It's possible that this was all an excuse to see what racing on the tiny screen was like.

@vsm1456

This test won't work for that. Chris specifically compared these screens in such a way that FOV stays the same. Realistically you will never end up in a situation where an ultrawide and a triple setup have the same FOV. Triples take up upto 180 degrees angle around you. 34" ultrawide that sits between your wheel and your base (40 cm from your eyes, i.e. very, very close) will take like 90 degrees.

I loved driving on my projector, had it set up as a 126" white wall, with me sitting in the middle of the room/screen about 2 meters away.. it was only a 1080P, but my guests certainly got sucked into the game by lap 2 usually... only if i opened the door to the left that the people would realise they were in a game. Now with the obutto, i find that the screenstand does make me feel immersed, just not as quickly as the big screen. Nice video!

I get the idea, but I feel like the realistic comparison people would make is much less extreme - a range of monitors from 24-43" are all semi practical for a pc rig and in reality you would almost always set them up just behind your wheel deck if at all possible. Controlling for the same FOV kinda kills the argument for different screen sizes but that's a real consideration for most drivers
@RacingAnt
@RacingAnt Жыл бұрын
If you're running triples (and you should be. Lol.) the aim is to get 180 FOV. With sizes from 27" up, this is easily achievable. 27" requires the centre screen between wheel and wheelbase, so the arguments for 32s are there. Bigger than that - you gain nothing.
@MattDiffey
@MattDiffey Жыл бұрын
@@RacingAnt that's fair as an end game, but plenty of people have neither the space, the budget not the pc to run triples
@RacingAnt
@RacingAnt Жыл бұрын
@@MattDiffeyI ran triple 1080p 24s on a desk in a tiny office, driven by an i5 8400 and a 6GB 1060. That wasn't much space, nor computing power. I upgraded to 27s in the same space. If I'd stuck with 1080p screens, then the same computer would have sufficed. But I went with 1440p. GPU needed? A Radeon 5600XT. The only game that wouldn't work was ACC. So, it doesn't need a huge amount of space. Cost is similar to a 40" TV, the FOV is way bigger, and can run on quite modest hardware. So, while I get your point that triples mounted to a dedicated rig needs space, and high-end GPU and monitors push the cost, it doesn't have to be that way. A budget option is available, and the triple 24s beat a 49" ultra-wide for immersion, in a similar space, and for roughly quarter the cost.

For me, being able to see the mirrors and out of the side of the car is far more important than screen resolution or size. In fact, I'm doing quite well with three 24" 1080p monitors at 144hz refresh rate.

I used a 29" ultrawide for a long time, and I rather enjoyed that monitor. I then upgraded to a curved 34" ultrawide, and I was expecting there to be huge change and to really be able to see. It ended up being basically the same, just slightly bigger. I want to try out a 55" TV now, but I don't have a monitor stand big enough to hold my TV close to my cockpit. In fact, I have been just pushing my cockpit to the edge of my desk and using my normal monitor that way.
@notdreadyet33
@notdreadyet33 Жыл бұрын
FWIW stick with the curve. I went from 55" TV to a 48" curve, the 55" up that close feels "off." The sides of the view show areas that shouldn't be ahead of you, but by default with a flat screen, they are. Triple 55"s with some distance between the front screen and the wheel would be incredible, but that's a different deal.

Interesting thing about extra large screens... But other than that I'm worried that people will interpret this video incorrectly*. I don't think anyone chooses a screen like that, "I'm going to use 55 hFOV, what screen size should I choose?". Instead, people usually already know where they will put it, so in this case bigger means wider field of view - and that's almost always better: you will either see more to the sides, or you'll be able to set FOV closer, or equal, to a mathematically correct one without it being too narrow. And it's not all that easy to get a screen that would be "too big" at mathematically correct FOV. For example, my 34" ultrawide sits right behind my wheelbase and I definitely want something bigger. Moving it closer to my eyes is uncomfortable as it puts too much stress on my vision. So a screen that's big enough and sits at a comfortable distance will be 45", preferably more, and that's already a TV territory, only a few PC monitors are this size. --- * - Yup, they did. The second most upvoted comment asks to compare ultrawide vs. triples. Which won't work for this test.

Would it not make sense to have a curved screen with a projector used this up close? Has this been tried by anyone, for any application? The output would need to be adjust to the way the screen actually sits, relative to the placement of the eyes. I think if some one wanted to, it could be done. That said, if a monitor brand wanted to, they could make a single wraparound screen as well. It could even come in a small box, now that phone screens can be folded up. Just reducing the screen to a bucket size roll and then velcro it to an adjustable curve support would be quite something.

@@rinkumultani6515 Well, the point is that it's not necessary to sit far away from a big screen. You sit far away from it because, I guess, you want the whole screen fit in, like, the central spot of your vision where the vision is the most clear. But it's not the only way to use a screen. You can put a big screen behind your wheelbase and let the screen extend to the sides of your vision, to peripheral vision. You will not be looking to the sides all the time. When driving, most of the time we look right in front of us and then only look to the far sides when it's needed: for example, to be able to see the exit of a tight corner or an opponent's car near you.

Your voice is mixed into the BGM making it harder again to pick out the words ( Try an EQ dip in the BGM around 1 khz and a presence boost at about 4khz on your voice plus less reverb and/or more predelay on the reverb again)

Curved is nice since it will give you a little bit of peripheral perspective but I don't think a jump of 5 inches is going to be noticeable at all after a day or two of using it and getting used to it. Even better for you would be to try and get two more cheap 27-in monitors so you can do a triple setup. And if it's worth anything I get decent motion sickness in a lot of VR games but car games typically don't give me any because the movement is only left and right there's very little up and down or rotation. Space simulators get me super nauseous but I've never had that issue in any of the car driving games

Yeah, went from a 24 inch 16:9 FHD to a 34 inch 21:9 UWQHD (3440×1440) curved screen and that difference was really noticeable. But that was 10 inches, triple the contrast and 30 extra dpi difference. On top of going from flat to curved. Now running three of those would be proper bonkers. So if you want to go single screen go for 34 inches or more. I have noticed slightly more peripheral vision, but also in combat flight sims better spotting, as I have more screen real estate to search through. So I use the Headtracking for the big head movements, and scan the rest with the eyes, which gives me a more stable image to search through. In racing 21:9 vs 16:9 is the difference between a practically useable mathematically coreect FOV and one that is not. Well the better monitor stand also helps with precious additional degrees. On the other hand the new OLED screens are being released in that format, currently I would wait for a year or two to see what teething issues they develop and then hit it.

VR (Oculus Rift S) is incredibly immersive, I can barely go BACK to monitors - highly recommend you borrow one at least!

@kitkatCSR, why not? I assume you aren't going to move it further away from you and use your old FOV, like what this video tests, right? If you put it on the same stand, you'll have a 18% bigger screen. Sit in your rig and try to imagine how more to the side you'll be able to see.

I have a 55 inch screen sitting literally just a few inches behind my wheel rim. I haven't seen anyone else set up one big single screen the way I have mine, the guys in my discord think it's bizarre but I swear it's really good. Besides it's the best I cam get right now 😅

That’s exactly what I use. Next level racing GT omega and their single screen monitor stand. I’m on console and it seems to work for me. Besides it’s all I got as I just move everything together when I race and move it apart when I’m not.
