Love all your content. Thank you. Curios though, with the recent video of Jesse's workout at his gym. His form from what I can see is not as identical to what you show here. It appears his legs are more straight from the beginning of lift compared to you saying squat lower, hips and shoulders rise together. Obviously he's doing great and gains are great, and you've given him plenty thumbs up for his lifts. I guess I'm curios on your opinion on his form. With my lower back aging, I don't take for granted your advice (and I constantly try to work on it and mind my form). I'd love to hear back, even in short reply somehow. Thanks and take care!

I don’t think it is to be fair . You only have to see how he gets pulled out of position into the correct one when he starts the lift. Hips shoot up because his shoulders are too far behind the bar . The starting position is not mechanically correct . The flat lower back and chest up I agree fully with .

Trained at home for a year due to geographical position, jeff taught me most of what i know, when i walked in a gym with some friends, i told them except some home exercices, i had never set foot in a gym before, everybody was asking me advice after seeing how clean my forms were, redirected my friends to your channel, some of them don't speak english so i translate for them but everybody is very happy and lifting healthier thanks to you Jeff =)

@@baam25th31 Fairly certain you do want to keep your head in a fixed position looking straight forward as you deadlift. The exaggerated motion of the head helps you to activate your lats, which is good for multiple reason. Its going to keep your shoulders safer, its going to build tension across your entire back to keep your lower back safer, as well as increase your overall stability on the lift. Its also going to help prevent against rounding your back. The additional benefit is that you can conveniently see yourself doing the lift, at least from 1 angle, helping you visual inspect your form. Of course recording the side angle, or having a second party look at it for you is beneficial though. Just take a look at his lift from 13:15 onward.

33yr old guy here - I've always avoided Deadlift at home or at the gym because I thought they were dangerous, everyone saying it's dangerous, high risk for back injury, etc. Never did Deadlift in my life - stuck with lighter stuff. I've been watching Jeff's videos and wondered what Jeff had to say about Deadlifts and found this. Thanks to Jeff's careful instructions and reputation for safety, I think I got it down pretty good now. Started with 70lbs and lowered it to 50lb in order to master the form for a couple days (lifting with legs, not with the back, etc). Now I feel very confident and safe with this exercise - starting to increase the weight gradually and everything feels natural! It's nice having someone like Jeff who is not only a great body builder, but is also a physical therapist expert who understands injuries and how to prevent them in the short term and long term.

You won't get seriously injured, but when you start really challenging yourself (as most people who watch this guy probably never will) you'll very likely upset the disks in your neck. I've done it, it hurt, and then I stopped doing it. It wasn't a huge deal.

I have stopped so many kids at my local LA fitness who were lifting bad, usually doing upright rows with heavy weights, but last week I stopped some high school kids who were teaching a new guy how to deadlift, and totally had his lower back rounded. I jumped off my bench quick and was like "hey fellas, maybe you should teach him to not round his lower back so he doesn't slip a disk" . The guy teaching thanked me for the reminder, and even corrected his own form. I that if you approach in a friendly manner, with polite suggestions, most people will thank you.

+John Desper The guys who exclusively train upperbody don't realize that heavy deadlifts and squats will literally make your upperbody bigger than bench pressing ever will. Obviously, when bench press is combined with full body exercises, it will give you a bigger chest, but you would just be coming off as dumb if you genuinely believe that people who only train upperbody look "good". Nothing looks worse than muscly arms and a muscly upperbody accompanied with two skinny chicken legs and a flat ass.

most thorough yet foundational explanation. Keep it simple. No involvement of "angle" checklists that don't take into account the anatomical variance of any lifters architecture. So many of my trainers/mentors have promoted pushing back with the hips, keeping the angle of the torso above parallel and critiquing the idea of "squatting" the bar on the lower half. yet in this video you literally went against every single one of those cues. The pushing hips back and out with the demonstration of how it rounds the lower lumbar curve was honestly so eye-opening. THANK YOU, as someone who has never been able to successfully progress my deadlift without significant burning/firing of my erector spinae I hope to take these cues and see how they do.

This is the best explanation and demonstration of a deadlift I have ever seen. Thank you.

I disagree . His hips shoot up to the correct starting position because he is set up to the bar incorrectly . Shoulder blades need to be over the bar , exactly where he gets pulled into position when the bar starts to move . The best demonstration of a deadlift IMO is starting strengths. Have a look and you will see what I see . Who decides what kind of an exercise a deadlift is ?. It’s not a leg exercise exclusively. It’s a push and pull motion that starts out with the legs but is finished by the hip hinge .

Jeff, you should mention how to properly breathe for the heavy deadlift and squatting, or any heavy lift for that matter. Basically how to properly stabilize the core. Thanks!

I helped a guy in the gym a few weeks ago. He was deadlifting from his lower back. Man, if I hadn't warned him I wonder where he would be now.

The only 2 people i've seen on internet with this super perfect technique which i personally have been following. It's Jeff and Elliott Hulse. Only these 2 people focus on each and every aspect of this great exercise. Proper technique for great strength and muscle.

I'm so glad I came back to this one. I first watched this years ago when you first posted it. Due to unrelated injuries, I have been forced to stay away from the deadlift. And I want to begin doing this one again. * Jeff, thanks for all that you're doing man.*

TOTALLY AWESOME TIPS Jeff. So many of these "so-called" trainers on KZbin do everything with incorrect technique and try to preach their mistakes and cheating techniques. YOU ARE THE BEST!!! THANKS!!!
