Snowbird Trip Update - Adventurous Wet Beginning Early November 2022

This video is my first update for our 2022/23 RV Snowbird trip. We are only about a week into it, but it has already been an adventure, mainly due to the weather.

The Black Ball Ferry crossing from Victoria to Port Angeles went smoothly with sunny weather and low winds. We arrived in PA at about 6 pm, so we just headed to the local Walmart to overnight in the parking lot and stock up on supplies.
Since then, we have made four other stops, including a pair of Harvest Hosts member museums called Veterans Memorial (Chehalis, WA) and Evergreen Aviation & Space (McMinnville, OR), plus an I5 highway rest area. We've endured much rain and wind as some large weather systems moved through the Pacific Northwest.
I5 highway through the Siskiyou Pass down to California looked dicey due to a winter storm warning, so we headed out to the Oregon coast. We are at the Salmon Harbor marina near Winchester Bay, enjoying some sunny skies. Gonna stay a while and decide o continue down the coast or retry the Siskiyou route. Mother nature will be our guide. :)

Sounds rough for those from coastal climates. Us "birds" left in the same week by the sounds of it. Left the N. Okanagan on the 18th. Boondocked with the gen in Othello. WA -9C overnight. Not bad. Night 2, Idaho Falls, -15C. Luckily plugged in on the south side of town. Last park on the road to Jackpot. You probably know it. Anyhow, will take the rain out west. Like your channel. Subscribed

Ray a couple tips for Winchester Bay camping. If you go into the marina office, they have discounted prices in the “off season” that they don’t list on the self service board. (Unless policy has changed in the last 12 months). Also, you can use the rv dump station at Tugman state park just a few miles south of Winchester Bay on Hwy 101 and it is free. Cheers

Thanks for the tip about the office deal. Not sure if it was even open or not. We came in on Sunday and wasn't that day. I knew about Tugman SP, but when you add the suggested $3 donation and extra diesel fuel since we weren't heading south plus the hassle wasn't worth the time.

I just left Quebec on there and drove down to Florida. Couldn’t wait to see the ocean and get warm weather. So, weather turned and I am currently stuck in hurricane Nicole right by the ocean. I didn’t really know what to do, so I stayed put and am right now hooked up to the truck in some corner of the Rv park 🫣🙃. Category 1 hitting its worse around midnight. 🙆🏼‍♀️. I hope you get good warm weather on your path soon, Cheers :-0)

@@LoveYourRV Thank you Ray. I made it,, survived without damage 🧚‍♀️,,, 75 MPH gust winds,, or more !! 60 sustained,, I am still vibrating! The sound of the wind and rain on the trailer and the vibration it makes everywhere,, even under the trailer,, the wind made the floor vibrate. Plus the rocking of the trailer when the wind shifted and hit at a 90 degree!! I got scared at every 20 mph increase😱 At high point there is no running out somewhere!! Could not open the door!! Too much wind and danger outside. I thought I could turn truck and trailer to face the wind when it would shift. Big no no. My first hurricane. Learning measures to take for next time!! Like secure everything Groceries, water, and go to hôtel pet friendly,, reserve in advance.😅🧚‍♀️

I'm right there with you Ray we stayed at that Winchester Bay Resort RV Park when we were over there a few months ago because you recommended it. I know exactly where you're sitting because I filmed the whole area. We will be traveling with you in spirit this time. I don't know if we're going to head down south this winter. We missed the weather adventure, but our equipment adventure continues. We got through the Ram break down I told you about where the 4wd actuator when out. When we arrived in Bisbee our inverter had a High Battery fault. after clearing that, the next day it threw a Low Battery fault. Then it just died. No power of any kind, which happened at about 9pm. Long story short, we are now on hookups for 2 weeks, during which we will be getting a new Victron inverter and accessories. Switching back to a 12 volt system from our old complicated 24 volt system. In total, the repair "Adventure" of this trip will be around $7000 for the truck and trailer.

@@LoveYourRV I'm not excited about the savings drain. The night that it died on me was rough. Laying there in a dead trailer wondering how that's going to turn out. YUK! I think i finally passed out around midnight. But I'm in good shape now that I know we will have a better system once it's all said and done.

Ray, I think you would be wise to come on down the coast maybe all the way to Hwy 20 . The weather has really been unsettled here in Northern Ca , nasty weather on 5 over the Siskiyou’s , and same on 299 . Plus it’s got some great views and Oregon has really nice state Campgrounds .stay safe what ever you decide. 😉 !

Thanks, yeah we have done the coastal 101 route to 20 about 7-8 times over the last 11 years, south and back north. Scenic trip. Things look to be drying out and warming up now so we'll wait a few days and see. Cheers, Ray

However there was a video of Bandon, but you missed Table Rock Beach and did Face Rock to the north. Your wife will not be disappointed if you go to Table Rock Beach, especially at low tide. Hopefully before you leave, your wife can get some photos of low tide in front of table rock. There are a bunch of rocks in front of table rock at low tide with tons of star fish attached to them. I broke my wrist on Oct 13th. I got the cast off today, and put in a brace. So we will be able head south, at the end of the month. So we are waiting to head down to Arizona. I love your repots. Last year we followed your trek from Arizona to Oregon.

Yes it's been quite a week weather-wise in Western Oregon. Our home in Corvallis had snow on Sunday that stuck around overnight. That's very early for this kind of weather. We haven't been down I-5 for our trip south (usually in early January) for at least four years. We just go down 101 and either cut back to I-5 through Clearlake or Sears Point. It costs an extra day and an extra tank of fuel but tire chains are for carrying, not for chaining up!

Have filled up 4 times in California now average for diesel is right around $6 USD. Haven't seen any signs of shortages. Cheers, Ray

Over in AZ now near Quartzsite, filled up today for $4.79 saw some signs for $4.29 cash price diesel and $3.49 gas.

Thank you for sharing, so nice! And most of us follow your lifestyle now for quite a while and know a little about you - but ... this time now it came to my mind 'why are they still taking all this hussle, 'exposing themselves and the fith wheel and all the rig to such conditions' - instead of flying direct into Mexico and renting, leaving out the USA completly? Or circleling into - a little up north from Mexico?' And yes that would be a different story, very likely almost no testing and testreports of yours we would miss - but your well-being and living with a little more ease could just as well come before/first? In a way 'it's all about market driven economies' (as usual) - a shop making it too hard and too expensive to shop gets avoided, at least starting from time to time?

You had a some small but succesfull plastic surgery done to your face a while ago? - Looks great, congrats! (By the way, we are at Praia do Tonel, Sagres, Portugal at the moment, nice spot there to stay for a night or two, and we had huge waves coming in from the Atlantic from quite ab autumn storm out there, but rain for just one night - it's pleasant here, the golf stream bring's lots of warm water up to Portugal (and further north, nothing new here) from the aequator. Temps around 75 Fahrenheit in the afternoons. (A little further east along the coast when good visibility we can see Africa. A little nice touch coming with this break from home as well.)

We like the adventure of driving around in stay in many different places, last trip we stayed in 31 spots in six months. Maybe when we get too old for that we will just fly to Mexico and stay in a rental. Cheers, Ray

Oregon's coast is generally pricey now. They are a big tourist destination and make a living off it. This one is run by Douglas County Though, many State parks have dump stations for free or donation. But often, it's not worth the extra fuel to go out of the way to save the dump fees. :)
