It would be easier to gauge the differences if the tone and coil switching examples were back to back, rather than having to wind back and forth through the video. I thought that the stock pickup sounded better in the mid tone setting, but if it's only a matter of eq differences it's an expensive upgrade IMO. I have this bass and am just waiting for some TI's to arrive, I believe that LEL is using Chromes for these's demo's? The E string may be a little on the light side for a short scale bass.

I don’t know if I’d love the loss of the highs of the stock pickup for the low mid bump of the Serek. That bump sounds darn close to what you might get if you wired in a G&L OMG circuit on the stock pickup. I definitely prefer the stock’s single mode over the Serek’s single mode. I’m curious about the two in dense mixes and sparse mixes. That Serek low mid might be a perfect fit with lots of horns, strings, and synth. I think the Stock pickup might be the better choice in a power trio setting.
@LowEndLobster3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt! It's funny, the Serek pickup wasn't really 'designed' to be run in single coil (other demos are series/parallel). That's just how the stock push pull was wired on the Gibson, so I went with that to keep it apples to apples. This is basically the first/only single coil lazen-b90 test out there haha

I did not notice much difference between both pickups in series. But, the noise drop when playing the Serek in single coil was VERY noticeable. I could also hear the slight loss of highs w/ the Serek, due to the hum cancelling. But, I don’t play BASS to get highs. I play bass to move bowels, ;-D . So, I too would choose the Serek due to looks and the noiseless single coil option. I’m about to start looking on their website for specs to see if there is an option to get one or two w/ poles that will line up with Fender string spacing.

0:00 Love to shoot it out with the classic single coils from Aria...and it's going to be better. I predict the standard gibby fat wooly tones with some nice crispiness and extra articulation to them, remaining hot with an undercurrent of sizzle that doesn't quite crack the pop barrier. I would also love to hear it with flats and tapes...like a tube amp gives you particular sorts of headroom, I've been doing a tapes study and finding that flats and tapes even more so give you boosts in different areas - tapes are equivalent to using smaller diameter strings so even though the tapes dampen and flatten the sound out a bit, you get some nice brightness from the lighter gauge cores as well as a huge variety in choices in tension and lengths, if you don't mind giving up COLOR choices lol I have a LOT of material experiments to do...colored tapes, anodized metals with peening/shot, I wonder if I could dip cores in polyamide and draw them out with a nice coating that that would do? I was literally in materials science before I got taken out of the game lol it's also literally on my linkedin which NOBODY should read because I'm what happens when a dedicated technician gets ejected from their kingdom and lives to give the suits holy fucking shit on occasion, because, I don't want LI to shadowmute me (lol it does happen) because I like the HR people and C-suite asshats to see an occasional blurb pop up on the LI public feed that kicks them directly in their conscience's nads, what those sociopaths have of one. Nads or conscience, you get to figure it out...well, anyhow. I only wrote all that because LEL will go check my posts now and laugh his ass off at what he finds. :-) I'm legit modern day rebel. I live to outperform the norm and kick corporate bureaucrats in their eyerumps. :-) Now. On to this glorious pickup that a smart, driven enthusiast has made to scratch their own itch. That's straight up open source mentality lol *fix the problem*

2:45 it's going to sound amazing. I already know because I have listened to a BUNCH of Serek demos because the tone is *OUTSTANDING* - you killed it Jake. CRUSHED it. And anyone that's heard me rant about having your own electronics as being the key to your own guitar company (I use Tosin and Ola as a couple obvious examples of "I'm taking my ball and going home to make guitars"), well, I'm just not surprised that they sound great as well as loving what I know I'm gonna hear when LEL puts it in that specific platform. I'm a maple guy looking to experiment with walnut, but you can't go wrong with ash or hog (or analogues). I have no idea why I am so excited to hear this demo. I have been able to finally play more and I'm getting itchier than ever to jam (my hands and elbows are healing somewhat) and I have a bass I bought that was already hollowed out by the jerk that had it first to use as my test platform, at least to start with. Maple through neck maple. :-) /adhd

Thanks Ryan! I think they're $200/ea for this type of pickup. Pricey, but high quality and hand made.

That thing sounds fat either way but the Serek does give it some nice clarity
