This was amazing! Sticking to the plan they wanted no bills and only a 75K loan, they could easily pay that off aggressively within 5 years if she went full time. Happy for them and personally prefer their final exterior than what the designer was recommending.

They are definitely trail blazers. Next to the tiny house movement - they have done amazingly well in choosing to use parent's land to build on, which a lot of tiny homes borrow as well. Fantastic job and I can see people wanting to copy this home as it's awesome.

See/read few comments negative to the interiors but their style is industrial and the house reflects this, besides lick of paint makes world of difference and can easily be white washed when raw concrete bores them.

So many comments about the sound quality. I've watched this show from different channels here and some are better sound wise than this one but, I also have read how YT and programming authorization and licensing works so I'm not fussed. I just turn the volume down and enjoy the show even if I agree about the places where the soundtrack is overpowering at times. So folks, just try turning down the volume. This was episode #06 for this season and it was one of the only ones where the build financially worked. No serious weather related issues and having the 'electrics' done by the husband helped enormously. Great concept and nice quirky features make this a unique small family home. That painting in the family room must of been painted by Jo'ann (?) and specifically for this interior. That scheme was a perfect landscape in all the right colours.

This is one of the best designed house as you have ever shown and I love everything about it especially the banister on the stairs. I am interior designer in Israel and I am totally stealing that idea and showing it to my clients. The outside is absolutely brilliant I’m so glad they did the split cladding and didnt go for his idea to do the whole thing in timber. Unfortunately in Israel to do polished concrete flooring is exuberantly expensive. Maybe the only thing I would have done differently is paint the walls off white and then seal them

I think they did a pretty amazing job. If they decide in the future to make modifications, they can always plaster a few of the walls to lighten up the space. I’m impressed by their creativity. the stairwell is a great example. It’s also great to see a couple working together. And many of the bills it’s left to one partner to work. Here there was a collective effort. Bravo. And I think the outside of the house is whimsical and uplifting. Plus the energy efficiency is impressive!

We self build our low cost eco multi generation house over about 7 years. Living inside the buildingside as a family of 6 plus pets, children (3-13) beeing involved with the build because of non toxic materials. We finished the annex for my parents in law first and huddled together finishing the big part. Do not wanna miss that time. Two of our boys were able to do all the basic stuff you need to build a house by yourself at age 16. Most of the cost of building our house was paying for permission and the architect we had to involve. Building itself don't need to be expensive.

I really liked this build. The look of it is not to my taste, but then again the owners were very honest and very sensible about their spending. They valued functionality over aesthetic so compromises had to be made to stay within budget and I think that is very mature of them. So often on these shows I see families go into crippling debt and selling after a few years because they were naive and their planning was poor. This family can always change things up later if the look bothers them, however I think that because they were forced to be a tad unconventional the house has more character than other traditional renovations.

I remember watching this video.. and was amazed at what they achieved as well. Cos it was mortgage-free... and also actually energy efficient. They are indeed net zero... basically. So that was a bit surprising to see as well. Which, not many people could achieve or be. With the guy being a builder.. he did also actually... just did make solid choices. Cos those pieces are very sturdy and very strong.

Wow I just loved the way they used STUFF to make a home, plus the eco-friendly way they built it. I live in Vietnam and had a house built, sadly I could not get the local builders to adopt UK methods. We now suffer from a hot house that needs AC cooling, though we do have free hot water thanks to a panel on the roof and a lined tank. I have saved this program and will be borrowing ideas. Sadly each programs comments have been taken over complaining about the music, as this series is in the can it's a bit late. Hopefully the next series will be better. PS: I spent a day at an aerodrome driving a car around squealing tyres on bends and braking to a stop. With a team of sound guys for a 007 film.

I was thinking the same thing. She seemed ready to take some chances but Andy kept saying it's just aesthetics. That may be so; but you also don't want to live somewhere dreary. Her use of color throughout helped. But I would love to have seen what she would have done with a little more budget and more flexible husband. At least paint the walls in the bedroom white to brighten it up a bit and not feel quite so cell like. But that is just my personal opinion. I commend them on their hard work and frugality as well as an eye for conservation.

The property has a great philosophy (green energy) and individuality for the family, however its not appeasing to the eye for the vast majority of people and the flow isn't very great for a family along with the practicality of having young children (I wouldn't feel comfortable for my pets on the stairs let alone a toddler). For me it looks unfinished internally and not in that 'warehouse' way. But if it works for the family and they are not concerned about resale price well done to them!

I don't think their intention was as such, or it could be some of the paints which they got free. Even if you repainted it later on with white... to lighten the entire space, they still put down a very very strong framework/shell to the house. Cos many old houses, are most likely in need of updating, whereas they can live in this space for at least 10-20 years.. net zero.. and any incomes, they would indeed be able to get etc.

Every time the narrator talks, the sound design challenges the listener to hear....YIPES. The text description has a split infinitive "...to not only build..." (which should have been "...to build not only..."). I like the content as a home that works, is not easy. It is a nice idea... Simple ideas like moving the over-sofa picture down from the ceiling, will make the room seem larger (the centre of the pic should be 1.5 meter (60 inches) high from floor. I would have put windows on the blank wall. W#ith triple-pane windows, it would make little difference on a North wall. Colour has helped make the bleak into playful....

Why do you call it Homely when I think you mean Homie , but then I'm use to Homely being a sad thing 😁😁

England, homely means cozy and appealing: homey.

Everybody is complaining about the bad mix of music and speaking parts. We are watching a "pirated" copy of this episode. And it looks like this version is not a final rendering of post production work that was shown on television. All episodes of this series on this youtube channel share the same bad sound mixing because it's simply not the approved broadcasted version. At least we can watch it in our own time and device of choice.

Your sound balance is out of kilter, music too loud when you have dialogue.
