Short Lowchen description:
Lowchen is small dog with short head and wide muzzle. Their height should be between 11-14 inch which is 28-36 cm and they should weigh between 10-18 pounds, which is 4,5 - 8 kgs.
Lowchens were bred to be companions and that is why they love to live indoors with their family around them. They are lively, sweet, affectionate and friendly dogs and they truly thrive for our attention. And since they are pretty playful, they make good companions for older children as well.

As a long term fancier/breeder-Almost 40 years in Löwchen, you have done a nice job telling people what a Löwchen is. Thank you!!! I would like to add a few things, I hope you do not mind. They are a non-shedding and non-allergenic breed. I do want people to know while they do bark, they do not bark unless there is a reason. Also, they have a pleasing expression. A hall mark of the breed is their Round Eyes, which are an important trait of the breed. They love people, especially children and also love other dogs. I second everything you've said. Mine only lets out a single bark if extremely excited about something. He LOVES to meet people and other dogs. Even non-dog people have been won over by his personality and good behavior. He's very agile and athletic and can outrun most breeds when chased at the dog park. I am a cat person, but this dog has really made me a huge fan of this breed. It's a shame they're not better known.

All dogs shed and there is no such thing as a non-allergenic breed.

@@michaeljensen6805 Well you are mis-informed. I have placed more Lowchen with people with serious allergies and they have no reaction. I do not have dog hair in my house, would you like to explain all of this? Vets do recommend this breed as non-allergenic and bon-shedding. Do you know more than them and a breeder of the breed involved with this breed for 40 years?

​@@GoodmanRealty I see a lot of arguments based on authority and not a lot based on facts. I don't recognize you as a authority on the matter. A simple google scholar search reveals how incredible wrong you are. Hair is not at all an indicator of whether or not you are allergic, because it has nothing to do with the hair, but the proteins that a dog produce. Hair can irretate some people, but that is not the same as a allergic reaction. The proteins that dogs produce are in all cells of its body, which means that it is also in dog saliva, skin etc. This is why it doesn't matter if your dog shed. This is the reason why you can't promote one dog breed as more "hypoallergenic" than another, because it has to do with the proteins that a dog produce and NOT the breed itself, which means that a person can be more allergic to the proteins that a Poodle or Löwchen produce than the protein of a husky dog. What you and many others are peddling is exactly what you highlighted in your own "response" which is "I have placed more Lowchen with people with serious allergies and they have no reaction" Anecdotal evidence with no serious academic scrutiny behind it. So please do explain, how you are right, when multiple scientists and multiple studies has tested your hypothesis and found that it does not corresspond with reality?

Love this video! I have two amazing Lowchen! They only bark to warn me of changes around me and If I don't come thank them or tell them it's nothing they keep barking. So shame on me if I don't do my part of the job. We live in the forest and they are NOT high maintenance unless the cottonwood pods are out and stick in their feet, or snow which sticks in little balls on their feet. A good brushing two times a week is more than enough. They do like their baths so that happens once a month unless we get dirty on a rainy walk. They are amazing dogs, and they fly under the seat in the plane perfectly! My husband isn't fond of animals however Cindy Lou Who has captured his heart. Hazel is with us for every job we do, laying wood floors, building a shop, changing a battery, setting up the barbecue, you name it and she will watch every step as if she wants to help or at least tell us what we are doing wrong. What in a Lowchen is not to love????

Thank you for a great comment with some extra additional info! The barking, that is why they can be great watchdogs, they are barking when someting "weird" is going on and they will always alert you. But its funny that you must go "thank" them 😃

They are the best dogs EVER. They are so smart. Owners must also be smart. They love golf balls A LOT. They love knowing they are smarter than ever other dog. They love to smile. They are like Mexican Federalies. Bribes are required. Lowchen must always know you have a treat ready to pay up at all times. You cannot trick your Lowchen. They are clever. Love this breed. My Lowchen is now 12 and I hope and need her to make it at least 5 more years. They love chicken, salmon, avacado, peaches, oranges, when peeled. Also a real raw garlic clove chopped and put in their food will help sooo much. They like it in eggs. They do bite. LOL

My Lowchen Maggie Mae lived until 12yrs old She was a fantastic dog and I miss her terribly True to all the characteristics you mention here I would love another at this point but so hard to find

Yay for the correct pronunciation! :D My Löwchen only does a sort of quiet short bark if there's abnormal human activity outside our apartment block at night. So it's really rare and I know to get up and inspect what's going on if she does that. But she's the only little lion dog I've ever had - she came to us as a 7 year old rescue from an illegal and filthy puppy farm - so I don't know if she's typical for her breed or not.

Oh i didnt know that! I know only a little bit of German and i know that der Löwe means lion, but i was not familiar with the Löwchen meaning cute lion.

Löwchen are taller, heavier, have longer legs and longer snout, without an underbite.

@@OpiceSF Lowchen have a bit more gaminess than Shih Tzu. The outline is a bit more square, their coats are different, different texture and silkiness. They have different energy levels and attitudes about things. Lowchen are definite tomboys compared to Shih Tzu. Both breeds are ;lovely in their own ways!
