there's been done research on whether rats prefer what we think of as harmony or dissonance. i can't remember the results, but the question is starting to get answers. i've of course wondered about this before. and there's one thing i'd like to point out. i'm terrible at improvising music, because there's now way i can get a full overview of all the possibilities, and choosing one out of a thousand for the next note is just so close to impossible that i gave up even before i started really trying. i can't even write good music, it turns out as flat as my most emotionally supporting tone of voice. does any other intp have a similar kind of experience?

Music instructor: "How about we just starting playing some instruments?" INTP: "Love to, but first I actually want to learn all the main functions of the instruments with at least an advanced level of understanding, study their shape and how sound is created and carried by their design, the range of sounds that can be produced...but before that I should probably start with an actual understanding of the history of music since the beginning of human existence, how each instrument has adapted to historical changes and human innovation over time, and ponder some of the greater questions about concepts I've heard before like harmony, dissonance, vibrato, tempo, beat, and so on. But maybe tomorrow."

INTP questions answered from memory: • harmony is both a cultural and genetic phenomenon. Each note has its wave frequency, so some sounds are going to sum up nicely, and others... not. The most 'harmonious' chords, however, are a product of European culture dating back to Greeks who had their 5 (or 12?) string lute the way it was, which later on became a foundation for scales and note steps. The Asian music sounds so exotic because they haven't had Greek lutes on them. • Music is beat plus melody. But to answer the question the way it meant, the fetus hears the heartbeat for weeks before the birth and learns to associate it with warmth and comfort (same reason why babies love rocking and swings). Furthermore, the brain part responsible for sound processing is right next to our movement and emotion (?) centers, so music literally moves us because firing in one part of the brain 'spreads the fire' to its neighbours. So, sum up our oldest best unconcious memory, engage your brainy neighbours, and some sounds at a beat would sound like music • No, a feral child may like even a type of music they have never ever heard, but their natural liking and preferences would always be what they heard at a young age

No, Harmony is neither genetic or cultural, although culture influences the way we perceive it. It followed the harmonic series in sound, which is the natural intervals that occur over a certain frequency or note. The more in tune with the harmonic series, the more we like it. That's why finely tuned major chords sound better than minor chords, and why we play notes that are closer together higher up in the frequency spectrum and notes that are separated lower. That's how I learned it though

Was not sure what to expect when the video started. Perked up when I saw ENTP go first. Was surprised when Nathan began with, "So I know this German guy is supposed to be some kind of genius...", laid back and enjoyed Nathan's virtuoso rendition, and laughed at the end where his unimpressed audience member notes the essence was utterly obviated. This was very much like a much more entertaining, live music version of an interaction I had last week with my PhD colleague on Max Weber's Protestant ethic thesis. Me: It has some merits, sure, but you know that theory has been cracked pretty seriously recently by modern developmental economists like Ha-Joon Chang right? Colleague: You know Max Weber was one of the founding fathers of modern sociology... right? Me: Yeah! And he did a good job with what he knew and the kind of data and analysis techniques he had at the time. And now we have better! Colleague: Did you even read the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism? Me: Hmm... I'm not sure. I had the book, and I read enough of it to write a very decent essay and discuss it! Weber's hypothesis was well-illustrated but pretty simplistic, and now we have enough counterexamples to disprove culture as a causal factor for economic development. Colleague: I can't believe your gall, citing some economist criticizing the forefather of sociology. Me: Tell that to Ha-Joon Chang and the World Bank, and the governments and institutions today working with modern empirical techniques like comparative economic development data :) (PS I highly recommend reading a pre-print edition of Chang's chapter, "Lazy Japanese and Thieving Germans" here: www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/research/events/conferences/povertyandcapital/chang.pdf Fun, fascinating, important stuff.) ... Can't hold a candle to your performance though ❤️. Thanks for sharing your art and humor with us!

Every ENTPs wanted to play something cool. I've learned how to play guitar on my own (well by experimenting) and "developed" a "music theory/principles" in my head, and then was able to play a random song on ukulele, bass, piano, organ, flute, sax, violin on first try (I just need to figure out how it works ofc hahaha). The problem is, I can't commit to a "regular" practice. I easily get bored with repetitive practice hahahahaha. I just want to experiment. But I really want to play something cool.

Okay, you got the INFJ totally right.. I guess. I used to take acting classes, and one time my teacher's boss asked us students to act a monologue in front of him. My monologue made him cry. The next time he asked me to act something, I found myself dealing with a very similar situation in the video. Luckily, I had been priorly practicing the role of a self centered arrogant comedic man (maybe a very unbalanced ESFP), so I played that character hoping the boss will find it amusing, but not emotional. My plan worked (he didn't cry and make things awkward), except for the fact that he was a bit disappointed that I didn't perform something more dramatic. Oh well.

Funny that you have the ISTJ as the teacher... I think the guy I dated for a while that introduced me to the guitar was ISTJ. He tried teaching me bass too, but I think my fingers are too short with the frets further apart. It physically hurt when he insisted we had the same size hands and wanted me to stretch my fingers further apart (palms yes, fingers no). Some time later (probably after he moved) I got my own guitar & was teaching myself the basics that he missed and little bits of music I randomly found or sought out. It was fun and relaxing, take my mind off things, but I eventually lost interest. I don't suppose I'll ever have an interest for the piano, but if I had, I'd probably just attempt to teach myself (with help from the internet). Then I can choose what I want out of it vs what others expect of me. ~an INTJ

As one of six children who all learned the piano (and parents who were musical to some degree), this topic fascinates me. In the family is INTJ (dad), ESTJ (mum), ESFP (brother), INTP (brother), INFP (brother), ISTJ (sister), ESFJ (brother) and INTJ (me). Drunken or hungover ESFP - highly accurate. (He would also push me off the piano stool when I was playing and then require me to watch him play it badly.) Classic jazz ESFJ - highly accurate. What makes music music INTP - highly accurate. I am a musical instrument INFP - highly accurate. Rigid, boring piano teacher ISTJ - highly accurate. ESTJ would say "No, no, I'm no good at music" and get back to the cooking. Me, as an INTJ, would say "How can I become proficient at the piano without going through the process of lessons and practise?"

"What makes music music." And just like that you broke my brain. Okay I am not fully educated on this because I am a bit too lazy to read through thousands of pages explaining it and will read up on it else when or not because I am a lazy ass- but "organization" was mentioned several times. So I guess it is about how we organize notes, rythm, beat etc. and repeat stuff (and when we repeat stuff)? I mean drumming is also music, tapping a pen repetitively in different ways is also music- solely because it is a sound that gets repeated and mixed up with other sounds. So maybe that's it.. explained very eh roughly.

I have played the piano on and off since I was a kid, never consistently enough, but really I have never been very technically proficient. Also, I was always bored with music theory. I just wanted to play and express my inner artistic vision and arrangements. Now that I am older I find myself enjoying playing the piano in conjunction with my DAW software to attempt to bring to life the compositions within me. In the context of personality type, this makes perfect sense to me. Grand Ni vision with Ti child personal reasoning and ideas, but with Se inferior and Te trickster making the active technicality of it all difficult. However, when I often inevitably mix music with my values, my Fe parent in conjunction with Ti child convictions, allows me to transmit my Ni vision into my music through personal connection and emotional and spiritual devices. Still, in general, but more specifically in music production and expression, I have plenty of work to do in developing all of my underdeveloped cognitive functions!
