My personal tip, if you ever use your oil fill pump for other fluids such as differential and transfercase oil, make sure you thoroughly clean it out before using it for ATF. If you do all your servicing yourself regularly consider getting a second pump just for ATF. Seems like a bit of a faf but they only cost like $10, and just avoids any possibility of contamination. Another thing is call you local dump/transfer station to see if you can drop off the used ATF oil, some only accept engine oil. If you're in the country a lot of the time your local mechanic will gladly take it. Never ever pour it in the drain.

Great vid. If you have a front mount trans oil cooler, you can change the ATF oil by doing the following: 1. Put the car into neutral. 2. Take off one end of the oil cooler hose and put into an empty bucket/container of at least 5L. 3. Turn your car on and it will pump out the oil, approx 4L before it starts to spatter out. 4. Turn car off, refill with fresh oil & repeat 1-2 more times until fully flushed. My car has a filler hole in the engine bay so makes it super easy to replace the ATF fluid. This gets all the fluid from the torque converter and sump aswell.

I don't have my MU-X yet but I am sure it will work well. Your videos are worth more than just about anything else out there as far as instruction and useful information goes, so very much appreciated indeed. There are even experienced mechanics that don't know about your trick on how to get the correct AT fluid level. Neat, that will take away the guess work next time I do my vehicles. You’re making the transmission fluid change more time consuming for yourself & contaminating new fluid the way you’re doing it. What you did initially with the first drain & refill is correct, but then what you need to do is remove the at fluid outgoing hose where it connects to the radiator. But first grab an empty 3L milk container and measure to the 2L mark and draw a horizontal line on the container, place the container in a bucket or something so it won’t tip over & just incase an accident happens & you over fill it. Place the atf hose into the bucket. You can extend the length of the hose with clear plastic tubing if need be. Now start your car & cycle through a few gears & back to P. Quickly jump out and check the fluid level. When it’s about to reach the 2L mark, turn the car off. Pump 2L back onto the car or the same as what came out & repeat this process until the fluid starts coming out clean & bright red. The system holds 10L, so cycle 10-11L through. Deliberately overfill by 1-2L to make sure you definitely have enough fluid to drain out of the check level hole. And then follow whatever process you use to make sure your AFT is at the correct temp to remove the check level bolt. The have the ATF reach 50 deg you’d need to idle the car from cold in your garage for around 15 minutes in Park. Takes a while to get ATF temps up. Holden Trailblazer owners out there can access the exact ATF temperature reading in the settings on the dash cluster. The Prados have a brilliant procedure you can follow without a scan tool to make sure the ATF is at the exact correct temp. You start the car & bridge two different diagnostic ports up in the driver’s footwell with a metal paper clip (top row of pins is 4th from the left, bottom row is 5th from the left), then that puts the car into service mode with the dash cluster lighting up randomly & rapidly like a Xmas tree, then you cycle one gear per second from P down to 1, then back up to N, then N to D and back again 6-8 times until the red ATF light comes on. It’ll flicker then go out when the fluid temp is between 43 & 46 deg Celsius (or 45-49, can’t quite remember) which gives you a minute or two window to get the fluid level exactly right.

I know this is a year old now, but what about taking the return line of and draining that (while in gear for a few seconds) it would mean you don't dilute your new oil as much and probably means less bottles? Just curious.
@LowRangeNick Жыл бұрын
You can rig up hoses to the feed and return, suck fresh oil into the system and drain old oil out. It is a little more difficult to do and setup and if you stuff it up you could damage the transmission. As your transmission wears in over time and learns shift patterns according to oil condition. If you flush all of the fluid out for new fluid it can sometimes cause issues. This is a safer method to avoid any issues. It increases the oil condition but doesn't change it completely. 🙂
@shanepascoe1078 Жыл бұрын

Hello Nick, i have recently purchased an ISUZU D-MAX 2019 model. I spoke to the car dealer and they say that the only ATF that i should use is the (isuzu d-max rt66 atf wsi) which is imported from Indonesia or so...! I highly doubt the dealer statement, would you confirm that could use the castrol transmax dex iii multivehicle??? Thanks in advance

It would be a good idea to use the dealers genuine fluid but you can also use penrite multivehicle LV fluid.

I purchased a dmax with 170k on it. No idea of the service history... Do you guys thing I'm best getting the trans done at a specialist auto shop?

Hi Greg, it would be a good idea to change the transmission oil filter and flush the oil a few times if it hasn't ever been changed.

On google search. Toyota is 38-46°c to check. Why you said 50°C
@LowRangeNick Жыл бұрын
Between 40-50 degrees is the temperature you can check the level at.

350 FOR A FLUSH. How much is 3 or 4 bottles of the trans fluid you use ?
@LowRangeNick3 жыл бұрын
They are about $55 each 4l bottle.

@@LowRangeNick so 4 bottles for 220 and full flush for 300 to 350. I would be getting the flush
@LowRangeNick3 жыл бұрын
@@jamestanner9198 If you change the oil every 60k you will only require 2 bottles each service, so around $100. But yes if you can afford to pay for a proper flush that is the best option. Unless your vehicle has very dirty transmission oil or has never been changed in over 150k, in which case a flush can cause issues.

I was quoted $530 for a flush 😳

I would at least do 5k on the first change just to get some value from an expensive bottle of oil
