Always useful tips, Leila. Thank you so much.. Unfortunately, as an italian speaker, I have to admit that, it's our habit to say: "ehhh? " ...but it's so difficult to lose this bad behaviour. I definitely struggle to be more polite and often, I answer saying: "Sorry" ... But I'm not focusing on the topic object of the speech, I could say: "ehh? " ... So it's a fight! 😊👋

I work in an area with 15 overhead fans and 7 fans in an ice case for a seafood/meat market department at a supermarket. What bothers me are the customers who are so quiet I cannot clearly hear their order. These problems get compounded when water, soap, or sanitizer is running. These problems happen repeatedly and are extremely frustrating! Why must I ask the customers to speak up when they should know the environment where I work and speak up?

In my view ''What did you say' is the worst. 'what', 'ya what' etc. are bad. 'what did you mean by', 'I didn't get what you mean', 'I didn't catch what you said', 'I'm not sure I understand what you mean by' etc. are not good. 'That went over my head', 'It's all Greek to me (a quotation from Shakespeare)', 'What are you on about', 'that was clear as mud' etc. are complicated and unclear. We should use the phrases/words/idioms that are short, easy, lucid and polite
@olive37002 жыл бұрын
"What did you say?" with a tipped head, polite frown and a soft voice is fine. "Excuse me," and "Sorry," makes people wonder what you're apologizing for. "Come again," is confusing and old fashioned.
@NoriMori1992 Жыл бұрын
"Excuse me?" and "I beg your pardon?" tend to sound confrontational, so I would avoid them if I were you. Then again, maybe they don't have so much of that connotation in the UK.
