When Shohei came over, he had the leg kick. But after he changed to the tip toe, he became one of the best hitters in the game. His balance by tip toeing erased the timing of the pitchers. The Yankees pitcher Cortes tried to mess with Ohtani by doing his patented chicken legs just to mess with his timing. And both of them had a good laugh.

Cultural difference here. In Japan, striking out is disgraceful; they emphasize contact. In the US you can strike out 200 times but if you mash 40 you get paid. So guys kick their legs up and try to destroy baseballs. Ohtani's toe never leaves the ground because he's contact first. The power's already there. Comes with being 6'4, 210.
@joninosaka3 ай бұрын
Except that Japanese players (like Ichiro) usually kick their legs even higher than MLB players and usually end up with all their body weight on their front leg in order to have a "leg up" (pun intended) when running to first base.

Ohtani came to mlb with leg kicks. Check his first season spring training for video proof. He worked with Angel batting staff and they said he is powerful enough to hit for power without leg kick so he changed to the current tippy toe batting stance.

Why is Shohei Ohtani able to achieve great records so easily, and to built big moments? "Shohei's top priority is to realize the team championship. He does not consider the achievement of his individual result as his primary goal". Shohei believes that the team's championship is more important than his own record and that the ultimate goal of playing baseball is for the team to win. This is why Shohei is able to stay calm and not get nervous even in the face with the opportunity to achieve great records, and as a result, he is able to achieve an amazing record with ease. This may be similar to what the Japanese often refer to as “the triumph of selflessness (MUYOKU no SHORI)” or “maintaining a normal usual mind anytime (HEIJYO SHIN)”. When we human being has a strong desire to accomplish something, our body tenses up and we cannot move as well as usual. You may feel, “I can usually do this, but only at important times when I really need to do it, for some reason my body tenses up and doesn't work as well as usual.” This is because the cognitive mechanism of the brain that controls our thoughts and awareness is also linked to the autonomic nervous system, which controls important functions in the body such as blood flow, hormones, and the respiratory system etc, which we are usually unconsciously and automatically working without realizing it. However, if we continue to be consciously keeping "HEIJYO SHIN", a normal usual mind anytime, the autonomic nervous system will function normally in the body as usual, and the body will move naturally without tension even in hard situations. This is a methodology that utilizes the basic physiological and structural mechanisms of the human body. Somewhere in the process of growing up, Otani must have naturally learned how to control his emotions with this kind of mentality. (Probably from his high school baseball experience.) This is probably why he is able to achieve such amazing records so easily even in an environment that attracts so much attention. Moreover, he did not achieve the record by suffering, but on the very day he achieved the great record, he easily accomplished a historic feat with unusual results such as six for six hits, three consecutive home runs, two stolen bases, and 10 runs batted in, all by himself, which he would not normally do. He is able to do this because he maintains his usual Shohei Ohtani mentality, thinking that “the record is only the halfway point to the ultimate goal, and the real goal is to win the championship, which lies ahead, and the most important time to get serious is not now." This is why his body moves freely and nimbly as usual as Sohei Ohtani, even in hard situations that would normally make him nervous. Everyone should learn this kind of self-control methodology from Ohtani's behavior.

Because Ohtani is HLP. He turns his barrel from behind in the corner. That creates a slingshot affect and he just then follows through. Barrel almost looks like it’s going to launch towards shortstop, but it doesn’t it just slings shots through the ball and then he just follows through.

Mike Lowell is basically correct in his breakdown. Unfortunately, he’s wrong when he says the "back elbow never goes down" and "elbow up, perfectly fine" (min. 5). And it’s definitely NOT fine for little leaguers 12 and under. It will not help them hit better. The result will be a lot of pop ups. When players are older and stronger, and can control the bat, it’s OK to incorporate “elbow up" in their swing, if it’s a comfortable set-up for them. There is zero reason to teach/preach “back elbow up” to little kids. The stability of your base/legs and hand path determine your hitting consistency. The back elbow absolutely, always comes down when the front heel goes down. With every hitter. It’s right there in this slo-mo video. Same thing when he shows video Ortiz and Thome. Power hitters like to put the back elbow up to “pre-load”. The elbow has to come down for the proper hand path, as the weight shifts (transfers) to the front leg.

@ I didn’t need to say “career homers”, because it is implied. No one thinks I meant 600 homers in one season. I’m glad you like numbers; so do I. Ohtani would need to average 41.67 home runs a season to for the next nine years to reach 600.

They were down by 11 in the 9th so they had a position player (2nd baseman in this case) come in to pitch so their pitchers could rest. He might’ve been able to pitch faster but not accurately if he tried. The hope is to just pitch for contact, induce some pop-ups for outs, or get them swinging at slow balls.
