I always expected low poly to become a relevant style, i always liked the look and didn't umderstand when people said ps1 and 64 games look shitty

PS1 games look great, and so do N64 games but the horrendous texture filtering holds back N64 games.

PS1 and N64 games CAN look shitty. It just depends on what game you're playing. The same with pretty much every console.

@@MrMetropolis Nope. N64 is held back by low resolution and framerates... The original Goldeneye/Perfect Dark on console is almost unplayable for me, runs at 10 fps at 320p... But running on PC at 720p its a much better game... And the textures look better than the Xbox 360 remake...

@@earthenscience Wasn't it still the strongest console of that generation? I think the framerate issues are just the games being overambitious, whereas the texture filtering made every texture horribly blurry

If you're at a museum and there's two different art pieces. One is a very realistic painting of a landscape, like you can't tell if its done by hand or its just a photograph. While the other one is a abstract painting thats clearly painted by hand but its imperfections makes it beautiful

Low poly and cel shading has been two of my favorite things since Cel Damage and Crash Bandicoot, so Im excited to see these styles used in the future. (thank you HiFi rush)

Landfall games have developed the peak graphical style. After playing tabg for over 1000 hours i can personally say my vision's model quality has dropped at least 3 settings. I no longer have fingers or toes, and its only getting worse

low poly test creators to give their best in creativity and craft in this limitation, it is like in 2d pixel art games has low budget for talented indie devs, and it just take very very low processing power for budget gamers, i can play a great full fledge creative original 3d game made in low poly with my old pc and who knows maybe in my mobile devices, this trends needs to be keep popularizing

The average consumer doesnt care about stylized graphics, big companies have different target audiences, most of them dont wanna take risks. But there seems to he a change lately with the obvious example being spiderman.

I think its not just the average consumer that is forcing games to have next-gen graphics, its GAME REVIEWERS... I often hear them bashing and talking smack about retro graphics... Big companies do not want some hipster game reviewer to ridicule them for having outdated graphics...

I consider Minecraft a 3D pixel art game. It isn’t like the classic indie game, a 2D pixel game, but it is made of pixels, making it look a bit older. But yeah, I would like to see more videos about indie games. Keep up the good work!

Yeah minecraft is an interesting one its like an example of pushing the pixel art medium past what it would have on its original consoles and using old graphics but focussed on gameplay. Minecraft is actually a perfect example for the points I make in the video

It probably won't become the dominant style-but it's risewill brounden the indie game world, consider it is far easier to create a 3D game- but it will still because 3D games are far harder to develop in general, I won't take over

Also, dont forget that low poly or less graphically demanding games can hit a major market. You would be surprised that many modern games dont hit most of the world because of the graphical demands and the now super expensive buy-in for playing modern games. That is why a lot of cozy or low poly games are having a Renaissance with the emerging market of Steam Deck and devices like it. You really can't have low poly without PC. It's not gonna mention the switch, which is also a nice cozy game medium, but why be locked to a switch when a console like PCs exists

It seems that large AAA companies can't really go for worse graphics than the competition. Just look at the response that the leak for GTA 6 got. Hundreds of comments like "game bad cuz ugly" or "game look bad" indie devs are in a market where shorter and ugly games are an option.

Thats true actually. Companys are obssessed with graphics because the consumers still are. We have these comparison videos between consoles for the same game and you can barely see any difference. I think hopefully it will platao and games will be judged more on how it plays. But for big game companies i can see how its almost suicide for a game to not look like next gen graphics.

there is this perticular visual style in low poly which i totally dont like at all, and it seems to me that a large chunk of low poly games are made in this style, i dont know what is in it that i dont like, the big pieces of poly, the colours, lighting, how they draw objects and world with low poly. Some examples like Morphite, Clustertruck, Virginia

I'm an old fart. I love pixel art and find it nostalgic. "Low-poly" reminds me of the companies that were pushing graphics at the expense of gameplay in my day. But some gameplay is better in 3D. And I look forward to the day when a game's art, whether pixel art, HD 2D, low-poly, high-poly, is pretty much whatever makes the game better.

oh hahha i guess so. I was thinking more of a toree 2 type graphics game with like elden ring level water but bdsp does have really weirdly good water graphics haha. I feel like that one guy on miiverse who rated water graphics. Theres a video idea. Finding the best water graphic in gaming.

@@mitchpitch yeah,, like the idea that a game that was supposed to be really chibi and cartoony would go for such amazing water graphics was weird, but if i am not mistaking the water in bdsp is the place where most of the budget went, so i think it is a nice trade off godlike water in exchange for a good game

In my opinion low poly is very easy to get wrong. There are too many indie games that attempt a low poly aesthetic but just look bad.

@@mitchpitch I could have worded that better. What I'm trying to say is some low poly game projects have a very basic bland sanitized look. Low poly doesn't always mean authentic PS1 era console graphics. A HD game like War Brokers is low poly but still looks like a modern game because it lacks the technical limitations of the past. Low poly can look amazing but it can also look lifeless and generic.

I also never understand why people see 3D games as objectively better than 2D games. As if 2D is too limiting or something. Some of my favorite games of all time (even modern) are 2D. And not all of them are nostalgic, such as Ori and the Blind Forest.

I don't think of low poly as a substitute or even alternative to pixel art. I think they're both part of a lo-fi aesthetic that appeals to 90's kids, that can be used alternatively depending if the game is 2D or 3D.

@@earthenscience I havnt watched this video in a while but I believe when I refer to low quality I'm referring to the word low fidelity or 'lofi'. I know low poly refers to polygon count. I may have worded it in the video wrong tho
