Very nostalgic, when I was a kid in the late 70's/early 80's I'd spend my pocket money on Matchbox kits and knock one out every week using my Dads 'borrowed' Stanley knife and Humbrol enamel paints and eventually I achieved a finish something like your example. I always had trouble free handing canopy frames ( It was years before I felt up to tackling an He 111) and my childlike fertile imagination actually invented canopy masks using sellotape, although I failed to take out a patent.🤨 I also remember dissolving sprue in liquid glue to use as a filler before I even knew you could buy the proper stuff. Thanks for this vid, it brought back many happy memories.

Thanks Anton ! You were a trendsetter 😀 I started in the late 90s as a youngster and eas much the same. Paint the parts with enamel and put them on the windowsill to dry. Too much glue and what on earth is filler !

i used PVA glue for a mask, doesn't react with styrene so do not leave mark, it is flexible and can be applied with brush into small corners, peel off when the paint dries, and on the edges for peeling paint

Good result considering the quality of the paints. If Airfix's aim is to encourage people into the hobby then supplying quality paint in the starter sets would be a useful investment. Also a small piece of sandpaper, perhaps a knife with those snap off blades and a 'hints and tips' card with the instructions? Or a discount card to buy some decent paint and glue?

Thanks Steve ! Even a nail file style sander would be fine. They served me for years ! This one came with a hints and tips sheet which was a nice addition. I think over primer the paints would be ok. But they aren't fantastic by any means.

Thanks Craig ! The best sprue goo comes from the same styrene as the kit, but it's not always economical to make up a new batch every time, I have a standard goo I use with 50% clear sprue and 50% grey takom and a drop of black laquer for visibility that I use on most of my builds. Clear styrene is the most pure so I try and add a bit of that if I can.

Really great result. Having seem Matt's BF109 build I think the big difference is that you applied a professional approach to the challenging limited materials and quality whereas (and I mean no disrespect) I think Matt was simulating a less experienced approach to the problem to see what the average customer at this level could achieve. The result is very good indeed with the clever workarounds really making a difference . I don't get why the included paints are so poor, Hornby should address this.

Hi James! This is exactly the way I made all my models as a child. Except for the fact that the only paint supplied to my kits was silver... You should have won the first place. 😉

I wonder how many people get put off the hobby by these starter sets - it’s extremely difficult to achieve anything decent looking with the combination of a mediocre tooled kit, imprecise glue, and very poor paints. As a kid, building Airfix/Matchbox/etc in the 70s.... I got my parents to save used matchsticks for applying glue. Also would blag an occasional stanley knife blade from my dad - And my paints back then were all enamels, with much better coverage on un-primed plastic. Otherwise, this video is pretty much what modelling was for me in those days.

Hiya James.. *LOL* at the conversation between you and Matt* I recall watching his Starter Set Challenge a while ago. Technically you don't need the toothpicks either as Airfix' own videos say so cut a corner off the box and use a triangle of that to apply glue and a square bit as a glue palette, but anyway.. s'a small thing :) Nice idea to use the sprue and kit glue as sprue goo! That's something Airfix don't mention, but then they're not going to mention faults with their own kit such as gaps. IIRC Matt painted opposite direction on alternate layers to minimise brush strokes. I was going to ask why you didn't paint the wheel bays prior to assembling the wings, but the wheels are up obscuring the bays anyway :)

It would be entirely fair to add some windscreen washer fluid to the paint. That would aid with the thinning and break down the surface tension. I think most of us have access to it. The beading up of the paint appears to be more due to not washing the parts before hand. That's roughly the way they behave with residual release agent still on the plastic... though to bead that much that would be a heck of a lot of mold release remaining >.>' If it was purely a surface tension issue, the second coat wouldn't have gone on as nicely, I'd imagine.
@lpjmodels
@lpjmodels 2 жыл бұрын
I dont think manufacturers use the release agents of yore, and I have never had a greasy kit, I think mould release is more in the plastic that's used these days. ( see here www.crodasmartmaterials.com/en-gb/effects/mould-release-additives ) I guarantee if it was an enamel it wouldn't have done it. It's in the chemistry of the acrylic applied to a smooth surface, once there is a tooth in the primer or base layer the grip helps the carrier to disperse properly without beading. Notice the application was a lot smoother over the sanded surface too. ( but with that argument you could say I sanded away the mould release if present)

I don't think that Airfix are doing themselves any favours with these starter sets. The paints are abysmal and the moulding on some of the sets made from ancient moulds is simply terrible. There is a danger of disillusioning young modellers trying the hobby for the first time and discouraging them for life. I have set myself a different challenge of trying to build a couple of the starter kits with no holds barred to see what can be achieved with unrestricted tools and materials. I have chosen two road cars, as that is where my interest mainly lies. I appreciate the notion of the challenge, but am not prepared to invest my time and funds in a build with which I would never be satisfied, and it would be a waste of of kit - however poor it may be - if the model finished up in the bin or being used for airgun practice, which was the fate of some of my Airfix models from my youth many years' ago.
