Brilliant. My new favourite TV show. Keep the 100k builds coming, it's so much more interesting on a tight budget than just throwing wads of cash at a luxury catalogue.
@happydays13364 жыл бұрын
When we built our house--and it was a nice, custom one--I bought a lot of second hand or even brand new items for it from classified ads. We saved a lot and you'd never know the sources for the luxury things in the house--such as brand new marble flooring for the master bathroom that we bought from a person for $700 because he didn't have the money to install it. Our best find was a brand new $1600 Kohler triple bowl kitchen sink for $20 that we found at a garage sale. There are lots of ways to save money doing this.

The mixture of the rustic staircase wall and the bright, multicolored, acrylic, shiny kitchen clash big time! By themselves they're beautiful. One color may have created a more cohesive design. Just my opinion! Everyone has their own taste. Kudos to them for what they've accomplished!

It seems to me those "architects" are more trouble than help - they're talking them into stupid things like that string bannister that don't meet code and have to be shored up at additional expense. It would seem they'd know the code in advance. I hate the acrylic too - for a low budget build, it seems like a huge expense for something that scratches easily and may look dated in 10 years or less.

I think the end result was darling. I’m a very old fashioned interior designer, with most of my clients having no budget constraints. I really enjoy seeing a fun interior that works for families with limited budgets that achieve HUGE/FUN results like this video. So sweet. Not my taste, however, a designers or architects responsibility is to direct our clients and let them make final decisions. I mya not, personally agree, but our clients have final choice. Suck a sweet home and video. Thank you for sharing!

They should have put the powder room (toilet and face bowl) downstairs and put the full bathroom upstairs with the bedrooms.i cant understand why they and the architects did not think of that. Also, the counters should have been made of concrete. can't understand what those architects were thinking not telling them how fragile acrylic is. kitchen counters should have the toughest surfaces in the house next to floors.
@NYCHeartandSoul4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure but I hope they have enough room upstairs to put in a small shower after they live there for a bit. The acrylic worked better than I thought on the cabinets, but the green is just too intense and the soft surface impractical for the countertops and island. that can be changed pretty readily if they decide to do so down the line. big kudos to both of them for their fortitude, design efforts and creativity. rope idea was pretty cool and the vertical tongue and groove is a nice feature. Great couple and I wish them well in their new home!
@coolcpa33214 жыл бұрын
I was really shocked by the original plan that included a full bath on the ground floor and no bath upstairs. Even after modifications, I'd have ensured a full bath upstairs and let the downstairs bath remain unfinished until financially able to complete it. The house has a future on The Unsellables.

In a country house, a downstairs shower is more convenient because you bring in lots of dirt that you don't want to drag upstairs.

They have no money and the architect recommends super expensive pmma instead of paint on MDF. Build the house and install some simple kitchen, you may make it fancy in 3 years. But of course, it must be an expensive side-by-side refrigerator now.

From experience, the acrylic countertop will not age well. It will dull quickly and show every scratches and cut marks. Highly recommend to cover it up with tempered glass. Even better, replace it with a colourful stone.

The advantage is that in a few years, when the acrylic looks terrible, they'll have recovered from the build and saved enough to but something durable. Meanwhile, they have a colorful fun kitchen. Much better than second hand cabinets with a poor paint job.

I love the way they describe a £170k house as 'Super low cost' - I remember watching this series when it was first aired, every house in the series cost more than £100k. It'd be funny if it wasn't so depressing.

Heidi & Steven need to take a bow for their creativity, open-mindedness, sheer determination, and hard work! Y'all did a fantastic job with what was available. Your house is a piece of art (don't listen to the "beige" people). I loved your kitchen, the string art, the beautifully repurposed wood cladding, everything! I can't wait for a "revisit" show to see what new creative ideas y'all come up with. Kudos from the U.S.! PS: I did feel so bad for Steven having to grind the concrete floor. So I have to ask, do y'all not have self-leveling concrete?

For the size of the house space has been very efficiently used, bed rooms are quite spacious and the central living space feels larger than it actually is. To many other builds in this series have very crammed bed rooms because they want onsuites or walk in wardrobes in every of them. I should only have the family bathroom upstairs, and the hotwater tank, a sink and toilet downstairs.
@coolcpa33214 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of the acrylic as it scratches so easily. It would have looked better is she had stuck with just one colorway (e.g. different shades/intensities of green) or a two-tone combination. As it stands, it lacks cohesion and seems smaller than actual. Also, rustic and modern often work nicely, but that rustic cladding juxtaposed with the Crayola box kitchen is off-putting.
@b_uppy4 жыл бұрын
Think they need to get the spacking up, put excess furniture in the storage and move in. It will save them the necessary money to finish the build, and just go at it. It's difficult, but by simplifying short term, and being resourceful in this way, they will be in better shape financially. Would have saved the acrylic for the upper cabinet doors only, because it scratches.

Heidi should be a designer of some sort. She is quick to grasp new design concepts & tweak it into a unique concept. I'm with Steven, I wasn't comfortable with so many random colors in the kitchen. I thought it was going to look like a bad mod style from the 60's. But it actually suits that room. I like the idea of bent acrilic shelves. I'm interested to see if they carried out the deck concept of the same level as the living area. But that requires another follow up season for this one ...

Nice house for about £120000 to £125000 (I guessing $130,000 to $135000 USD). While I do like the plastic rope stairwell web. The rest of the house is too like tooth fruity (life savor candy like colored for me). Especially the old cabinet make over. My self I like to mix old & modern together in the interior. MDF doesn't age well is is a bear to paint. ( tried it with some old kitchen cupboards in a remodel at our last house) My grandfather who was a cabinet maker would have bought a thin but good grade of plywood & made new doors possibly with a few Acrylic sheet see throughs on them. (Acrylic is more expensive than glass or polycarbonate in the USA) The exterior of the house looks rough with the & I am assuming exposed concrete block of panels perhaps glass reinforced panels vertically placed steel siding would have made it more refined ( they are cheap and seldom used residential housing materials here, usually used in commercial buildings) On a tight budget many people in the USA have cast their own concrete counter tops. Some with coloring for their sand to give it some color while others have acid eched ( sorry my spelling is wrong on last word) the tops. Surprisingly most of these amimatures get them to come out looking great (there are a lot of videos on this on You Tube here). It's a matter of taste so I am eating this house as a success, but ,personally, it's not to my idea of good art.

Although it’s not to my personal taste, I am happy that they didn’t create a white box and that they seem to be happy with their design choices. However. One thing I can’t reconcile with is the string art stair case. It’s looks so cheap and nasty. Really, I hope they saved some of the reclaimed cladding and in the future make some sort of railing and spindles out of it to make that whole wall cohesive. I’m also wondering how that acrylic bench top will weather. Did they put glass on top?
