Thanks so much, Ray! I purchased the Screen Shot a couple months ago for hubby to install on our Cougar 5th Wheel and failed to notice it was specific for Lippert doors. Looking at It today I thought, why can't we modify it? - and sure enough, you showed the way. So grateful for sharing your innovative modification. Looking forward to seeing the friction hinge install. Our 5th wheel came with the hinges but it began failing after a couple years. The pins that are supposed to provide the friction bent and then ripped little notches in the lip of the door frame so that we finally had to install a door latch.
@LoveYourRV3 жыл бұрын
Ouch, that's not good! So far from what I gather the OEM friction hinge installs seem really hit and miss. Some love them but a great many despise them and some people have replaced them with regular non-fiction. I gather that the OEM installs have 2 friction hinges and 1 regular type. The aftermarket I'm installing is 2 friction hinges that add to the existing 3 regular hinges on my OEM Challenger door for a total of 5. So, will be a little different arrangement than OEM. I'm definitely gonna inform my contacts at Lippert of all of this, though I do know they monitor my comment section anyway. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers, Ray
@rickbeyer66333 жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV I had considered replacing the door, because of the hinges and that we don't like the frosted window. Problem is that the graphics on our trailer extend over the existing door and the new door wouldn't have the graphics. Therefore the $8 latch.

No ours is just the middle one. I think most of the problem is it gets dirt in it mostly from traveling down the interstate. One I lubricant it with dry lube it frees up and doesn't drag but they just don't hold very good in the wind especially if it's a gusty. Maybe the add on will work better. And yes our Montana HC can OEM with it. And noticed the problem from day one.

I am looking forward to that friction hinge video; I wish our Jayco had come with a friction hinge. I liked the models that had them a lot, but I think they were glass doors and I don’t remember which manufacturer.
@dingdongdaddy5893 жыл бұрын
No joke, friction hinges are more trouble than they are worth. The doors are so thin, over time the stress it takes to shut the door causes more problems than if your door swings and slams open all the time.
@liquidrockaquatics39003 жыл бұрын
@@dingdongdaddy589 so does it end up warping the door then?
@dingdongdaddy5893 жыл бұрын
@@liquidrockaquatics3900 - The instances I have seen basically ripped the door jamb from the trailer. Every time I close my door with friction hinges, I can see the stress in the door and jamb. They really need to just have friction on one toe of the hinge, not all - or make them adjustable. I have dumped silicon spray, tri-flow, nothing helps reduce the tension.
@liquidrockaquatics39003 жыл бұрын
@@dingdongdaddy589 I appreciate the information. I guess I will spend my time and money putting in a new fan and skip this hinge all together

It will be interesting to see the result on my door and jam. My door has 3 normal hinges and will add the two aftermarket friction hinges for a total of 5 hinges. Seems that should spread the forces out. Another commented that they get stiff after wet weather.

We live in Washington so it gets alot rain and snow. But even when we travel to dry areas it gotten very dragging feeling. A little lube fixes it. I have talked to others with the same problem. One guy I talked to said it bent his door frame befor he they took to get it fixed. He doesn't do any work on his rig. I was a builder so our's never goes back to the dealer of course now it's out of warranty any way.

So, I assume it came installed OEM? I'm out of the loop on new models. By the looks of the after market one they are sending will I leave my 3 old hinges in place and install the two friction hinges in-between them. So there will be 5 hinges. Is that what yours is? Thanks Ray

Is it strong enough to pull the main door shut when the screen door is hooked to it?

Different topic, have you tried the Camco Tire- Aide ? Have you ever had a blowout? Did you make a good video for RV owner self tire changes both individual, if we have a flat, and how to remove all four so we can bring em to the shop for new tires and balancing. Please include best and or different methods and essential tools such as do you recommend a breaker bar and torque wrench? From my limited research the Goodyear Endurance seems to be the the best tire in the 225/75 R15 size I need. I heard Airstream had lots of blowouts when they used the Goodyear Marathon and now are selling many trailers with LT tires. Wondering what your feelings are about using LT tires. LongLongHoneymoon RVers from KZbin and even BigTruckBigRV KZbin guy also are positive about using LT tires. I think Michelin may make an LT in the 225/75 R15 size. Thanks Good luck with the screen door ☘☀️
@LoveYourRV3 жыл бұрын
Have used the Tire Aid in the past but found it didn't lift high enough so had to use a 2x8 under it. Good in a pinch. I've changed though to using a 20 ton jack under a U-bolt on the axle close to the tire. I find it only takes a few inches of lift to change the tire. But you can check your owners manual for proper jacking and lug nut torque procedure and specs. I've never had a blowout. I've been using Goodyear Endurance for a few years now - www.loveyourrv.com/goodyear-endurance-trailer-tires-eezrv-tpms-review-update/ If can't take the trailer in I will usually take one tire off each side and take them to the shop two at a time, that way there is a tire on each side to support the RV. I prefer to use ST (Specials Trailer) tires versus LT (Light Truck) since I have a relatively light weight trailer they work great. ST tires have thicker sidewalls and are designed to take the side ways extra turning forces. But as you move up in trailer weight many prefer to go to the light truck tires. They can support a higher load and last longer.
@Hundert13 жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV ja, it was funny or a bit odd because that LonglongHoneymoon guy spent time explaining with a bunch of reasons how ST tires are specially designed and stuff just for trailers then the only thing positive he says about LT tires is he "thinks" LT tires are made to higher standards than ST tires. That's what I was thinking two at a time. I have two spares I may put on. I just wasn't sure two tires would be strong enough alone. Maybe I'll block the trailer up a little too ? just in case. I got the feeling we shouldn't raise trailer up from axles and not sure exactly why. I think maybe because the axle could crack? So you say from the axle mount plate is totally safe? I don't have such great access to jack it up from the frame. I will check my manual and see what it recommends. Thanks
@LoveYourRV3 жыл бұрын
A lot of people switched to LT when so many poor quality ST tires were being used by the OEM and got sick of blowouts. But lately, there have been a few like Goodyear Endurance and Maxxis that have been making much better quality ST with higher speed ratings. That was a big issue for speedsters before most ST were rated at a max of 65 MPH and people would drive too fast and overheat them, especially if running a little low on air. The Goodyear rating is 87 MPH so quite the difference.
@Hundert13 жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV I see, I'm for driving safest speed. 65 is fine speed to travel especially with the rig. I just checked, I have top mount springs with only U bolts to jack from. Thanks, best regards
