I think the test would of been far better if you would of done a more realistic test like running 30 fov 60 and 90 a realistic low med and high.

The lowish FOV setting reminded me of very old school on board cameras in motorsports and movies. Proof F1 needs to massively lower the FOV of its on board cameras in order to capture more dramatic footage.

For those curious as to what FOV stands for it is Fresnel Ovarian Value, which is a measure of how light behaves around women. As there are no girls on the internet this phenomenon is not relevant, much like the entirety of this video.

I like your idea, but I think you could make a bit less extreme FOV comparison. How about creating one more video about the FOV where you can demonstrate FOV calculated based on your setup and the other one that you prefer (tweaked to your own taste). As always, I love your videos.

That's maybe because you don't see enough to your left and right on a single monitor or w/o VR. The sense of speed is mainly due to objects rushing around you, which you can't perceive, then. Imagine, driving a real car with blinders on, wait, 50 % of the people.... 🤔

That's okay, I sometimes steer my real car from the back seat or drive a Jeep w/o a windshield with my feet while laying down on the engine hood. As a side effect one can obtain some insects pretty easily for a healthy nutritation. I'm glad I could present you a life hack.

I race on screen, I race in VR, fly in both, go to space in both and float about on an infinite plain, but I never get motion sickness thankfully, however that low FOV you have there is melting my mind and turning my stomach.

The FOV argument where the calculated FOV is bad, only stands for single screen usage, on triples or preferably VR, the FOV can be the calculated mathematical as there is enough monitor width to show enough information. Can't argue with your scientific methods, but when you were on your lowest FOV, that is what is seen by a single screen user when they are on the mathematical calculated FOV, so your scientific method just proved to them all that higher FOV not only feels faster, it is faster as proven by Gamer Muscle Video's :-)

Why that? The correct fov seems to be too low at first, especially if you're racing on normal tracks as you don't have focus points in reach, meaning, the track is very broad and the objects rushing around you are far away, which seems like driving is too slow at first. AC got an internal calculator, e.g., works perfectly fine for me.

@@chilli-soup Okay...hmm...if you measured your distance to your TV correctly and got all the parametres like width right, it should work. Maybe the TV is too far away so that you need a quite low FOV? It's a 16:9, right? I got 3x 27" 16:9 and am quite close to them (as close as possible). It feels natural and immersive to me.

First time I have felt motion sickness ever. I don't get it in VR either. But the FOV was nauseating. I could not watch the rest of the video. I understand what you are trying to point out but these are extremes that no sane person would ever use. How about doing a similar video with more sensible FOVs to see if that proves the point. [EDIT] Just got to the point where you mentioned the motion sickness. Where are the front wheels actually located? i.e. is your position still behind them or in front of them as I am sure that would also affect how what you are seeing behaves.

The problem I have with fov is when I use one of those calculators on my situation I end up getting good realistic view but I get no sense of speed which makes me misjudge corners so I end going further backwards.

Accurate FOV really only works practically when you have a very large screen and a very low viewing distance.

It takes time to adjust to it. At first, you will be misjudging everything because you're not used to the fov. But once you get used to it, it becomes easier to judge corners than with a non-realistic fov.

I'm sorry but, making a comparison of the extreme levels of Low n High FOV doesn't automatically mean that one or the other is faster lol. I betcha most people adjust FAR closer to the middle of the scale, regardless if you prefer a Low or High POV.. Perhaps a tiered comparison of a game's FOV but with 10% incremental comparisons above or below from center, would truly make it official but, I still applaud your work as you had me laughing when testing the low FOV. 🤣
