Many thanks for that Jim, you're always very generous in your comments. I just never had the head for killing, it needs to have a purpose for me to do it. I'm perfectly ok with population control, food, disease, removing vermin, making a film... and many other constellations. But killing just because the opportunity presents itself is not for me. Shooting that second stag would have added nothing to the story, I am not a trophy guy (outside memories) and there's bound to be another hunter in the area that will have a great experience hunting that beast.

@@THLR When shaping a shotgun style fit on a new rifle stock, I start with a horse hoof rasp, then graduate down to lessor round files, then used coarse sandpaper belts off my belt sander that I "shoe shine" the comb to dimension with. I shoot it at a pattern board type target numerous times to confirm grouping impact...this is done using an international skeet unmounted or "lowgun" shotgun style ( quick mount ) . When fit is confirmed and only then will I wet the wood to get the "whiskers" to stand up for inline small grit sanding and final finish. I very much agree with your concept of achieving proper cast off, drop at comb and pitch on a rifle just like is done on "bespoken" custom shotguns.... What I want to learn, is how to add leather pistol grip, comb cheek-weld and forearm LEATHER inserts like on high dollar Blasers and now Gunwerks - Nexus model rifles.

Very refreshing, Thomas, to see such thought and control and leaving the second stag. I’m with you there and would have left that for another day or for someone else to have that experience. I don’t like to see killing for killing’s sake. Great shooting as per usual. You know your Blasers and how they shoot. It’s the same with Tikkas. I can pick one up and most shoot very similar. Interesting to see LR target type scopes on the guide’s rifles. Makes adjustments quicker but a penalty on weight and higher profile in the field?
@THLR2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. Yes unless it is needed for a cull, I simply don't shoot anymore. Allthough Ireland was a good experience, I was also a bit frustrated by the film quality of the animals, so I upgraded the a lens to capture the deer better. Hopefully I will be able to capture better images of the deer this season. I don't like the LR scopes for size or weight myself, would have loved to use a "normal" scopes, but optics are expensive and important so quite a few go for the reliability you get with a military model. Or at least that seems to be the reason when I ask, another common answer is "availability". Most of my scopes puch against the 1 kg limit with the mount, would really liked to have something approaching half of that but every optic seems to be pushing towards 700-800 grams now. I was perfectly happy with my fixed 8x56 for my stalking when I used that, so cannot see why a modern version of it (better crosshair) wouldn't do me the same service. For culling I used a 4-16x50, allthough good I often felt like I was pushing against the upper magnification and wanted a bit more to properly identify the animal I was watching. Now I use a 3-18x50 and finding that quite balanced for size/ weight compared to my larger 5-25x56.
@ReferenceFidelityComponents2 жыл бұрын
@@THLR I’m with you. As I get older I no longer want to kill animals unless for vermin control or to keep populations healthy or to protect farmers from crop damage. Recreational stalking has become a leisure sport in its own right and I’m against that. Must admit I have no room to talk about scopes. I moved from a 2.5-15x56 stalking scope to tactical models on all my rifles. The simplest and best I used was an older vx3 4.5-14x44 leupold with side parallax and low profile turrets. My rifles now use nightforce nsx 5-25, bushnell tactical elite and S&B pm2 5-25 scopes. The weight is unwelcome but for practise out to longer ranges and for vermin control they suit my older eyes!

Happy New Year Thomas! Congratulations on a successful hunt. Travel while you can. The new rifle brings a new challenge for follow up shots and an incentive for first shot hits. A couple of friends have Ruger No. 1's which would be slighty faster to load, but also heavier. Thanks for sharing.
@THLR2 жыл бұрын
I had a Ruger no 1 for a short time. For a time, reindeer hunting was restricted to single shot rifles so the No 1 had some popularity in Norway. It was ok, but the trigger fall time was noticable and it weighed the same as bolt rifle so with no "trade benefit" I let it go fairly quickly. I always wanted a Browning Low Wall 1885 in 243, but no such rifle was ever imported to Norway and I have never seen one live. There's been a few High Wall in circulation, but those have the same weight issues as the No1. I'd say a falling block makes for a better reloading procedure than the kipplauf, especially when you shoot as much prone as I do.

Hey Thomas, another excellent video. Love seeing the country you get to hunt. Please continue to stress the need of basic marksmanship. That seems to fall to the side of rifles, cartridges, bullets etc. BTB, where did you hold on that animal? Nice shot!
@THLR2 жыл бұрын
The bullet took all three animals where I aimed; allthough on the fox I was aiming for the nose as the chest was hidden by grass/heather. The sika had obstructions in front of the vitals (camera is higher than me) and with the fallow I just wanted it down on the spot as it was only a few minutes of daylight left. I'm not really familiar enough with Sam the Lab to say much about his tracking ability allthough I suspect he would have found a lungshot deer just fine. So that's some insight into my decision process. If I'm unable to achieve natural point of aim and settle the reticle wobble on the area I want the bullet, I simply don't pull the trigger.
@samurai41a492 жыл бұрын
Fantastically shot episode as usual! A quick question...It seems you usually go for a neck or high shoulder shot on deer sized game. Do you have a preference between the 2 or is there something that dictates when you take one over the other? Thanks for your time and great content!
@THLR2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim. It really depends how and where the animal is standing as well as how stable my position is. I don't want to ruin the most valuable meat, I don't want to burst the diaphrame and pollute the carcass with rumen. If I don't have a dog at hand I don't want the deer to run either, so that kind of narrows the vital area. On a broadside shot I'd go up on the front side of the leg (not backside) to hit bone and not burst the stomach. Everything else is basically due not having that option.

Hoi Thomas waidmannsheil. Do you have any experience about lead free bullets? What is your opinion ? Your camouflage jacket is this from Blaser? Do you have alot of freedom of movement with it?
@THLR2 жыл бұрын
Waidmannsdank! Yes, I have started the transition to copper bullets. Barnes TTSX was very precise and knocked the small deer over just as the lead. I went with Barnes simply because they are very precise and my professional hunter friends use them and report they work (they shoot thousands). I will try the Lapua Naturalis next as this is something Lapua would like me to do. Copper bullets are quite expensive, so it's not something I want to experiment or fuzz around with. I just need something that works. My jacket is the Blaser Venture 3L (sponsored item) waterproof jacket, it is actually quite good (see in later videos...), freedom of movement is as should be plus arms/wrist/neck cover is very good. Many manufacturers fail to protect the wrist when reaching and either fail to protect or ventilate the neckline (meaning neck is covered but diameter is too narrow). I prefer my neck to be covered up to the jawline and just under the ear, if you don't have that you end up using the hood more than you should. For a hunter, the hood shuts you out from the world. The lightweight fabric is stronger than expected (better than comparable lightweight models I've tried) and it is quiet enough. From looking at the specs I suspect they have invested more in the Venture than other garments??? Weakest points to me is waist and hood. The hood cannot handle really strong wind and I don't like is their dwarf sizes. I'm up one size from my regular fit and it is still a little off around the hips (It grows wider faster than taller...). I only use the waterproof layers as baselayers is done better by Aclima/Devold and wind layers from Arcteryx/Norrøna has a much better fit for my body. But all in all a very good first attempt at the high end stuff, the user comfort is right up there with my best waterproof clothing. The other product lines are very continental and not of any interest to me, so I don't know anything about them.

Great stalk,great rifle, great hunter @thlr which kahles scope is it ?

It's the Helia 3,5-18x50. Not the most elegant scope for a kipplauf, but I wanted 50mm objective as I'm not willing to limit myself to daylight only. I find that with a 42mm the light vanishes same tempo as with the naked eye.

Kipplauf Is generally a very challenging rifle to make shoot very well.

@@stefanomalinverni9431 as the stock isn't adjustable, I'll do a recoil analysis via the Triggercam and bring a rough file to the range and we'll see if the recoil impulse can be improved. The professionals watching will have to take a sedative before watching those episodes, I understand recoil ok but I'm definitively not a woodworker...

There Is also some issues in reloading cases with K95 with very fast calibers related to the move of material from to neck. This can affect the bullet aligment and the kipplauf "action" closure. Which caliber did you choose?
