I hurt my lower back doing a dead lift with no belt heavy , cold shooting pain instantly stopped training and I knew I’d fuck up... took just over a week to heal , could hardly walk , muscle spasms that were agony when i moved in bed ... kept stretching everyday , anti inflammatory and rest eventually it goes ... and you will be able to deadlift again but give it a month before you deadlift at least and start light (wear a belt if you really want to prevent injury)

I was diagnosed with a very severe herniated disc L4 (the disc burst and it is now very flat, less than half of its original size). I could not walk properly, not even sleep, for weeks, I had a tough life for months. Then a physiotherapist who is a former professional rugby player, trained me like an athlete, starting from basic exercises your granny would do... the exercises became tougher with tiem.. pain began to be manageable, I improved flexibility... some of the exercises included straight legs deadlifts, Romanian deadlifs and hip dissociation (a sort of dead lift movement). I lift only 15 - 20 kg at the moment, but that is enough to strengthen those lower back muscles. Squatting is also another important exercise. The idea that you should not lift with a bad back is really obsolete; your spine is meant to support lots of weight, but you must know how to do it and you must build muscles... bigger muscles mean greater bone density and a safer spine.

I had severe low back pain for a year. Couldn’t even put my own socks on without cringing in pain. I had a really bad imbalance with my core. I got my core strong, and am able to do deadlifts again. Now, proper deadlifts actually help my back pain. I also really like doing them with the trap bar too. But, core strength app the way!! Best exercise I found is called the Hollow Hold. Google it if you want to be free of that back pain. Great video!

Deadlifts were my favorite exercise, did them for years and always felt good. Then one time I really fucked something up, felt like my lower back rounded and then bent inwards. Very hard to walk, sleep for a good week or so. Since then it's happened twice, once today. Seems to happen when I don't get enough sleep/food and I overdue the volume. What helps is making sure I have a full gut of air before the lift and basically scraping the bar up my shins to keep it as close as possible. Most importantly is getting enough food/sleep. Sucks because I always fear it now.

Kinda sounds like what happened to me, I was performing the motion too fast and thrusting my hips out too much at the top of the lift I think, felt my spine slip out and then just pain. I noticed I hadn't eaten enough either, and was trying to push high volume and intensity, without much of a warm up. Really wish I had been paying more attention, been in pain for three days now, have a chiropractors appointment tomorrow to get an x-ray, make sure I didn't do any major damage.

It's a great exercise if done correctly, make sure you feel it in your butt. Another common mistake people make is trying to squat, going up and down. This hips should really have more back and forth motion. They will of course go up and down, but the emphasis should be more on back and forth. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

These are great ways to help . I pulled mine last week . this exercise at minute 4:30 is amazing, I do it almost every day,, I add weights, like 4 kg when I do it... then I begin to deadlift with 20 kg. I am 42 and have several worn out discs and a herniated disc. These exercises are great, but must be done properly and you must add weight only when your muscles are ready for it.

There are many things to consider. I spend at least 20 minutes with a new patient taking a history and doing an exam to make sure I have the right diagnosis to begin treatment. There is not a one size fits all approach to fixing back pain. I would recommend first the need for seeing a specialist. Whatever your version of a physical therapist or chiropractor would be. They would be able to tell you what the problem is probably without the x-ray or MRI. From there they can give you the appropriate stretches or exercises for you. However, I am going to start making more informative rehab videos in the next week or two, so subscribe to this channel and I'll get them up ASAP.

Guys, deadlifts are not a bad exercise. It is one of the most natural movements you can make. If you’ve ever picked anything up off the ground, you’ve done a deadlift. Learn proper form. Injuries can happen even to experienced lifters, it’s part of the deal. If you never want to hurt, never leave your house.

Hi Dr, I have severe scoliosis but my curve hasn't progressed in over 5 years. My doctor gave me the okay to do squats and deadlifts but I'm feeling low back pain on my deadlifts. I'm not sure what my weakness is on the exercise but I may have been overextending like you mentioned. In general, I know my body well and know I have imbalances. I have tight hams, weak abs, weak chest, and a very strong upper back. What do you believe would be good secondary exercises to support my lower back for the deadlift? All I know so far is I'm going to do planks to strengthen my abs but I'm worried about other exercises potentially reinforcing my problem.
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis 7 жыл бұрын
Matthew, I would recommend finding someone trained in functional movement screens to assess not only your form but also muscle imbalances and or other faulty movement patterns. This might be a chiropractor, physical therapist or personal trainer. Another thing to consider when first starting out is to work with very light weight until you master the movement. This means possibly being able to do the weight at least for 20-30 reps. You might want to stick with a light weight and perfect movement for several weeks before trying to progress. Also, consider working with Kettle bell swings as they are very similar movements. Again, have someone help you with correct form/movement. Hope this helps.

Hi Doc. Excellent presentation there. I want to share my problem. Maybe you can give me some advice. had an injury 3 years ago in the gym. I was doing the fixed bar lift with heavy plates. I think the place where i feel the pain is called the SI area. Its the lowest part of the backbone. An inch down in the hips area. I occasionally have neck and headaches and im sure its because of that injury in the gym. Whenever i sit on hard surfaces i get this pain. I feel there's an inflammation. It goes away if i get a massage or take some painkiller. But its recurring.i feel pain in the SI area as well and have headache at same time. Its really annoying. Would it be possible to give me some advice.

Deadlifts give you prominence in the gym. If people see you do deadlift, they will put you in a higher tier and have a higher level of respect for you. Here are my two tips to prevent injury... WEAR A BELT! If a belt is not available skip deadlift that day. Second lift a weight below your capacity. If you can do 250 lbs deadlift then only deadlift 200 lbs. Being below your capacity allows you to control your form.

At first, the first month post injury, it mostly just hurt in my left lower back muscle, now it's been hurting mostly when I bend a certain way and it shoots a sharp pain through my spine, I haven't tried dead lifting again, I think the most I've lifted since then was 55 pounds and that was recent. I don't understand why I feel pain in my spine if it was negative. I would love to see a chiropractor but since I came out negative my insurance won't pay for it, I'm Kinda stuck and I have footbal season next august, any advice would be great. Thanks

Hi Michael, I would like to start by addressing your confusion of the negative MRI but painful back. An MRI is simply a type of image of the internal tissues in the body. It can only see major components, the alignment and shape of some of these. Simply put, it cannot see everything and it definitely can't determine who has pain and who doesn't. It would be like taking a picture of a phone (the old house phones, not an iphone) and trying to determine if that phone was ringing or not. You can also have disc pain without the disc being herniated, or you may have injured your sacroiliac joint which usually won't show up on an MRI. In cases like this I find it more beneficial to diagnose using orthopedic tests rather than imaging. Orthopedic testing involves putting you in different positions that will feel like a lot of different stretches. I also use muscle testing where I would have the patient resists against me in different ranges. All of these different tests allow me to asses exactly or as close as possible what is injured. From there I would determine the best course of action to get those tissues to heal as quickly as possible. That might be chiropractic adjustments, it might be different forms of massage or myofascial release, or even acupuncture. I can't say for sure what you need because I don't know what exactly is injured. However, finding someone that can give you full exam, assessment, and diagnosis would be the best place to start. About seeing a chiropractor, you don't need a positive MRI for your insurance to cover it. I would absolutely recheck your plan because I've never heard anything like that. Usually insurance companies don't cover the MRI until physical therapy or chiropractic has been tried for 4-6 weeks. I don't know what state you're in or what your policy is, but, I've never heard anything like that before. Please check again. If that is the case, I'm willing to bet you'll be able to find someone to work with you without insurance for a reasonable price. Just make sure you find someone who does a full exam as I've described and actually tells you what's injured and give you a thorough explanation of how they plan to help you rehab it. There are some chiros as well as some physical therapists that try to shortcut things and just do the same generic treatment for everyone that walks in the door. That will not help in your case. I hope this helps

@@Kickboxer7267 hi, 5 years later and I still have pretty bad back pain. I can deadlift moderate weight (225-245lbs) and squat moderate weight (305lbs) but my back limits me. Honestly It felt pretty normal for 3 years and came back recently within the last year. I’m going to get retested for a MRI and if that doesn’t seem to find the issue than consult an orthopedic. Hope this helps

@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis 7 жыл бұрын
I would get an evaluation in order to determine which tissues are injured and what stretches/exercises would be best for you. Low back pain with bending could be a muscle spasm, a disc bulge, an SI joint sprain. I do have a video on stretches for acute low back pain kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIW7Y6CcgdFjqbc. if that doesn't help go get it checked out

if these streches help relive aome of the pain dose that mean my back will be fine and idont need to see a doctor?
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis 7 жыл бұрын
Most likely if if your back feels better within a week, it won't be absolutely necessary to see a doctor. It might still be recommended though. A good doctor or therapist work on the soft tissues that are injured and mobilize locked up joints. This can help it to heal faster, but also improve your movement to help reduce risk of future injury.
