wondered if the idea of Mr freeze was taken from that story. I think it was called “Cool Air”.
