I have low porosity hair and steaming my hair as part of my deep conditioning regimen is an absolute MUST! Without steaming, the product just doesn't penetrate and no matter how long I let it sit on my hair, it does just that....sits ON TOP of my hair. It barely gets through the hair shaft. I've gone through about 3 steamers over the years and at this point, I refuse to buy another one because they're pricey so I recently invested in a steam cap that I got on Amazon for around $30. I also bought a travel steamer. Although it's intended for clothes, it works just fine when I use it on my hair, just be careful not to burn yourself.

I thought about steaming my hair also, but I found an even better way for me. While still in the shower after 1) washing, 2) conditioning my hair, I then put a deep conditioner on my hair and place a deep conditioning cap to trap the moisture and then leave on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse out.

Thank you for this! 🙌🏾 One piece of advice for low porosity hair is to deep condition with heat and alternate at least once a month with a protein based conditioner so your hair will be balanced. Low porosity hair is protein sensitive but a little protein is still needed to avoid moisture overload and mushy hair. Hope this helps! ✨👌🏾

I am low porosity. I discovered that by opening my cuticles with warm water to get products in and closing my cuticles by using cool water to lock in moisture has helped immensely with the appearance and over all health of my hair. I get the extreme darkness and shine after doing this method on my wash days. The nice form of my curl pattern. Strength of my hair. The speed of growth. And manageability. And I must add that topping it off with a quality oil just enhances it even more. And last but not least a little goes a very long way when it comes to how much product I use in my hair. Just using very little makes a drastic difference in how my hair look and feel and grows versus adding a lot or too much which makes it look and feel dirty and dull when all the dirt in the air gets attracted to it.

Thanks so much for this information! For my low porosity hair I do the following: on the night before wash day, I wet my hair with warm to hot water and then apply (DIY) a combination of tgin leave-in conditioner, aloe vera gel and glycerin to my hair / blow dry my hair on a warm setting (to help the products thoroughly penetrate the hair shaft) / wrap in plastic cap / scarf and leave it in overnight. The next day I rinse it out and then wash with tgin rosewater shampoo and use tgin conditioner (both of these are made specifically for low porosity hair). After wash/condition/rinse, I then use my DIY again (tgin leave-in conditioner/aloe vera gel/glycerin) to my hair while still in the shower to keep my hair moist. Afterwards, I seal with shea butter and put in a protective style.

I’m medium porosity. My advice would be to keep it simple. Use shampoos and conditioners that have JBCO and apple cider vinegar in them to help with the protein-moisture balance. I love using Shea Moisture’s JBCO line. I use Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner as a leave-in. I use the conditioning cap from Glow by Daye and keep it on my hair for 15 minutes. It works best when you heat up the cap on each side for a minute. After the 15 minutes I use my own DIY oil to seal the moisture in. I braid my hair up and put on my bonnet. When I go to work, I leave my hair tied up in a durag (scarves can’t fit my head because it’s too big 😂🤣) with a beanie on top. I usually moisturize my hair every 3-4 days. That’s how I maintain my hair every week.

Thank you, thank you Lady Chemist, you have helped me so much. I already use the tgin leave in and Hollywood oils, so I am excited for the other products. Since I've seen improvement while using those. I feel it in my tippy toes at the very least one of those shampoos will work for me. To the community. My hair has a million and one textures. However, the porosity is consistent throughout. What has helped has been treating the porosity and the most susceptible texture prone to moisture loss. I also have psoriasis, and acne, and all of that affects my hair. Slowly; but surely I am getting the hang of it. Don't feel bad if you have not yet, I will be 44 in a few months, and I am now. And by now I mean a few months ago am finally getting my regime together. There is hope for us!

I went to get the Pattern beauty mask but protein was high on the list. Also people who are giving it bad reviews are saying they are low porosity and their hair was dry. The people that loved it said that it defined their curls which says again higher protein. I am conflicted but won't get this one. I did get the Camille rose algae deep conditioner and my hair feels interesting. It melted in effortlessly and the result is that my hair is soft and moist so I would say that it worked. I looked at the wash day shampoo but didn't get it yet. The As I am is hard to find in store but says strengthening so I am concerned

Your moisture cycle may be 2-3 days, you can either moisturize your hair on day 2 or look into one of the moisturizers I mentioned in this video which may increase your cycle. Also, try sealing with hair grease (if your hair responds well to it) this can also elongate the moisture within the hair. I hope this helps!

Can you talk specifically about deep conditioners and recommend some? I'm confused at what actually makes a deep conditioner. Talk about the best ingredients (what to look for etc.), the difference between a moisturising one or a protein one or one that is both. I don't know if I'm high or low porosity, I may be both so please suggest ones that can be used by all. I want to invest in one but won't until I know which to buy.

I have heard of some of these products. Especially the TGIN and the Melanin oil. They are both great products. I am low porosity. Pre-poo helps your hair tremendously. I do it every time I wash my hair. It sets your hair up for the shampoo and conditioner. And it grows the hair. Also using heat with your conditioners. It is a game changer. It locks in the moisture. I have seen a big change doing this.

@@memes.1114 Yes or a hooded bonnet. When you put your conditioner on. Sit under a hooded dryer or bonnet for 30 to 45 minutes. So the conditioner can penentrate into your hair. I also put my conditioner in the shower. When you do that. The hair is moisturized. And you see a big difference. I also do Avacado treatments as well. Adding oils of your choice, eggs, honey and coconut milk. That works tremendously as well. You can do that once a week or every two weeks.

From my low porosity 10yrs of experience, I advise using oil mix (Olive and Coconut oil/other oil preference) for hot oil treatment overnight to wash day. It condition the hair to be silky, shinny, also penetrate deeply to hair shaft that detangling is easy/ free with less hair loss during washing hair.

For my seborrheic dermatitis, I add 1% zinc pyrithione to my favorite shampoo, .5% to my deep conditioner, and .25% to my leave in. I weighed my product and then add the right amount of zinc pyrithione and mix well. I apply the shampoo to my scalp out of the shower with a nozzle bottle and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing it out. The deep conditioner is used normally. I rub the leave in into my scalp and along my strands. This allows me to go up to 3 weeks without washing again but I normally wash every 10 days. I sorry that I can’t speak for scalp psoriasis or eczema. I got the shampoo idea from Dr. Dray , a dermatologist on KZbin.
