How will you get the part of the roof membrane you cut off with the carpet knife out? Pull the slide in some and go at it on the inside? More importantly, how will you plan on getting the new material inside when you apply it? Very(!) interesting project. Can't wait to see the next part(s)!
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is some space to work with. I plan to bring it in and remove the rest of the old material. Then I'll do the major portion of the outside glueing down the new membrane first and finish up the few inches of inside after that.

Just peeled my rubber liner off. It did the same thing as yours. Took little pieces of the osb with it. Did you encounter any wood pieces sticking up from pulling the old roof off that might affect the new liner
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Жыл бұрын
There were a few pointy wood bits here and there. I just peeled them off or pounded them flat with a hammer. The linear can handle a little bit of unevenness. It's been there 2 years now, and nothing has poked through.

You solved one great mystery I have had for ~5 years now; Can I walk or put any weight on my slide roof ? I've placed my hand on it and applied weight but it didn't feel real sturdy like the main roof... Then again, maybe mine is different than yours ?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
You would have to explore your model. I knew mine had a 3/8 inch thick slide roof just like the main roof, I also knew it was aluminum beam construction so felt confident in the support and its been fine, If it was only 1/4 inch board and wood rafters I may be a little more hesitant.
@herb7877
@herb7877 3 жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV Yes you are correct. I'll have to do a little more investigation. Fortunately I have been able to sweep the snow or debris from the main roof or use my ladder. I just assumed it was just a sheet of thin aluminum under the rubber.

Yes, I'll show that in part 2, should be out this weekend. On my slide there is an inside metal flashing I can remove.

I'm planning to add some West Systems epoxy resin to the end that showed some evidence water intrusion - www.westsystem.com/105-epoxy-resin/ But, I'm hesitant to do the whole slide deck as I'm not sure how well the Alpha Systems adhesive will stick to the epoxy resin.

What is the life expectancy of Olefin? I see they have a 15 year warranty. Does the warranty require professional installation?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I don't see a life expectancy, I'll ask Lippert about the install but I'd assume this product being on their consumers sales website is aimed at end users. They seem to be taking on the roll as an Alpha Systems distributor. Who knows maybe they own the company as well. I had a look at the Alpha Systems website and they actually show a 18 year warranty on the SuperFlex - alphallc.us/product-care/ In the details I don't see any mention of needing it professionally installed.

@@LoveYourRV - awesome, curious as my 31sqb is a 2011 as well. The flashing on my 12-foot slide failed in 2018 and ended up running a foot-wide, self-adhesive EPDM patch from end to end to bridge the failure. Just coved it up from the original EPDM to the backside of slide frame on inside...problem solved. Noticed at time that there is dip in middle of the slide roof, so always careful when doing a Walmart stop over to make sure positive slope to ensure never any standing water on membrane. That is why wondering if /3 or /4, as 4 is structurally a heavier product. Thanks Ray.

Looks like it is made by Ainsworth Engineered, here is the best pic I could of all the numbers, kind of worn off in places www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/roofing-wood-scaled.jpg I had a bit of a dip in mine too and now that I see the underlying wood I can tell it is the seam where the 8 foot sheet and 4 foot meet. I think I will add more tape underneath and build the height up a little more, try and even it out.

@@LoveYourRV - thank you Ray. The Exposure 1 rating is a touch of a disapointment. This means the binding adhesive is only rated for during construction exposure to moisture, not what hauling down to Arizona and back gives rise to for protecting the integrity of the structure in the event of a pinhole leak such as you have apparently had. Not really surprised as our trailers were constructed as the US economy was still rebounding from the 2008 crash, when every effort was being made for retail price point...as cheap as possible to make the sale. But hey, at least it has CSA guideline approval...didn't really expect that from an Indiana manufactured unit. Your epoxy plan to lock the sketchy osb together is a great idea. I had my lonely, shop-bound truck out for two weeks until Sunday...missed the 15k adventure to Yuma...counting the days when it and the Cougar get to see daylight for the 2021 season.

At least they use 3/8s. :) My rig was built at the west coast Keystone plant in Oregon. I'd imagine construction is even worse now, at least during in 2010 there was likely a good pool of unemployed to hire from, these days its likely much more difficult to find skilled workers. Materials are in short supply and they are trying to pump them out as fast as possible to fill demand. I can just imagine the corner cutting going on. I'd not want to have to buy now,

Is that membrane PVC?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 3 жыл бұрын
It says its Olefin based. I've never heard of that before. Here is what they say: SUPERFLEX is a state-of-the-art EPDM Free Roofing Membrane engineered to provide premium performance for today’s demanding RV roof designs. SUPERFLEX Roofing Membrane is an Olefin based single-ply membrane that is approximately half the weight of EPDM. SUPERFLEX Roofing Membrane is very stretchable and conforms to the multiple contours of today’s RV’s in a clean, dust-free & chalk-free membrane. alphallc.us/products/roofing/

@@LoveYourRV seems cool. PVC doesn't mold to the shape of the roof- I don't think. That looks like it will outlast the rubber roofing.

Be careful when using Epoxy resin's ? Not all adhesives adhere to epoxy resins. Im not nocking Epoxy at all its just a fact, I have experienced it i a couple of cases. I have a few years experience in polyester vinyl ester, epox resin & urethane, varathans, etc, etc Started in the mid 70's and still very active. My go to when sealing something like that roof would be a polyester especially since it will be sheltered from ultraviolet light.

Thanks for the advice. I applied some West Systems 105 two part marine grade epoxy to a little bit of the corner and let it fully cure before gluing down the membrane. The membrane uses water based acrylic adhesive. Seems to stick to everything really well. I'll watch that corner and see if it bubbles. Cheers, Ray
