A classic example of RTFM. Whoever installed that aftermarket cat clearly didn't read the instructions. Every aftermarket cat I've installed has come with a nice little piece of paper that outlines how to heat-cycle the new catalyst so that the wrapping material inside will seat and bond with the outer wall and the substrate material. If you don't follow these guidelines, the substrate will separate over time and break apart, like we saw here. On a related note, I actually have a video of a Ford Escape that detonated the DPFE sensor due to a melted catalyst that resulted from bad ignition coils and an eventual bad PCM. All that pressure has to go somewhere! ;)

That was an interesting problem there! Save those pieces Ivan! I've been hearing cat material is fetching some good money at the scrapyards lately. 😎 Back in the day, my ol' man bought a brand new '84 Ramcharger with a 360 V8. 2 years after he bought it, we were pulling the ol' Prowler camping trailer and attempting to merge onto a major MA highway - my ol' man "gave her the beans", as Eric would say, and all you could hear is what sounded like someone cleaning parts off with compressed air! Thing was gutless too, and got terrible mileage. The last exhaust job my ol' man did in the driveway on his '71 Ford F-100 landed him in the hospital with 4 stitches in his lip, when the rusty thing landed on his face, so he got in touch with our longtime buddies at the tire shop, and they jammed a pipe through the honeycomb, blew out the pieces, and we were on our way with all kinds of power, and better MPG than when it rolled off the lot! 😁 The good ol' days!

@wyattoneable I recently ran into a persistent CAT code on my son's '06 Honda Accord. I'm new into Shelby county now and was happy to see there was no inspection requirement like back in NY. If I pull the CAT as you said, is there a way to stop it from tripping the money light with it removed from the system, or do you just let it stay on?
@SmittySmithsonite5 жыл бұрын
@@mattg2226 - I don't want to speak for Wyatt, but I've heard of guys using spark plug defoulers in states that do emission inspections - it has to be of the correct thread pitch for both the sensor bung in the pipe, and the o2 sensor itself. The theory is, it pulls the sensor far enough out of the exhaust stream to trick the ECU into thinking the cat is still there. In the past I've seen websites selling electronics that send out a mirrored good cat o2 signal to the ECU (to me, that's not going to last long being under the vehicle, especially if you live, or drive anywhere there is road or ocean salt). If it were me, I'd put some black duct tape or E-tape over the light - FIXED! :)

A exhaust pressure sensor could have detected this anomaly right away... I think at some point Gasoline automakers will have to borrowed that technology from DPF diesel Systems. That sound is also pretty common on Nissan Murano 2004-2007 whenever it gets a clogged catalytic converter... I have been through that before! In my country what mechanics normally do (Not me) is to remove the catalytic converter out of the exhaust pipe, they grab a hammer and a chisel and break in pieces the honey comb structure in the catalylic converter leaving it totally empty and then they reinstall it... of course that procedure leaves a bunch of DTC's on the vehicle but because Dominican Republic does not have emissions regulations they think that is just ok. P.D This honey comb shaped material is extremely valuable so Mechanics collected out of every clogged exhaust and sell it to recycling companies... Technicians even offered to remove it to clients under the argument of fuel economy and future clogging issues...

Back in the 80's we used to replace catalytic converters all the time. Some would split wide open on the sides and some would also send debris back and plug the muffler. Next time put your hand on the exhaust pipe and have someone give the throttle the beans. You will feel very little exhaust flow.
@throttlebottle59065 жыл бұрын
I like to leaf blower/air compressor reverse flow the muffler and pipe with the cat out, to make sure it's not plugged, also shaking the exhaust around hard and listening for rattling in the muffler. I learned that the hard way long too.

Thomas Joy I had the first 80 Citation with cat and carburetor. The cat had pellets inside and a plug for removing and replacing them at 30k miles. There was a yellow flag that popped up in front of the odometer at 30,60,90k. There was a service kit of new pellets plug and instructions for removing the instrument glass to reset the cat flag. When NC started enforcing emissions, I took it to the dealership to put my pellets back in, they had never heard of this. Had to go higher up the chain to get noticed. They sucked them in with a vacuum on the tail pipe.
