Please Read! If you are going to get a kakariki please do focus on the heart disease section. This is very true. My kakariki was a present. I hadn't researched for it. I researched for a budgie. My kakariki then didn't get the right treatment because there isn't much information online. This is a great video! And helped me understand about my old bird a lot! Thank you so much for clearing this up! It has made me settle from his death! Your amazing love of pets!

Everything you said is 100% true!! We love our guy, but he is a super messy eater and BUSY! He's out of his cage whenever we're home because he needs to roam around and yes, get into everything! Eats the edge of books and magazines, chews on the edge of wood cabinets or window sills, so we need to give a lot of soft wood or yucca chew toys. He is on a constant lookout for a girlfriend and regurgitates on anything shiny. He gets really possessive over certain objects and tries to bite our feet all the time :D

I miss my little blue kakariki so much. Sammy was a beautiful little girl who we only had for a year or so. She laid a couple of eggs but it was just too much for her. The third egg got stuck, we found her very unwell one morning but it was too late. The next morning we got the call from our vet to say they'd done everything they could but that was it, she was gone. Kakarikis are stunning and such gentle birds.

Ive had mine for probably a year and half now. He is such a blessing. At times i think he has said words. Just not clear. But he is lucky he is alive. The part about the getting into everything. Well one of those was a door that shut behind me. Lost his bottom beak. Oh my was i beside myself. Lost the whole bottom beak. The vet was not hopeful. All he could suggest was to feed him wet food. He is such a smart bird. Was not keen on that so he started to eat from the spoon. Instead of me trying to syringe it in. Was not keen on that because i felt his top beak was getting undermined. So yea i make sure he has coffee ground seeds. But honestly i only do it just in case. Because he eats nearly everything like normal. Has a very strong tongue. I just have to make sure i cut his top beak back with a bit of a point. Been like that for 8mths probably. Never grew back. On the funny side though he has a romantic thing going with my little Turquoise. She is still with him.... Tobias the budgie is her side piece ;). But she has refused sexual activity with my Kakariki Since he cant do the throw up thing. haha. But recently she has started to let him. Its absolutely ridiculous as he is 3 times her size. Sorry this is long. Anyway not only is this Turk letting him, the budgie she has been trying to lure my female conure in on her debauched ways haha. No eggs yet so not even sure the Turk is a female.

Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot when I was deciding on which bird to get! But, I gotta clarify one thing: nope, the female isn't loud at all. Sometimes, she would be loud very briefly, but usually she's doing cute little sounds. The male though... he IS loud. And he DOES continuous sounds all over again. In Germany, they're called "goat parakeets" because their sound kind of resembles the sound a goat makes. I call him my little goat machine gun LOL

I loved this video! Summer is adorable and reminds me of my Kakariki Ricky so much! They are like twins! I was wondering if Summer frequently does this bowing gesture in one spot for 30 seconds-1 minute when Kakariki’s “present” to their mates although there is no male kakariki around. I noticed my Kakariki does this often and at first I thought it might’ve been tail bobbing but after lots of tests and taking her to the vet she’s perfectly healthy. FYI - My Kakariki is 3 years old.

Thank you for your video. I haven't understand everything as I am German. But I do know much more than before and understand much more. My family got a yellow fronted parakeet, firstly to foster but than till her end of live, when I was 13. We only had budgies before and didn't know that species beforehand. So she felt lonely without a partner and wanted to have her one. We were told, that it is a red fronted parakeet. (For the explanation, they are called differently in Germany so that you only really know which one is which by their behaviour, at least if you don't know like I did till today, the English translation or just right knowledge. In German the yellow fronted parakeet is something like a jumping parakeet as they are more often on the ground, and the red fronted parakeet is something like a goat parakeet, as they are making sounds near to those of goats.) Soo by this mistake we got her a young red fronted parakeet as a partner. His name was Strolchi. We got him only two weeks after we did get to know that Susi the First is living for us forever. First Susi got our old bigger budgie cage and Strolchi a little smaller one. When they did fly together and interacted well, we decided to get them together into the smaller cage. It was only around 2 weeks that we got Strolchi. I am the youngest in my family, so I was considered taking care of Strolchi, so that Susi gets back first into her cage. But she know that something was going on and wasn't tamed either. Strolchi was neither. In this process 3 taking care of Susi and I alone on Strolchi he did something making me cry. He landed on my head ❤️. Finally they were together in the cage. From this moment on we showed Strolchi, that he is safe landing on us. Susi passed away and we got Susi the Second from the same person we'd gotten Strolchi. They were absolutely perfect for each other. They tried to breed and everything was going very well. This Susi wasn't sure if she could really trust us and was sometimes even screeching, in the first time, if Strolchi landed on us. Strolchi got more and more tamed. He always chose me or my Mom for the next greater step. And he loved the "elevator" we were getting him out of his cage by give him one finger than taking him out we were moving slowly our finger up and down and even the whole arm. Eventually he flew than but sometimes you saw him enjoying it fullest. Than he started to talk. First it was a distinct "Komm doch" (Come here), later he called my brother and my Mom fully understandable even for outsiders by their names (Mom as Mama) only my oldest brother and myself he wasn't able to phrase. They had three syllables. But he now decided to call us all first with a name and than a Komm doch. It took as quite some time to find out, that calling Komm doch without something behind was ment for my oldest brother and calling Komm doch with a screech of three syllables for me. Easy to say: I am missing him dearest! Eventhough he passed away only being a bit over 2 years with us. So why is this story so long? I was asking myself over the past 13 years why he died so early... And now, after watching this video, I think the answer is: because of two reasons. Firstly my mom had gotten really ill and was only now and than at home, we kids never till he passed. My mom told me, that his last sentence has been "Mama bleib doch hier" Mom please stay. And the second reason might be the heat at that day. Before this video I had been a bit angry with myself not trying to keep them with at least one of us till mum came back home, eventhough at least once a day one of us looked after them for over an hour. Now I know, that this blame has been to much. We should have known much more about them. This is perhaps the biggest reason over all. But he was happy with us and my family, and maybe I the most, with him. He is still in my heart.
@peachschmidt51973 жыл бұрын
Oh and they also loved bathing, all three. But we never had to clip their nails. They had real wood everywhere and no plastic inclusive the bark. They had a sand place too. They did fly everyday for several hours. And their cage (we build specially for them so they don't have to be in the budgie cage) had been 1.5m x 1m and 4m.

I just received a turquoise kakariki for my birthday. We’ve always had birds growing up and it’s a passion of mine now in adulthood. I have two Indian ringnecks as well. One I personally raised from 3 weeks old. They are kept in a separate rooms though so no worries. I have the opportunity to have a mate for my kakariki but I really enjoy pet birds. I’m told it’s better for them to have a mate. If that is the case I would do it for him, happily. Does anyone have an opinion to share on whether they are better off paired, or would be just as happy single as a pet?

I have a really important question! My kakariki had a tail feather pulled out by my Conure, after that he seemed fine, but today i went to pick my kakariki up as he cant fly and he lost 4 tail feathers as he slid out my hand His name is red, hes not yet tame either but this concerned me greatly ♡
@Loveofpets3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the feathers will grow back unless he has a disease like beak and feathers disease etc. Sometimes with stress and handling the bird the feathers will fall out as a defense mechanism. Let him sit on your hand and avoid holding him in your hand as they don't like it and you could damage the feathers.

Chickens! Yes! I had a female kakariki who sadly died after 4 rough years :c she suffered egg laying and broke her foot. Thanks to bad doctors we had to amputate it. With all the pills her body had a lot of problems, she had bad feathers and at the end she got respiratory illness. I was healing her, she lost her voice and at the end she died all of sudden just in hour.. I guess either heart or any other organ just stopped working, thats it :c she was a pretty warrior T.T After almost half year I just got a male kak :3 just a day ago. I am afraid he is a mix of red and orange headed kak (he is yellow, but his read is small and has some kind of gradient to yellow) but he is super energetic, he tried vegies today and I hope he will get on healthy diet very very soon :> your parrot room is just a dream for me, good job!

Hello! I also have a yellow kakariki, she looks so similar to yours! Her name is "little lemon", in Dutch: Citroentje :) she is about 8 to 9 months old and since june, she has laid 16 eggs! I've been sooo worried about it because she does not have a mate (due to little space to hold 2 of them). She gets a lot of free play and flight time around the house and started laying eggs in the laundry bin. I already contacted the vet and she said that if she doesn't show different behavior or sickness symptoms, she should be fine. But I'm still worried since she keeps on laying eggs... She is still very active, bubbly, shows absolute no signs of sickness at all. But still, I would love to hear your opinion. I don't let her enter the laundry bin anymore so now she just lays the eggs in her cage. She has no nesting material at all. I really hope you can help me to stop panicking! 🙏🏽❤️

That's alot of eggs especially for a young bird. I suggest to let her lay on the eggs until she is no longer interested otherwise she will keep laying. Provide calcium like a cuttlebone, foods higher in calcium or liquid or powdered calcium for birds. Be careful as they can overdose on calcium. Take everything away that looks like a nest. Put her to bed earlier to shorten daylight hours. If she doesn't stop laying eggs ask the vet about lupron injections.

@@Loveofpets thank you so much for your reply! I've already tried to leave some eggs so she could lay on them but she shows absolutely no interest in them... So the vet said I should continue taking them away. I will put her to sleep earlier, hopefully that will help. Should I throw a towel over the cage? Because now, she sleeps without it. She has 2 cuttlebones in her cage and I provide pellet alimentation and fruits and veggies aside that. Sunflower seeds as a treat, maybe 2 or 3 a day. It's very peculiar right? She is sooo fit and active and still lays so many eggs, I really hope she will stop laying them soon 🙏🏽 thank you!

Is she eating the cuttlebone? Offer Kale, Swiss chard or broccoli as they are higher in calcium then other greens. Is your vet an avian vet? If it's light in your house then cover her. Or put her cage in a dark quiet room for sleep or use a sleep cage.

@@Loveofpets yes she eats plenty of the cuttlebone so that's why I try not to worry too much about her. My vet is an avian vet. I will try to put a blanket over her cage so she sleeps enough. How many hours should I provide darkness for her? Thank you so much for your help! ❤️

u said that they don't make a lot of noise, in my experience my kakariki has pick up word that i use when handling him and he usually talks and sings a lot if they know how to talk or whistle or sing, however its very rewording when u take ur bird out the cage and he says "love you." or "Hello" or what ever they pick up or are tort. If u dont like a lot of noise then i would not recommend to teach ur bird to sing s it often come out as screechy tune, but i would definitely teach them to talk. Also thank u for this video really helped as i was debating whether to clip or not clip my kakarikis wing as we live on a big far with lots of trees and hes dark green so he could easily be mistaken for a clump of leaves except from his red cap and there are 4 children who aren always aware if hes out or not, i have put it of for the winter as we dont spend as much time outside and there aren't any doors constantly open, but i have decided to not clip them based on what u said. he know re call so if he dose get out some time i can call him down, and when ever i walk into anther room he follows me and sits on my shoulder. thanks

I have a male Kakariki, I've had him for a couple of years now, he's 9 years old. I believe he was kept as a breeding stud, & was never socialised. We've built a decent relationship - I stroke him, & feed him by hand - but he is not comfortable out of his cage. When I leave the door open, play videos of Kakariki calls, he goes crazy, rushing around & calling, but he'll never leave the cage. Any suggestions as to how I can convince him he's safe to leave his cage would be welcome - I'm sure it would improve his life quality!

Thank for the nice video. Keep it up. Educate people please. Thank you. I have 23 Kakarikies. 5 different colours. And yes they are dust free and like to bath a lot. And fly around explore. They are fun to watch. But they do not make the best pets. As they do not like to be handled for scratches. And never clip a Kakarikie’s wings. They get depressed. And yes as she is saying. They need a big cage or a big room. Mine have 10 feet X 24 foot room. And even that seems at times is not big enough. They are so much fun to watch. The more toys they have the better. And I find that to. They spin in the seed dish. I think it is just the way they think. Or the way they do. And not noisy. I just love them. Remember no bird should have clipped wings. Especially Kakarikies. I always say if a person can not handle a bird with out clipping the wings they should not have a bird.

There's a few instances in this video where you look a little frazzled. I'm guessing from all the "jump cuts" we didn't witness and you chasing your kakariki around 😄
