LQ4 6.0 Conversion in my 95 Chevy Tahoe

Walkaround and startup after completing the conversion of a Gen III LQ4 6.0 into my 95 Chevy Tahoe. Some great info within for anyone looking to do this conversion.

Nice work and looks good. I just put an lq4 with the 4 L 80 transmission into my 99 Yukon Denali still in the process of getting everything together and running. I have a 6 inch lift with a 3 inch body lift on 37 inch tires. Will be switching the front and rear diff to 4:10 gears soon just working on all the wiring and pinouts right now. Will be upgrading the cam and cylinder heads and dropping an electric fan to

Man I want to do the same thing. I got a newer tahoe now but I want a 2 dr tahoe totally redone with a 6.0 in it. I'm saving about 20 grand now to make it exactly how I want it.

The factory mounts will work, but you need the brackets that bolt to the block. I got mine from Dirty Dingo. Spend the extra cash for the slotted style thats adjustable. The hardest part was all the research and learning I had to do beforehand. It took a month to gather everything I needed but once I had it all, everything just bolted right in.

Yes I reused the stock R4 compressor. I didn't even have to disconnect the lines. I went with the Dirty Dingo brackets.

bottom driver side seat cover comes off with 2 13mm bolts under base and wedges put if you get better on at junkyard

about 125K on the body, frame and front differential housing at the moment. The rest of the drivetrain has been completely redone and the 6.0 had 105K on it when I bought it. As someone who has built and swapped many SBC's, I would highly recommend you consider the LSX. It will go in place of anything that can run the SBC and will net you more power, better economy and is more worry free. Not to mention the value of the vehicle will go up should you try to resell.

Nice swap i have been looking into dropping in a LS2 in my 99 Tahoe 2 Door Sport its auto and 4WD not push button 4WD wasn't sure if i had to get a custom drive shaft made or if the rear end would hold up but i could just use a 01 or newer rear end guess ill just keep looking around and try to find all my parts to order and do the swap ..if i can do it under 2k i would be shocked i have a extra ls2 from a 05 GTO i bought for my 06 GTO to build but its got enough power now on its original motor and been getting hit up for the 05 motor so its getting put in the Tahoe any ways i like your ecu set up think ill use your build to get started i think i haft to get a cable tb as it is fly by wire and have extra Kooks for exhaust ..

nice tuck, i have a 95 k2500 silverado 5.7 nv4500 and looking to do the same 6.o swap. any problems with pilot bearing issues or anything else to look out for. tbi motor sucks its slow under powered and doesnt like to rev high witch makes it suck getting on the interstate. not worth building up the tbi for the cost of a ls motor. any recomendations on wiring?

and how many miles is on your tahoe? i remeber watching your compilation video when i first got my 95 tahoe 4 years back. now i have a 99 4runner limited and will be putting a 350 small block with headers and a bullydog chip in it along with my old tahoes transmission with the shift kit in it, then having true dual flowmaster super 40s dove tailing and tucked out the back.

Actually, the more I think of it, I believe it was a cheap white face kit and then I bought the overlay with chrome rings and added it over the white face kit. Nu Image rings a bell. The overlay may be made by them.

I never disconnected it. Never touched the original ECM either. Figured as long as the VSS was getting power, it would continue to work the speedo.

so i'm getting ready to do the same swap into my 99 Tahoe. were you able to connect to all your stock gauges? if not, what gauges are you using. and are you running the ecm from the LQ4? also did you pin the harness into your stock fuse box? or did you have to use the one from the 6.0 vehicle?

i was reading along your build thread trying to find something out about the transmission. I have an 89 gmc k1500 just bought a whole 2000 chevy wrecked for $500. It has a good 4.8 in it as well as a good transmission. The transmission will have to go in my 99 chevy seems how its an automatic. I would like to put the 4.8 in my 89, but im having problems finding out how to mate it up to my 5ML60 other wise known as an early NV3500. Any advice besides get a newer 5speed.

No reason that 5lm60 wont mate to the 4.8. All the bellhousings are the same on the newer engines. Just read though my thread about the specific pilot bushing you will need. It will all bolt right up

Thanks for the video! LS into older trucks is becoming a must do mod. I'm considering an LS into my Volvo 240 once I get the suspension set up right. On a side note, does anyone know why the footage looks "floaty" and distorted at times? Is this a mix of smartphone stabilization and KZbins compression? Just wondering, I've seen it on tons of videos lately.

KZbin gives the option to stabilize the video if it was jumpy. The jello effect is a result of youtubes rendering. Its quite an improvement over what I initially uploaded

ill be sure to remeber that but for the resell thats not guna happen. the 4runner was the last thing my grandfather bought for me. (he raised me since i was 3 years old and im 20 now) and as of now the entire vehicle has 210k miles on it.

What about the ls wiring harness it didn't have a vss plug? I know you had nothing but the essentials.

Nope, the VSS has nothing to do with the engine management so it wasn't part of the harness. The VSS takes the signal off the T-case and is powered by the original ECM. I just left it all connected.

thanks, but I decided to buy an 04 z71 truck and swap the 5.3 for my 6.0. much easier project. even though I'm fully qualified, just not that much time. if anyone else is looking to do this swap. I have new conversion motor mount plates I'll sell.

I blew piston #7 clear off the rod while towing my bike during a summer vacation. Had to get the beast towed 170 miles home. I believe it was due to a lean mix under WOT that finally led to the demise. I was never able to get the TBI tuned to what I built. I spent thousands and rebuilt the 383 twice because of bad tunes and incorrect components despite all the recommendations from a TBI tuner. If I just went LSX years ago I would have been far better off.

+Roman Minkin If you watched the video you would know I mated an NV4500 Manual trans to this. Also there is a 14 bolt out back. The original 4l60e and 10 bolts both blew more than once long before the stock engine was removed.
